Disciplinary Thinking for the Scholarship of Nursing Research.

Nurs Sci Q

January 2025

Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL, USA.

The author critiques the current American Association of Colleges of Nursing definition of nursing scholarship for its lack of emphasis on building discipline-specific knowledge. The author defines nursing scholarship as scholarly activities and formal investigations designed to generate, synthesize, translate, apply, and disseminate discipline-specific knowledge that advances nursing's societal commitments and responsibilities in promoting human health, human betterment, and wellbecoming. Nursing scholarship guided by disciplinary thinking consists of scholarship that is (a) informed by nursing philosophy; (b) framed within nursing's metaparadigm concepts; (c) situated within a nursing paradigm; (d) conceptualized within a nursing conceptual framework or nursing midrange theory; and (e) focused on, depending on one's paradigmatic and theoretical perspective, developing and testing concepts in nursing classification systems.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review evaluated how upper gastrointestinal (UGI) dysmotility affects outcomes in patients with colonic inertia (CI) undergoing surgery.
  • It found that patients with UGI dysmotility were more likely to experience recurrence of constipation after surgery and had poorer improvements in quality of life compared to those without UGI issues.
  • The review suggests routine evaluation of UGI function before surgery for CI, as many patients with UGI dysmotility may go undiagnosed.

Acta Biomater

December 2024

Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering and Computer Science, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL 33431, United States.

The intrinsic electrical and mechanical properties of cells are not only valuable biophysical markers reflective of physiological conditions but also play important roles in the development and progression of human diseases. Existing single-cell techniques are restricted to assessing either mechanical or electrical properties. We introduce the development of electro-deformation spectroscopy (EDS), namely the frequency-dependent electro-deformation, as a new method for simultaneous electrical and mechanical characterization of individual cells in suspension.

The menstrual cycle (MC) is a series of hormonal fluctuations that occur approximately every 22-35 days in reproductive-age females, often resulting in a range of physical and psychological symptoms at different points of the cycle. MC symptoms range from mild discomfort to debilitating effects. One intervention that may be able to address these symptoms is yoga, a mind-body practice that incorporates physical postures with breathwork to foster a mindful connection to the body.

Hybridization and introgression are widespread in nature, with important implications for adaptation and speciation. Since heterogametic hybrids often have lower fitness than homogametic individuals, a phenomenon known as Haldane's rule, loci inherited strictly through the heterogametic sex rarely introgress. We focus on the Y-chromosomal history of guenons, African primates that hybridized extensively in the past.

Background: Cerebral aneurysm rupture is a major cause of potential years of life lost. Research on rupture risk has often compared unruptured and ruptured aneurysms, with the implicit assumption that the rupture event does not significantly change aneurysm morphology. However, aneurysm morphology is charged by rupture, although precisely how remains a matter of debate.

Unlabelled: Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a promising treatment for hematologic malignancies, but intensive conditioning leads to immunosuppression and susceptibility to healthcare-associated infections (HAI). Despite standard prevention measures, bloodstream infections (BSI) impact a significant percentage of immunocompromised HCT patients. Incidence of BSI can be mitigated by chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) bathing-an underutilized infection-prevention strategy.

Objective: Benzodiazepine rescue medications are established as therapy for acute termination of seizure clusters. A post-hoc analysis of a clinical trial of seizure cluster treatment with diazepam nasal spray found a potential longer-term impact over a year of treatment. In this retrospective analysis, we tested the hypothesis that benzodiazepine-treated seizure clusters are associated with prolonged time to the next seizure cluster compared with untreated seizure clusters in a patient-reported real-world database.

Metaparadigms differentiate disciplines in terms of how each discipline develops its knowledge and its scholarship. Four domains comprise the nursing metaparadigm: environment, person, health, and nursing Of these domains, the environment domain is the least identified. Relating this domain to the broader substantive meaning of the geographical-landscape setting of nursing encounters requires further explanation Through a discursive process, the article positions "space and place" by referencing the nursing environment.

Immediate Treatment of Seizure Clusters: A Conceptual Roadmap to Expedited Seizure Management.

Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat

November 2024

Clinical Development and Medical Affairs, Neurelis, Inc., San Diego, CA, USA.

Some patients with epilepsy continue to have seizures despite daily treatment with antiseizure medications. This includes seizure clusters (also known as acute repetitive seizures), which are an increase in seizure frequency that is different from the usual seizure pattern for that patient. In the literature, the term "rescue" is used for pharmacologic treatment for seizure clusters, but clarity regarding timing or whether a caregiver or patient should wait until a moment of life-threatening urgency before administering the medication is lacking.
