Article Synopsis
  • Congenital neutropenias in Israel show a diverse genetic landscape, with a focus on severe cases, particularly highlighting the prevalence of G6PC3 variants in consanguineous populations.
  • A total of 65 patients were analyzed, revealing that the majority of severe cases were linked to ELANE and G6PC3 mutations, while some had other genetic variants or conditions like cyclic neutropenia or Shwachman-Diamond syndrome.
  • The study emphasizes the importance of ongoing monitoring for patients due to a significant occurrence of myeloid transformation, indicating gaps in medical understanding as some patients remain without a clear genetic diagnosis.

In the treatment of cancer, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have demonstrated significantly greater effectiveness compared to conventional cytotoxic or platinum-based chemotherapies. To assess the efficacy of ICI's in penile squamous cell carcinoma (pSCC) we performed a retrospective observational study. We reviewed electronic medical records of patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), diagnosed between January 2020 and February 2023.

  • Researchers studied a new kind of MRI called ultrafast dynamic-contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI to see if it could help spot breast cancer in women who are breastfeeding.
  • They found that this new MRI method showed breast cancer earlier and better than the traditional methods, making it easier to spot.
  • The new method might help doctors take better care of breastfeeding women by improving how they look for breast cancer.

Functional electrical stimulation of the ankle dorsiflexor (DF-FES) may have advantages over ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) in managing pediatric cerebral palsy (CP). This study assessed the functional benefit and orthotic effect of DF-FES in children with hemiplegic CP. We conducted an open-label prospective study on children with hemiplegic CP ≥ 6 years who used DF-FES for five months.

Community Health Program, School of Public Health, Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences, University of Haifa, Israel, Ethics committee, Bnei Zion Medical Center.

The Israeli Legal Capacity and Guardianship Law, denies minors the right to decide upon medical treatment, and regards medical treatment of minors, including contraception, without parental consent as an infringement of parental autonomy. Yet, adolescent girls occasionally ask doctors to prescribe them contraceptives, while refusing parental involvement. This article reviews the relevant legal situation, examines some comparative legal stances and refers to the ethical aspects that should be considered during contraceptive advice to minors, in light of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Background: Current guidelines for the treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) are based on studies that have excluded or underrepresented older patients.

Objectives: To assess the value of guideline directed medical therapy (GDMT) in HFrEF patients 80 years of age and older.

Methods: A single-center retrospective study included patients hospitalized with a first and primary diagnosis of acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and ejection fraction (EF) of ≤ 40%.

Patients with heart failure (HF) with iron deficiency (ID) have worse New York Heart Association class and are at a higher risk of recurrent hospitalizations. Intravenous (IV) iron has been shown to improve exercise ability and reduce hospitalizations. IV sodium ferric gluconate complex (SFGC) has been found to be safe and affordable but has not been studied in this population in a randomized trial.

Background: Angiogenesis is a major contributor to the development of inflammation during Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as the vascularization of the pannus provides nutrients and oxygen for the infiltrating immune cells and proliferating synoviocytes. Tocilizumab (TCZ) is an anti-IL-6 receptor antibody that is used in the treatment of RA patients, and has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects. However, its effects on angiogenesis are not fully elucidated, and the molecular mechanisms regulating this effect are unknown.

ESC Heart Fail

February 2022

Departments of Internal Medicine "B" and "H", Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel.

Aims: The effect of elevated heart rate (HR) on morbidity and mortality is evident in chronic stable heart failure; data in this regard in acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) setting are scarce. In this single-centre study, we sought to address the prognostic value of HR and beta-blocker dosage at discharge on all-cause mortality among patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction and ADHF.

Methods And Results: In this retrospective observational study, 2945 patients were admitted for the first time with the primary diagnosis of ADHF between January 2008 and February 2018.
