The current therapies against gastric pathogen are ineffective in over 20% of patients. Enzymes belonging to the purine salvage pathway are considered as novel drug targets in this pathogen. Therefore, the main aim of the current study was to determine the antibacterial activity of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), an active form of vitamin B6, against reference and clinical strains of .

To address the challenge of finding new combination therapies against castration-sensitive prostate cancer, we introduce Vini, a computational tool that predicts the efficacy of drug combinations at the intracellular level by integrating data from the KEGG, DrugBank, Pubchem, Protein Data Bank, Uniprot, NCI-60 and COSMIC databases. Vini is a computational tool that predicts the efficacy of drugs and their combinations at the intracellular level. It addresses the problem comprehensively by considering all known target genes, proteins and small molecules and their mutual interactions involved in the onset and development of cancer.

The rise of the populations of antibiotic resistant bacteria represents an increasing threat to human health. In addition to the synthesis of new antibiotics, which is an extremely expensive and time-consuming process, one of the ways to combat bacterial infections is the use of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as the vehicles for targeted delivery of therapeutic drugs. Since such a strategy requires the investigation of the effect of Au NPs (with and without drugs) on both bacterial and human cells, we investigated how the presence of coating-free Au NPs affects the physicochemical properties of lipid membranes that model prokaryotic (PRO) and eukaryotic (EU) cells.

The dimer of the tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) radical anions represents the simplest and the best studied case of two-electron multicenter covalent bonding (2e/mc or ). The model compound, -methylpyridinium salt of TCNE, is diamagnetic, meaning that the electrons in two contiguous radicals are paired and occupy a HOMO orbital which spans two TCNE radicals. Charge density in this system is studied as a benchmark for comparison of charge densities in other pancake-bonded radical systems.

Peroxiporins are a specialized subset of aquaporins, which are integral membrane proteins primarily known for facilitating water transport across cell membranes. In addition to the classical water transport function, peroxiporins have the unique capability to transport hydrogen peroxide (HO), a reactive oxygen species involved in various cellular signaling pathways and regulation of oxidative stress responses. The regulation of HO levels is crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis, and peroxiporins play a significant role in this process by modulating its intracellular and extracellular concentrations.

Eukaryotic NMEs/NDP kinases are a family of 10 multifunctional proteins that occur in different cellular compartments and interact with various cellular components (proteins, membranes, and DNA). In contrast to the well-studied Group I NMEs (NME1-4), little is known about the more divergent Group II NMEs (NME5-9). Three recent publications now shed new light on NME6.

The interactions of electrons with molecular systems under various conditions are essential to interdisciplinary research fields extending over the fundamental and applied sciences. In particular, investigating electron-induced ionization and dissociation of molecules may shed light on the radiation damage to living cells, the physicochemical processes in interstellar environments, and reaction mechanisms occurring in combustion or plasma. We have, therefore, studied electron-induced ionization and dissociation of the gas phase 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (DHP), a cyclic ether appearing to be a viable moiety for developing efficient clinical pharmacokinetics and revealing the mechanisms of biofuel combustion.

The atmospheric partitioning of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in aerosol is a complex function of the size of suspended water droplets and their pH value. The unraveling of the affinity of TFA towards basic but not acidic conditions may be accomplished by providing an insight into the hydration pattern of undissociated TFA. Owing to rather scarce details on very dilute aqueous solutions of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), we examined CFCOOD and CFCOONa solutions in DO in the concentration range 0.

Organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) facilitate the cellular uptake of a large number of compounds. Zebrafish Oatp1d1 matches the functional capabilities of human OATP orthologs, particularly in hormone and drug transport. It is highly expressed in the liver and later stages of embryonic development, indicating its critical role in zebrafish physiology and development.

The requirement for fast and dependable protein purification methods is constant, either for functional studies of natural proteins or for the production of biotechnological protein products. The original procedure has to be formulated for each individual protein, and this demanding task was significantly simplified by the introduction of affinity tags. adenylosuccinate synthetase (AdSS) is present in solution in a dynamic equilibrium of monomers and biologically active homodimers.

Purpose: An investigation for the co-occurrence of two unrelated genetic disorders of muscular dystrophy and Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) (OMIM#176270) using joint whole genome sequencing (WGS).
Methods: Trio WGS joint analysis was performed to investigate the genetic etiology in a proband with PWS, prolonged muscular hypotonia associated hyperCKemia, and early-onset obesity. The parents were unaffected.

The bacterium is known to efficiently and accurately reassemble its genome after hundreds of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Only at very large amounts of radiation-induced DSBs is this accuracy affected in the wild-type , causing rearrangements in its genome structure. However, changes in its genome structure may also be possible during the propagation and storage of cell cultures.

The total synthesis of two new marine natural products, (±)-marinoaziridine B and (±)--methyl marinoaziridine A , was accomplished. The (±)-marinoaziridine was prepared in a six-step linear sequence with a 2% overall yield. The key steps in our strategy were the preparation of the chiral epoxide (±)- using the Johnson Corey Chaykovsky reaction, followed by the ring-opening reaction and the Staudinger reaction.

Extracting meaningful information from atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of proteins remains a challenging task due to the high-dimensionality and complexity of the data. MD simulations yield trajectories that contain the positions of thousands of atoms in millions of steps. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of local dynamical events across the entire trajectory is often difficult.

In biomedical and biotechnological domains, liquid protein formulations are vital tools, offering versatility across various fields. However, maintaining protein stability in a liquid form presents challenges due to environmental factors, driving research to refine formulations for broader applications. In our recent study, we investigated the relationship between deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and the natural presence of osmolytes in specific combinations, showcasing the effectiveness of a bioinspired osmolyte-based DES in stabilizing a model protein.

Gynaecological cancers originate within the female reproductive system and are classified according to the site in the reproductive system where they arise. However, over 50 % of these malignancies are categorized as rare, encompassing 30 distinct histological subtypes, which complicates their diagnosis and treatment. The focus of this review is to give an overview of established in vitro models for the investigation of rare gynaecological cancers, as well as an overview of available online databases that contain detailed descriptions of cell line characteristics.

Iron plays vital roles in important biological processes in fish, but can be toxic in high concentrations. The information on metalloproteins that participate in maintenance of Fe homeostasis in an esocid fish, the northern pike, as an important freshwater bioindicator species, are rather scarce. The aim of this study was to identify main cytosolic constituents that sequester Fe in the northern pike liver.
