Background: Peer victimization is associated with a wide range of mental health problems in youth, yet few studies described its association with mental health comorbidities.

Methods: To test the association between peer victimization timing and intensity and mental health comorbidities, we used data from 1216 participants drawn from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, a population-based birth cohort. Peer victimization was self-reported at ages 6-17 years, and modeled as four trajectory groups: low, childhood-limited, moderate adolescence-emerging, and high-chronic.

Center for Immunology of Viral, Auto-immune, Hematological and Bacterial diseases (IMVA-HB/IDMIT), Université Paris-Saclay, Inserm, CEA, Fontenay-aux-Roses, France.

Achieving sufficient worldwide vaccination coverage against SARS-CoV-2 will require additional approaches to currently approved viral vector and mRNA vaccines. Subunit vaccines may have distinct advantages when immunizing vulnerable individuals, children and pregnant women. Here, we present a new generation of subunit vaccines targeting viral antigens to CD40-expressing antigen-presenting cells.

Analysis of Maternal Postnatal Depression, Socioeconomic Factors, and Offspring Internalizing Symptoms in a Longitudinal Cohort in South Africa.

JAMA Netw Open

August 2021

Department of Science and Innovation-National Research Foundation Centre of Excellence in Human Development, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Importance: Few studies from low-and-middle income countries have investigated long-term associations between maternal postnatal depression and offspring internalizing (ie, depressive and anxiety) symptoms, and none have investigated interactions in this association.

Objective: To investigate the association between maternal postnatal depression and offspring internalizing symptoms from adolescence to adulthood and the interaction with exposure to socioeconomic adversity and with the child's sex.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This secondary analysis used data from Birth to Twenty Plus (BT20+), a prospective birth cohort study of children born in Soweto, South Africa, and followed up until age 28 years.

Local malignant potential of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) can lead at advanced stages to the destruction of underlying tissues and significant morbidity. The primary risk factor for progression of advanced basal cell carcinoma (aBCC) is the long duration of the tumour, which results from delay in seeking medical care. To assess the implication of psycho-social factors in the delay before the first medical consultation among patients with aBCC, in order to identify potentially targetable factors enabling earlier diagnosis.

Choosing a first-line treatment to optimize long-term outcomes is a major challenge for treating patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The development of several new molecules makes it critical to identify the relevant factors to consider so as to provide an optimal risk-benefit ratio when initiating a treatment in naïve patients with neovascular AMD. This paper proposes a consensus established with the Delphi method (which includes a gradation in a consensus based on an analysis of the convergence rate of answers) to provide criteria that guide the ophthalmologist's decision for treatment initiation and follow-up in neovascular AMD patients.

Objective: To investigate the cost-effectiveness of implementing iStent inject trabecular bypass stent (TBS) in conjunction with cataract surgery (Cat Sx) in patients with mild-to-moderate glaucoma from a societal perspective in France. The secondary objective was to explore the economic impact of iStent inject TBS in patients who comply to different degrees with their anti-glaucoma medications.

Methods: A previously published Markov model was adapted to estimate the cost-effectiveness of treatment with iStent inject TBS + Cat Sx versus Cat Sx alone over a lifetime time horizon in patients with mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma in France.

Substance abuse is a significant public health concern that disproportionately burdens males and low-income communities. This study examined (1) longitudinal profiles of male adolescent poly-substance use and (2) their association with social and economic participation across early adulthood. Drawing on a cohort of males (n = 890) from low-income neighborhoods, we used group-based multi-trajectory modeling to identify profiles of poly-substance use (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, illicit drugs) from age 13-17 years.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacterial infections are a significant health issue for individuals living with HIV (PLHIV), and although statins have shown protective effects in other groups, their impact on PLHIV is still debated.
  • This study aimed to assess whether statin usage reduces the chances of experiencing a first severe bacterial infection (SBI) in a large cohort of PLHIV from 2000 to 2018.
  • The results indicated that statins did not significantly affect the incidence of SBIs or pneumonia among PLHIV over the 18-year follow-up period, suggesting that statins may not offer the protective benefits seen in other populations.
