Aristolochic Acid I (AAI) is widely present in traditional Chinese medicines derived from the Aristolochia genus and is known to cause significant damage to renal tubular epithelial cells. Genome-wide screening has proven to be a powerful tool in identifying critical genes associated with the toxicity of exogenous substances. To identify undiscovered key genes involved in AAI-induced renal toxicity, a genome-wide CRISPR library screen was conducted in the human kidney-2 (HK-2) cell line.

Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology, Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Tilburg University, Tilburg, the Netherlands.

Climate anxiety is a phenomenon that is gaining importance due to the general public's increased awareness of the worsening climate crisis. At present, climate anxiety is not operationalized consistently across the existing literature. It is important to gain more consensus on the definition and operationalization of climate anxiety to facilitate reliable and generalizable research and to further develop interventions.

College of Forestry, Guizhou University, Guiyang, 550025, China; Research Institute of Forestry, Chinese Academy of Forestry, Beijing, 100091, China. Electronic address:

In recent years, the rapid development of the global economy has led to an increasing impact of the ongoing climate warming phenomenon on the hydrological cycle. In this context, the runoff changes affected by human activities are more severe. This study classifies climate scenarios based on carbon emission levels into "low-carbon" (SSP1-2.

The disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As incineration becomes the primary method of MSW disposal in China, MSW incineration (MSWI) plants are expected to play a crucial role in mitigating GHG emissions in the waste sector. This study estimated the quarterly GHG emissions from two representative MSWI plants in Qingdao using a life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach.

How can we create a dual benefit scenario that improves both the ecological environment and export performance? This study aims to investigate whether the introduction of the Environmental Protection Tax Law (EPTL) has promoted the growth of corporate export. By treating the formal implementation of China's EPTL on January 1, 2018, as an exogenous economic event, this paper takes A-share listed companies in China from 2013 to 2022 as a sample and uses the Difference-in-Differences (DID) model to analyze the specific effects of the EPTL on corporate exports. The results indicate that the EPTL improves corporate exports significantly.

Enhancing fish sludge bioconversion kinetics for nutrient recovery in aquaponics using a modified biological aerated filter with a novel media of polyhedral hollow spheres.

School of Environmental Science & Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China; Yazhou Bay Institute of Deepsea Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Hainan, 572025, China. Electronic address:

Nutrient recovery from aquaculture sludge is vital for promoting hydroponic plant growth and achieving near-zero solid waste discharge in aquaponic systems. Modified biological aerated filters (MBAFs) are promising because of the dual capabilities of aquaculture sludge collection and aerobic mineralization. However, the bioconversion kinetics, which is indirectly related to the packed media, need to be improved.

This manuscript critically examines the intricate interplay between diverse foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, energy intensity, and their consequential effects on circular economies (CEs), specifically in terms of the waste recycling ratio, within the member states of the European Union over the period spanning from 2000 to 2021. Our findings substantiate that inflows and outflows of FDI have different implications for waste recycling, where an increase of 1% OFDI implies an increase of recycling ratio by 0.03%, a relationship that is potentially contingent upon the inherent characteristics of the flow itself in relation to its contributions to local productivity dynamics.

Posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in liver transplant recipients (LTRs). We used the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) database to compare the incidence of developing PTDM across the United States and develop a risk prediction model for new-onset PTDM using OPTN region as well as donor-related, recipient-related, and transplant-related factors. All US adult, primary, deceased donor, LTRs between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2016, with no prior history of diabetes noted, were identified.

Background: Skin care of sick newborns is important because skin acts as a barrier to prevent neonates from infections which may lead to neonatal morbidity and mortality. The highly technological environment of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) makes them vulnerable to loss of skin integrity. In acute care setting maintenance of skin integrity is considered as an established quality indicator representing nursing care.

Background: Punctal agenesis (PA) is a rare congenital anomaly that can occur in isolation or as part of an underlying syndrome. The benefit of genetic assessment in individuals with PA and clinical features that should prompt molecular workup has not been systematically studied. The aim of this study was to identify ocular and extraocular features associated with PA and determine its association with an underlying syndrome.

Malignancy has a crucial impact on long-term survival after liver transplantation. There has been enhanced early detection rates with refined cancer screening and improved prognosis for many cancer diagnoses in the general population with the advent of targetted anti-cancer therapies. Similar advancements have not occurred in the transplant population over this same timeframe.

An anisotropic plasmonic trimer is proposed as an effective spectroscopic amplifier for the maximum signal enhancement of the Hyper-Raman Scattering (HRS) process. The three-particle system is composed of asymmetric Au nanorings arranged collinearly in a J-aggregate configuration and illuminated by a longitudinally polarized light. The optical properties of the considered trimer have been numerically simulated by the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method.

Application of Subretinal Balanced Salt Solution Injection: A Novel technique in treating Severe idiopathic Epiretinal Membrane.

Retina

October 2024

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Retinal Functions and Diseases, Tianjin Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Disease, Eye Institute and School of Optometry, Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin 384300, China.

Purpose: To describe a novel surgical approach for treating patients diagnosed with severe idiopathic epiretinal membranes (iERM) featuring ectopic intrafoveal layers (EIFL).

Method: A retrospective, interventional case series was conducted involving eight cases of iERM with EIFL. The technique involved a 27-gauge vitrectomy, removal of all vitreous adhesions, and injection of approximately 100μl sub-retinal balanced salt solution (BSS) using a 41-gauge subretinal needle, creating 3-4 localized bleb-like elevations around the folded retina to loosen it.

Congenital infiltrating lipomatosis of the face is a rare aggressive-benign disorder characterized by progressive hemifacial overgrowth and complex, often asymmetrical, facial differences. Recently linked with the PIK3CA-Related Overgrowth Spectrum, it arises from mosaic mutations in the PIK3CA gene. Treatment, largely supportive and tailored to individual clinical presentations, requires a multidisciplinary approach.
