Pregnancy represents a crucial timepoint to screen for disordered eating due to the significant adverse impact on the woman and her infant. There has been an increased interest in disordered eating in pregnancy since the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproportionately affected the mental health of pregnant women compared to the general population. This systematic review is an update to a previous review aiming to explore current psychometric evidence for any new pregnancy-specific instruments and other measures of disordered eating developed for non-pregnant populations.

Introduction: Sexual wellness plays a crucial role in an individual's quality of life, interpersonal relationships, and self-concept, particularly among older adults residing in residential aged care facilities, including those with dementia. However, there is currently a limited person-centered approach to understanding the unique preferences of each older person regarding their intimate and sexual behaviors. To address this gap, the (ISEP) tool was developed to facilitate meaningful discussions between healthcare professionals or workers and older individuals about their intimacy and sexuality needs and preferences.

Article Synopsis
  • The study developed normative fitness data for Australian police recruits engaging in aerobic fitness tests, specifically the 20-meter multistage fitness test (20MSFT) and the 2.4-km run.
  • The analysis included data from 5 cohorts, totaling 1,536 recruits for the 20MSFT and 1,499 for the 2.4-km run, providing percentile rankings based on performance divided by sex and age groups.
  • Findings indicated that linear regression models could explain 65-74% of the performance variance between the two tests, facilitating fitness benchmarking, goal setting, and injury rehabilitation for law enforcement recruits.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate prospective associations between participation in sports/recreational activities and the occurrence of moderate-to-severe psychological distress over 2 years in a sample of mid-aged Australians.

Methods: This prospective study used data from 6699 adults aged 40+ years, living in Brisbane in 2007, and surveyed in 2009, 2011 and 2013. Participants provided self-reported data on frequency of participation in each of 11 sports/recreational activities in past 12 months and completed the Kessler Psychological Distress 6-item Scale (K6).

J Foot Ankle Res

September 2024

School of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University, Clayton, Victoria, Australia.

Background: Diabetes related foot ulcer (DFU) is a leading cause of impaired quality of life, disability, hospitalisation, amputation and mortality in people with diabetes. It is therefore critical that podiatrists across all settings, including community settings, are confident and capable of providing care for diabetes-related foot complications. This study aims to describe current practice, confidence and anxiety levels of community podiatrists in the management of patients with foot ulceration.

Mapping the evidence about the natural history of acute infections commonly seen in primary care and managed with antibiotics: a scoping review.

BMC Infect Dis

July 2024

Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University, 14 University Dr, Robina, QLD, 4226, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • The scoping review aimed to map existing research on the natural history of acute infections in primary care, focusing on how these infections progress over time without specific treatments.
  • The study identified 40 systematic reviews predominantly covering respiratory infections, with only a small percentage explicitly addressing natural history data and symptom resolution.
  • Findings highlighted the need for more research, particularly on skin and soft tissue infections, to better inform clinicians' antibiotic stewardship practices.

  • Right ventricle (RV) failure is a common issue in cardiopulmonary diseases and accurately assessing RV function is critical for treatment, though it's challenging due to its complex anatomy and pathophysiology.
  • Traditional methods like TAPSE, RV S', and RV FAC have limitations, particularly load-dependency that complicates diagnosis during RV failure.
  • Newer echocardiographic techniques such as "strain," "RV-pulmonary arterial coupling," and "RV myocardial work" provide improved assessment by addressing load dependency, and this review explores these advancements and their implications.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been reportedly associated with excessive internet use, also known as internet addiction. As ADHD is the most common comorbidity in ASD, the present study examined the possibility that ADHD symptoms, and/or trait and mood factors linked to ASD, ADHD and internet addiction, could account for the association of ASD with internet addiction symptoms. A nonclinical young adult sample of 248 internet using men and women completed self-report measures of ASD and ADHD symptoms, alexithymia, impulsivity, negative moods and internet addiction symptoms.

Stem cell therapies can potentially treat various retinal degenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and inherited retinal diseases like retinitis pigmentosa. For these diseases, transplanted cells may include stem cell-derived retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells, photoreceptors, or a combination of both. Although stem cell-derived RPE cells have progressed to human clinical trials, therapies using photoreceptors and other retinal cell types are lagging.

Background: Consumer involvement in health research is when patients, their families and caregivers work with researchers on research projects. Despite the growing expectation for health services to facilitate the involvement of consumers in research, the practical integration of this approach is an ongoing process, with limited research conducted into how Australian health services can support this practice. This study explored consumer perspectives on the barriers and solutions to enabling consumer involvement in research within an Australian tertiary hospital and health service, and staff perspectives on the solutions to facilitating consumer involvement.
