BACKGROUND Fibrosing mediastinitis (FM) is a rare, fibroproliferative disorder within the mediastinum. It is extremely rare for hematologic malignancies to develop as FM. CASE REPORT A 32-year-old Japanese man with a 1-month history of headache and 2-week history of facial swelling underwent chest computed tomography (CT); a diffuse mass-like lesion was revealed in the anterior mediastinum with severe stenosis of vital mediastinal organs.

Background: Regenerative endodontics requires an innovative delivery system to release antibiotics/growth factors in a sequential trend. This study focuses on developing/characterizing a thermoresponsive core-shell hydrogel designed for targeted drug delivery in endodontics.

Methods: The core-shell chitosan-alginate microparticles were prepared by electrospraying to deliver bone morphogenic protein-2 for 14 days and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) for 7-14 days.

Human Herpesvirus 6A Infection-Associated Acute Anterior Uveitis.

J Inflamm Res

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, 310003, People's Republic of China.

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection can cause ophthalmic diseases in immunocompetent patients, recipients of bone marrow transplants, and patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This study describes the case of a healthy 37-year-old male who presented with unilateral anterior uveitis (AU), significant anterior chamber exudation, pupillary membrane closure, increased intraocular pressure, and eyelid edema. Notably, HHV-6A was the only pathogenic agent identified in the blood and aqueous humor.

Objective: To present the clinical result of spinal fixation system made entirely of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced (CFR)-Hybrid Polyaryl-Ether-Ether-Ketone (PEEK).

Summary Of Background Data: Fusion surgery has been used to treat chronic low back pain caused by degenerative disk disease (DDD). The traditional pedicle screw system made of titanium, though biocompatible, can lead to complications, such as stress shielding and implant failure.

Purpose: There is paucity of guidelines with inadequate data available about the extent and prevention of bone and joint disease in beta-thalassemic patients in Indian population. This study aims to determine bone and joint involvement in beta-thalassemic patients. It evaluates serum biochemical parameters of bone formation and resorption and correlates with the symptomatology in these patients.

Background: Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is considered one of the biological treatments for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Patient selection remains a key factor to ensure that optimal treatment benefit and body mass index (BMI) are one of the key factors to be considered. This study aims to evaluate the influence of obesity on the duration of treatment benefit of BMAC for KOA.

Introduction: Interspace defects after osteochondral autograft transfer (OATS) are filled only with fibrocartilage. Attempts have been made to address these issues in OATS with procedures like mega OATS and Hexagonal Osteochondral Graft System. We have described the functional outcomes of a hybrid technique combining a regeneration and a restoration modality to address the interspace defect in OATS.

Total femoral replacement (TFR) is not a common surgery and most indications are for oncological pathologies. However, there are few instances where non-oncological indications might necessitate TFR; this may be a salvage surgery for failed previous hip and/or knee surgeries with consequent significant femur bone loss. We present a 59-year-old obese woman with right thigh pain and difficulty with walking of 5 years duration.

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have increased hip fracture risk. And the association between urine albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) and an increased risk of hip fracture in patients with T2DM remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between urinary ACR and hip fracture risk in postmenopausal women and aged men with T2DM.

Background: Kidney transplant recipients are uniquely exposed to the disordered bone metabolism associated with chronic kidney disease beginning before transplantation followed by chronic corticosteroid use after transplantation. Previous efforts to synthesize the rapidly accruing evidence regarding estimation and management of fracture risk in kidney transplant recipients are outdated and incomplete.

Objective: To synthesize the evidence informing the overall incidence, patient-specific risk prediction, and methods of prevention of fractures in patient living with a kidney transplant.

Unlabelled: During the Iron Age, north-eastern Iberian communities relied on crop cultivation and animal husbandry for their subsistence. The latter was mainly focused on caprine, with sheep being prominent due to their suitability to the Mediterranean climate, orography, and environment. Despite the pivotal role of sheep in livestock husbandry, information on Iberian communities' feeding strategies for this species is limited.

Osteoporosis, a prevalent bone metabolic disorder, has emerged as a pressing global public health concern. Recent studies have illuminated a crucial link between ferroptosis and the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. Nevertheless, the intricate mechanisms underlying the role of ferroptosis in this condition remain largely unexplored.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality among men. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are known to play a regulatory role in the development of various human cancers. LncRNA MAFG-divergent transcript (MAFG-DT) was reported to play a crucial role in tumor progression of multiple human cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, and gastric cancer.

Background: Extramedullary hemopoiesis (EMH) is a rare condition characterized by abnormal blood cell production outside the bone marrow, commonly occurring in the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and less frequently in the mediastinum.

Case Presentation: This case involves a 68-year-old male patient who was found to have a posterior mediastinal mass upon examination. A surgical biopsy was performed, and pathological examination confirmed it to be extramedullary hemopoiesis (EMH).

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a metabolic bone disease driven by estrogen deficiency, primarily manifesting as reduced bone mass and heightened fracture risk. Its development is intricately linked to the balance between Th17 and Treg cells. Recent studies have highlighted the significant role of gut homeostasis in PMOP.

Atalanto-occipital dislocations with type II fractures of the odontoid process are rare, reporting 7 cases for every 784 upper cervical spine injuries, an incidence of <0.3% and are related to a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Regarding C2 fractures, the most common are in the odontoid process, representing 7%, classified by Anderson and D'Alonso according to their level, with the highest rate of pseudarthrosis in zone II of up to 85% are caused mainly by car accidents.

Reduction and fixation of glenoid cavity fractures using arthroscopy cause little surgical trauma, allowing the complementary diagnosis and treatment of potentially associated injuries (either capsular, ligamentous or tendon lesions) with promising outcomes. The authors report a case of Ideberg type III glenoid fracture with a distal clavicle fracture which underwent percutaneous reduction and bone fixation (with Kirschner wires) using an arthroscopic technique. We describe the procedure and the outcomes after 18 years of follow-up.

A 33-year-old male patient developed distal femur chronic osteomyelitis with massive bone loss after an open grade-3b fracture. Following several failed treatments to eradicate infection, a tibial turn-up procedure was performed to provide a stable and functional stump. To avoid neurovascular problems, the popliteal vessels and sciatic nerve were moved medially, and the flap was rotated externally to decrease the collapse.
