Introduction: Nocturnal enuresis is a very common and socially distressing condition among children. There are qualitative studies published in children with bowel and bladder problems with a focus on health-related quality of life and the burden of the condition, but there is a lack of knowledge of the experience of managing the treatment procedures at home. From a clinical viewpoint, it can be assumed that the procedures entail a lot of work and have an impact on everyday life apart from the disorders per se, but the actual voices of the children have not been heard.

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI), the complaint of involuntary leakage of urine, has a substantial impact on the quality of life of older adults. Most UI research is driven by researchers and lacks the patient perspective. The goal of this qualitative study was to gain the perspective of older adults in formulating a research agenda tailored to address their questions and improve their experience with managing UI.

This article represents a unique CT-based sign called the Mickey Mouse sign in a diabetic female who presented with abdominal distension and mixed urinary symptoms. The CT scan showed that the bladder was massively dilated but compliant without impacting the upper urinary tract. The subtle clinical presentation and the impressive CT scan findings encouraged us to report this case as underactive bladder syndrome (UAB) is underreported and underinvestigated.

The indirect costs of five cancers in Egypt: years of life lost and productivity costs.

J Med Econ

December 2025

Outcomes Research, EEMEA Oncology, MSD Sharp & Dohme GmbH, Munich, Germany.

Background: In Egypt, there were 150,578 new cancer cases and 95,275 cancer deaths in 2022, indicating a substantial burden on patients and the healthcare system. The analysis aims to support decision-making related to investments in cancer prevention and new treatments, by highlighting the economic burden associated with five types of cancer.

Methods: The human capital approach was used to estimate productivity losses from premature mortality due to liver, lung, breast, bladder, and cervical cancer in Egypt in 2019 by calculating years of life lost (YLL), years of productive life lost (YPLL), and present value of future lost productivity (PVFLP).

  • The study examines bladder stone treatment trends in Germany from 2006 to 2020, focusing on data from a national hospital billing database.
  • The number of therapeutic interventions for lower urinary tract stones rose significantly, with transurethral cystolithotripsy (TUCL) becoming the most commonly performed procedure.
  • While TUCL's popularity increased, the overall use of open cystolithotomy and the combination of TUCL with prostate resection saw a decrease, indicating shifts in treatment practices.

Sacral nerve preservation on total sacrectomy of a large atypical sacral chordoma resection: A case report.

Int J Surg Case Rep

November 2024

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Faculty of medicine Universitas Padjadjaran, Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chordoma is a slow-growing, benign tumor that rarely occurs in the spine, but can cause significant neurological issues due to its mass effect on the spinal cord or nerves when symptomatic.
  • - A case involving a 39-year-old male highlighted a chordoma in the sacral region, which caused pain and dysfunction, leading to surgical removal and stabilization, despite a complication during the procedure.
  • - Post-surgery, the patient showed good outcomes with minimal pain and no issues with bowel or bladder function, emphasizing the potential for effective management and early mobilization following lumbopelvic stabilization.

Bladder cancer is a relatively rare malignancy; however, women are more likely to present with muscle invasive disease and require radical cystectomy. Radical cystectomy is a life-altering operation, requiring thoughtful consideration of both urologic and gynecologic organs. In order to improve the standard of care for women undergoing radical cystectomy, Urologists should adopt a thorough, patient-centered approach to surgical planning.

Effect of pelvic floor muscle training on urinary incontinence symptoms in postmenopausal women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

January 2025

Laboratory of Neuromuscular and Cardiovascular Study of Motion (LANECASM), Physiotherapy Department, University of West Attica (UNIWA), Athens, Greece.

Objective: Urinary incontinence (UI) is common in women of all age groups, but postmenopausal women (MW) have a higher incidence of these symptoms. The International Continence Society suggests that women with UI should first try a conservative treatment, such as pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT), which aims to enhance the strength and rectify the activation patterns of the pelvic floor muscles. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of PFMT, either on its own, or in conjunction with other physical therapy, in reducing the severity of UI symptoms in MW.

Jackstone calculi are a rare and distinctive type of urinary stone characterized by their radiating spicule structure. They are primarily found in the bladder, and also occur in the renal pelvis. Because jackstone calculi are infrequently encountered in clinical practice, studies on their pathophysiology and clinical implications are relatively limited.

Article Synopsis
  • Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is a serious complication that can arise after surgeries like hysterectomy, often leading to other issues such as pelvic organ prolapse and a decrease in quality of life for women.
  • A case study of a 53-year-old woman with VVF and cystocele demonstrates successful treatment through a single-step transvaginal surgery, which improved her urinary incontinence and overall wellbeing.
  • VVF and cystocele post-hysterectomy are uncommon but can significantly affect women's health; this case highlights that one-time surgical intervention can be an effective solution, minimizing the need for multiple treatments.

We described two patients diagnosed with rare bladder metastasis (BM) from pancreatic adenocarcinoma, a prevalent neoplastic disease primarily associated with ductal adenocarcinoma. The overall prognosis for those patients with metastasis is very poor, with a 5-year survival rate of < 3%. The scarcity of cases in the literature makes this series a significant contribution as it presents the first documented instance of BM originating from pancreatobiliary ampullary cancer and a rare case associated with the Krukenberg tumor.

Article Synopsis
  • Divergent differentiation in urothelial carcinoma complicates accurate histopathological diagnosis, as traditional cancer features can be sparse, leading to potential oversights by inexperienced pathologists.
  • Recognizing this differentiation is vital not only for establishing a correct diagnosis and preventing the false reporting of rare tumors but also because it influences the classification of the cancer as high-grade, impacting patient treatment and management.
  • A case study of a male patient revealed a high-grade urothelial carcinoma with features resembling primarily colonic-type adenocarcinoma, showcasing the importance of identifying divergent differentiation to rule out metastasis from other organs.

  • The study investigates the health effects of repeated firefighting seasons on workers in Alberta, focusing on the relationship between hours worked and illnesses like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and asthma.
  • A cohort was formed by linking employment records from Alberta Wildfire with health and cancer diagnostic data from 1998 to 2022, allowing for a thorough analysis of firefighters' health over time.
  • Results indicated that while increased firefighting hours were linked to higher risks of respiratory diseases and injury, they could also be protective against cardiovascular disease and mental health issues when balanced appropriately.
