Newly prepared tetracyclic imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives were synthesized to study their antiproliferative activity against human cancer cells. Additionally, the structure-activity was studied to confirm the impact of the N atom position in pyridine nuclei as well as the chosen amino side chains on antiproliferative activity. Targeted amino substituted regioisomers were prepared by using uncatalyzed amination from corresponding chloro substituted precursors.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) occupy a prominent position in the field of materials chemistry due to their attractive optoelectronic properties. While extensive work has been done on the crystalline materials over the past decades, the newly reported glasses formed from HOIPs open up a new avenue for perovskite research with their unique structures and functionalities. Melt-quenching is the predominant route to glass formation; however, the absence of a stable liquid state prior to thermal decomposition precludes this method for most HOIPs.

Membrane fusion is closely related to plasma membrane domains rich in cone-shaped phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) lipids that can reverse membrane curvature under certain conditions. The phase transition of PE-based lipid membranes from the lamellar fluid phase (L) to the inverse hexagonal phase (H) is commonly taken as a general model in reconstructing the membrane fusion pathway, and whose structural features have been mostly described so far using structural and microscopic techniques. The synthesis of a homochiral building block based on L-tartrate-chromium(III) complex anions is reported. The dinuclear complex anion, which contains two bridging L-tartrate ligands and one aromatic N-donor ligand coordinated to chromium(III) ions, exhibits a boat conformation in which intramolecular resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding is present. The sodium L-tartrate-chromium(III) compound with the formula Na[Cr(bpy)(L-tart)H]·9HO (1) crystallizes from a methanol-water solution as a high water content material in the monoclinic space group 2.

Centromeres are scaffolds for the assembly of kinetochores that ensure chromosome segregation during cell division. How vertebrate centromeres obtain a three-dimensional structure to accomplish their primary function is unclear. Using super-resolution imaging, capture-C, and polymer modeling, we show that vertebrate centromeres are partitioned by condensins into two subdomains during mitosis.

A model of the Frumkin isotherm following adsorption on the surface of the rotating disk is developed with the purpose to calculate the time that is needed for the establishment of the near equilibrium state between the amount of adsorbate and the bulk concentration of surfactant. The "near" is quantified as 99% of the proper equilibrium surface coverage. The near equilibration time depends on the bulk concentration and on the coefficient of molecular attraction in the adsorbed layer.

In response to increasing concern about the impact of plastic degradation on the environment, this study investigates the degradation of virgin and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) under γ-irradiation in aqueous solutions, with particular focus on the resulting formation of microplastic particles (MP). By exposing both virgin and recycled PET samples to different doses of γ-irradiation (10, 50, and 100 kGy), a comprehensive analysis using UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and micro-Raman spectroscopy is presented. The results, highlighted by micro-Raman spectroscopy, show that γ-irradiation produces micrometer-sized plastic particles, with the recycled PET having a significantly higher MP content than its original counterpart.

Background: Mosquitoes pose a risk to human health worldwide, and correct species identification and detection of cryptic species are the most important keys for surveillance and control of mosquito vectors. In addition to traditional identification based on morphology, DNA barcoding has recently been widely used as a complementary tool for reliable identification of mosquito species. The main objective of this study was to create a reference DNA barcode library for the Croatian mosquito fauna, which should contribute to more accurate and faster identification of species, including cryptic species, and recognition of relevant vector species.

Distinctive Nucleic Acid Recognition by Lysine-Embedded Phenanthridine Peptides.

Three new phenanthridine peptide derivatives (, , and ) were synthesized to explore their potential as spectrophotometric probes for DNA and RNA. UV/Vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectra, mass spectroscopy, and computational analysis confirmed the presence of intramolecular interactions in all three compounds. Computational analysis revealed that compounds alternate between bent and open conformations, highlighting the latter's crucial influence on successful polynucleotide recognition.

This study aimed to synthesize molybdenum complexes coordinated with an aroyl hydrazone-type ligand (HL), which was generated through the condensation of 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde with benzhydrazide. The synthesis yielded two types of mononuclear complexes, specifically [MoO(L)(MeOH)] and [MoO(L)(HO)], as well as a bipyridine-bridged dinuclear complex, [(MoO(L))(4,4'-bpy)]. Those entities were thoroughly characterized using a suite of analytical techniques, including attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (IR-ATR), elemental analysis (EA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD).

A Pilot Immunohistochemical Study Identifies Hedgehog Pathway Expression in Sinonasal Adenocarcinoma.

However, almost nothing is known about its role in the sinonasal adenocarcinoma, either in intestinal or non-intestinal subtypes. In this work, we have analyzed immunohistochemical staining of six Hedgehog pathway proteins, sonic Hedgehog (SHH), Indian Hedgehog (IHH), Patched1 (PTCH1), Gli family zinc finger 1 (GLI1), Gli family zinc finger 2 (GLI2), and Gli family zinc finger 3 (GLI3), on 21 samples of sinonasal adenocarcinoma and compared them with six colon adenocarcinoma and three salivary gland tumors, as well as with matching healthy tissue, where available.

This work presents the design, synthesis and biological activity of novel -substituted benzimidazole carboxamides bearing either a variable number of methoxy and/or hydroxy groups. The targeted carboxamides were designed to investigate the influence of the number of methoxy and/or hydroxy groups, the type of substituent placed on the N atom of the benzimidazole core and the type of substituent placed on the benzimidazole core on biological activity. The most promising derivatives with pronounced antiproliferative activity proved to be -methyl-substituted derivatives with hydroxyl and methoxy groups at the phenyl ring and cyano groups on the benzimidazole nuclei with selective activity against the MCF-7 cell line (IC = 3.

Oxidative stress often affects the structure and metabolism of lipids, which in the case of polyunsaturated free fatty acids (PUFAs) leads to a self-catalysed chain reaction of lipid peroxidation (LPO). The LPO of PUFAs leads to the formation of various aldehydes, such as malondialdehyde, 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), 4-hydroxyhexenal, and 4-oxo-2-nonenal. Among the reactive aldehydes, 4-HNE is the major bioactive product of LPO, which has a high affinity for binding to proteins.

Although cancer and malaria are not etiologically nor pathophysiologically connected, due to their similarities successful repurposing of antimalarial drugs for cancer and vice-versa is known and used in clinical settings and drug research and discovery. With the growing resistance of cancer cells and Plasmodium to the known drugs, there is an urgent need to discover new chemotypes and enrich anticancer and antimalarial drug portfolios. In this paper, we present the design and synthesis of harmiprims, hybrids composed of harmine, an alkaloid of the β-carboline type bearing anticancer and antiplasmodial activities, and primaquine, 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial drug with low antiproliferative activity, covalently bound via triazole or urea.

The structural features and optical properties of supramolecular cyanoiron salts containing bis-pyridinium-4-oxime Toxogonin (TOXO) as an electron acceptor are presented. The properties of the new TOXO-based cyanoiron materials were probed by employing two cyanoiron platforms: hexacyanoferrate(II), [Fe(CN)] (HCF); and nitroprusside, [Fe(CN)(NO)] (NP). Two water-insoluble inter-ionic donor-acceptor phases were characterized: the as-prepared microcrystalline reddish-brown (TOXO)[Fe(CN)]·8HO () with a medium-responsive, hydrochromic character; and the dark violet crystalline (TOXO)[Fe(CN)]·3.

Oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation play important roles in numerous physiological and pathological processes, while the bioactive products of lipid peroxidation, lipid hydroperoxides and reactive aldehydes, act as important mediators of redox signaling in normal and malignant cells. Many types of cancer, including osteosarcoma, express altered redox signaling pathways. Such redox signaling pathways protect cancer cells from the cytotoxic effects of oxidative stress, thus supporting malignant transformation, and eventually from cytotoxic anticancer therapies associated with oxidative stress.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the most common histological form of head and neck tumors (HNTs), which originate from the epithelium of the lips and oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, nasal cavity, and sinuses. The main risk factors include consumption of tobacco in all forms and alcohol, as well as infections with high-risk human papillomaviruses or the Epstein-Barr virus. Regardless of the etiological agent, the risk of developing different types of HNTs is from two to more than six times higher in males than in females.

One Incremental Stride for Doxycycline, One Substantial Advancement for Thyroid Eye Disease.

The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a 12-week doxycycline treatment for thyroid eye disease (TED), an autoimmune condition associated with thyroid dysfunction. In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 82 patients were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio to receive doxycycline (50 mg) or to undergo no treatment. Various metrics, including margin reflex distance (MRD1 and MRD2), eyelid aperture, levator muscle function, lagophthalmos, proptosis, ocular motility, diplopia, and Graves' ophthalmopathy-specific quality-of-life (GO-QOL) scale scoring were assessed.
