December 2018

Radiation Oncology Unit, Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine - DIMES, University of Bologna, S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, via Giuseppe Massarenti 9, 40138, Bologna, Italy.

The main clinical goal for patients with advanced or metastatic thoracic cancer is palliation of tumor-related symptoms and improvement of quality of life. The aim of this phase I-II trial was to define the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of a short-course of palliative radiotherapy (RT) and to evaluate its efficacy in terms of palliative response. A phase I trial was planned with escalating dose increments.

Clin Exp Metastasis

October 2018

Radiation Oncology Center, Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine - DIMES, S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, University of Bologna, Via Massarenti 9, 40138, Bologna, Italy.

Metastases with soft tissues invasion, impending fractures or spinal cord compression (complicated bone metastases) represent a common clinical problem in advanced cancers and frequently lead to deterioration of patients' quality of life (QoL). A phase I-II study was planned to define the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of a short-course radiotherapy (RT) and its efficacy in palliation of complicated bone metastases. A phase I trial was designed with three dose-escalation steps: 16, 18, and 20 Gy.

Phase I-II Study of Short-course Accelerated Radiotherapy (SHARON) for Palliation in Head and Neck Cancer.

Anticancer Res

April 2018

Radiation Oncology Center, Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine (DIMES), S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of a short-course accelerated radiotherapy for treating advanced head and neck cancer and its metastases.
  • A phase I trial with 48 patients established the MTD at 20 Gy, leading to a phase II trial that reported an 82.7% palliative response rate and a median duration of palliation of 3 months.
  • The results suggested that short-course accelerated radiotherapy is both well tolerated and effective for symptom relief, paving the way for future research.

Department of Medical Imaging/Radiology, Nemours Children's Health System/Nemours Children's Hospital, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, USA.

Ultrasound is the primary imaging modality of the pediatric female pelvis and is often requested to evaluate girls with pelvic or abdominal pain or abnormal bleeding. The US interpretation can help guide the clinician toward medical or surgical management. Here we discuss the normal US anatomy of the female pelvis and illustrate, through case examples, conditions encountered when performing emergent pelvic US for common and uncommon clinical scenarios.

Background: Club foot is a common congenital deformity affecting 150 000-200 000 children every year. Untreated patients end up walking on the side or back of the affected foot, with severe social and economic consequences. Club foot is highly treatable by the Ponseti method, a non-invasive technique that has been described as highly suitable for use in resource-limited settings.

We digitized the radiography teaching file at Black Lion Hospital (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) during a recent trip, using a standard digital camera and a fluorescent light box. Our goal was to photograph every radiograph in the existing library while optimizing the final image size to the maximum resolution of a high quality tablet computer, preserving the contrast resolution of the radiographs, and minimizing total library file size. A secondary important goal was to minimize the cost and time required to take and process the images.

Background: Managing blood stream infection in Africa is hampered by lack of bacteriological support needed for antimicrobial stewardship, and background data needed for empirical treatment. A combined pro- and retrospective approach was used to overcome thresholds in clinical research in Africa.

Methods: Outcome and characteristics including age, HIV infection, pancytopenia and bacteriological results were studied in 292 adult patients with two or more SIRS criteria using univariate and confirming multivariate logistic regression models.
