Background: Postoperative infections significantly impact patient outcomes and costs, exacerbated by late diagnoses, yet early reliable predictors are scarce. Existing artificial intelligence (AI) models for postoperative infection prediction often lack external validation or perform poorly in local settings when validated. We aimed to develop locally valid models as part of the PERISCOPE AI system to enable early detection, safer discharge, and more timely treatment of patients.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloid N-oxides (PA-N-oxides) are predominant in plants and herbal foods, and are converted to pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) upon consumption, leading to toxicity. The effect of interindividual kinetic differences on the relative potency values of PA-N-oxides compared to their PAs (REP) was studied, with riddelliine N-oxide (RIDO) and riddelliine (RID) as model compounds. In vitro kinetic data measured in incubations with 30 fecal and 25 liver S9 donor samples showed high variation across individuals, where the interindividual variability was captured with Bayesian multilevel regression.

Introduction And Aims: Repeatedly undergoing supervised, medical, detoxification from chronic alcohol use may contribute to impairments in neurocognitive functioning of patients with an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Unsupervised, non-medical, detoxification, however, may also contribute to neurocognitive impairments, given the absence of first choice prescription medication to counteract severe withdrawal effects. So far, findings from previous studies are inconclusive and specifically effects of non-medical detoxifications are not investigated yet.

Early Detection of Psychosis in Eating Disorders: Unnecessary or a Useful Addition?

Early Interv Psychiatry

January 2025

Mental Health Organization 'GGZ Oost Brabant', Centre for Eating Disorders, Helmond, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to address the confusion surrounding symptoms that may indicate either a psychosis spectrum disorder or an eating disorder (ED), highlighting the need for better cooperation in treatment programs for early detection of both issues.* -
  • Using a cross-sectional approach, researchers assessed a sample of outpatients aged 16-35 through various screening tools to identify individuals at risk for either condition, revealing that over half showed signs of an eating disorder and nearly 28.3% had at-risk mental states for psychosis.* -
  • The findings suggest a significant overlap between psychotic symptoms and eating disorder traits, underlining the importance of integrated treatment approaches and encouraging further research into the connections between psychosis and ED symptoms.*

Cardiovascular disease risk after breast cancer treatment in patients with a BRCA1/2 pathogenic variant.

Breast Cancer Res Treat

October 2024

Division of Psychosocial Research and Epidemiology, The Netherlands Cancer Institute, Plesmanlaan 121, 1066, Amsterdam, CX, The Netherlands.

Purpose: Breast cancer (BC) treatment can induce adverse events, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). Defective DNA repair, as in carriers of BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (BRCA1/2pv), may contribute to CVD risk. We aimed to study if female BRCA1/2pv carriers are more sensitive to develop CVD after BC treatment than BC patients without a known BRCA1/2pv.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and subsequent free thyroxine (FT4) concentrations outside the reference interval (RI) are used to diagnose thyroid diseases. Most laboratories do not provide age-specific RIs for TSH and FT4 beyond childhood, although TSH concentrations vary with age. Therefore, we aimed to establish TSH and FT4 age-specific RIs throughout life and aimed to determine whether using these RIs would result in reclassification of thyroid disease diagnoses in adults.

The positive results of MDMA from Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials in MDMA-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) call for a critical evaluation of its regulatory status within the European mental healthcare system. This is driven by the recent submission of MDMA-AT for FDA approval in the United States. Unless coordinated efforts in the European regulatory landscape start, there may be potential divergences in national regulatory strategies.
