Binding of Phosphate Species to Ca and Mg in Aqueous Solution.

J Chem Theory Comput

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48824, United States.

Phosphate derivatives and their interaction with metal cations are involved in many important biological phenomena, so an accurate characterization of the phosphate-metal interaction is necessary to properly understand the role of phosphate-metal contacts in mediating biological function. Herein, we improved the standard 12-6 Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential via the usage of the 12-6-4 LJ model, which incorporates ion-induced dipole interactions. Via parameter scanning, we fine-tuned the 12-6-4 LJ polarizability values to obtain accurate absolute binding free energies for the phosphate anions HPO, HPO, PO coordinating with Ca and Mg.

Human γD-crystallin belongs to a crucial family of proteins known as crystallins located in the fiber cells of the human lens. Since crystallins do not undergo any turnover after birth, they need to possess remarkable thermodynamic stability. However, their sporadic misfolding and aggregation, triggered by environmental perturbations or genetic mutations, constitute the molecular basis of cataracts, which is the primary cause of blindness in the globe according to the World Health Organization.

Metallic zinc anodes in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) suffer from dendritic growth, low Coulombic efficiency, and high polarization during cycling. To mitigate these challenges, current collectors based on three-dimensional (3D) commercial copper foam (CCuF) are generally preferred. However, their utilization is constrained by their thickness, low electroactive surface area, and increased manufacturing expenses.

Macroporous cryogels are attractive scaffolds for biomedical applications, such as biomolecular immobilization, diagnostic sensing, and tissue engineering. In this study, thiol-reactive redox-responsive cryogels with a porous structure are prepared using photopolymerization of a pyridyl disulfide poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PDS-PEG-MA) monomer. Reactive cryogels are produced using PDS-PEG-MA and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) monomers, along with a PEG-based cross-linker and photoinitiator.

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯].

Genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) are promising computational tools that contribute to elucidating host-virus interactions at the system level and developing therapeutic strategies against viral infection. In this study, the effect of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on liver metabolism was investigated using integrated GEMs of human hepatocytes and SARS-CoV-2. They were generated for uninfected and infected hepatocytes using transcriptome data.

Understanding the magnitudes represented by numerals is a core component of early mathematical development and is often assessed by accuracy in situating numerals and fractions on a number line. Performance on these measures is consistently related to performance in other mathematics domains, but the strength of these relations may be overestimated because general cognitive ability has not been fully controlled in prior studies. The first of two meta-analyses (162 studies, 33,101 participants) confirmed a relation between performance on whole number (r = 0.

The recalcitrance of lignin impedes the efficient utilization of lignocellulosic biomass, hindering the efficient production of biogas and value-added materials. Despite the emergence of anaerobic digestion as a superior alternative to the aerobic method for lignin processing, achieving its feasibility requires thorough characterization of lignin-degrading anaerobic microorganisms, assessment of their biomethane production potential, and a comprehensive understanding of the degradation pathway. This study aimed to address the aforementioned necessities by bioaugmenting seed sludge with three distinct enriched lignin-degrading microbial consortia at both 25 °C and 37 °C.

Objective: Research suggests that executive functions and metacognitive abilities, including self-reflection and insight, may share underlying mechanisms since both rely on top-down cognitive processes and require self-regulation. However, these relationships have not been thoroughly examined by empirical research. The current study investigated the relationship between insight, self-reflection, and executive functions cross-sectionally across different stages of aging.
