Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment neuropathy, which causes numbness and pain in the thumb, the index and middle fingers and the radial side of the ring finger. Regular hand exercises may improve the symptoms and prevent carpal tunnel surgery. This study applied a novel ultrasonic stimulation method to test tactile sensitivity in CTS and also a mixed-reality-assisted (MR-assisted) exercise program which measured hand movements and provided haptic feedback for rehabilitation.

In this study we investigated challenges associated with comprehension of graphical patterns of accumulation (Experiment 1) and how to improve accumulation-based reasoning via nudging (Experiment 2). On each trial participants were presented with two separate graphs, each depicting a linear, saturating, or exponential data trajectory. They were then asked to make a binary decision based on their forecasts of how these trends would evolve.

Materials (Basel)

January 2024

Energy and Environmental Materials Research Centre (E2MC), School of Metallurgy, Northeastern University, Shenyang 110819, China.

This study investigates the improvement in the compressive strength of cellulose/cement-based composites. Methyl cellulose (MC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPMC) are separately used as the cellulose phase with different wt%. Graphene oxide (GO) and zoledronic acid (ZOL) are used as additives for bone regeneration for various formulations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the strange quark content of protons by measuring the production cross section of W bosons and charm quarks in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV, using data from the CMS detector at the LHC.
  • - W bosons are identified through their decays into leptons (electrons or muons) and neutrinos, while charm quarks are tagged by detecting muons or secondary vertices in jets.
  • - The measurements, which reach a precision of 1%, include both inclusive and differential analyses based on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the leptons, and the results are compared with advanced theoretical predictions in quantum chromodynamics.

The measurement of Z boson production is presented as a method to determine the integrated luminosity of CMS data sets. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of 13. Events with Z bosons decaying into a pair of muons are selected.

Intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH) is observed in humans as a result of the alteration of annulus fibrous (AF) and nucleus pulposus (NP) tissue compositions in intervertebral discs. In this study, we studied the feasibility of scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) in characterizing the herniated segments of AF and NP tissues from male and female patients. SAM determined the acoustic property variations in AF and NP tissues by calculating the acoustic impedance values of samples of 15 patients.

Machine learning models have found numerous successful applications in computational drug discovery. A large body of these models represents molecules as sequences since molecular sequences are easily available, simple, and informative. The sequence-based models often segment molecular sequences into pieces called chemical words, analogous to the words that make up sentences in human languages, and then apply advanced natural language processing techniques for tasks such as de novo drug design, property prediction, and binding affinity prediction.

Children's expectations about the stability of others' knowledge and preference states.

J Exp Child Psychol

April 2024

Department of Psychology, Boğaziçi University, Bebek, 34342 Istanbul, Turkey; Department of Cognition, Development and Educational Psychology, University of Barcelona. Electronic address:

It is a crucial ability to predict others' psychological states across time and contexts. Focusing on cultural inventions such as songs and stories, we contrasted children's attributions of stability with others' knowledge and preference states across time and space and whether these attributions change as a function of children's familiarity with the known/liked items. Children (91 4-year-olds and 97 6-year-olds) were introduced to characters who knew or liked a song, a story, a game and a dance that were either novel or familiar.

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.
