Purpose: The effect of pre-triage visual acuity (VA) measurement on triage accuracy in a busy ophthalmic casualty department was investigated as a possible means to improve triage quality.

Methods: All 576 patients attending the accident and emergency department (A&E) at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) over a period of 4 days were included in this prospective cross-sectional study. Patients were assigned to two groups: those who underwent a VA measurement prior to triage (n = 242) and a control group who did not have a VA measurement (n = 234).

Background Falls among elderly adults are one of the most common reasons that could lead to injury and modality, as vision is one of the modifiable risk factors for falls. By assessing it, we can detect those needing further follow-up with opticians or ophthalmologists, lowering the risk of falls secondary to poor vision. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious threat to global public health, with approximately 5 million deaths associated with bacterial AMR in 2019. Tackling AMR requires a multifaceted and cohesive approach that ranges from increased understanding of mechanisms and drivers at the individual and population levels, AMR surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, improved infection prevention and control measures, and strengthened global policies and funding to development of novel antimicrobial therapeutic strategies. In this rapidly advancing field, this Review provides a concise update on AMR, encompassing epidemiology, evolution, underlying mechanisms (primarily those related to last-line or newer generation of antibiotics), infection prevention and control measures, access to antibiotics, antimicrobial stewardship, AMR surveillance, and emerging non-antibiotic therapeutic approaches.

Severe sickle retinopathy is commonly known in adults but not in children, hence any related treatment for sickle retinopathy in children was not well described. We reported 2 paediatric sickle patients (aged 12 and 13) presented with severe sickle retinopathy and described details of their disease progression and treatments over 2-3 years, along with the challenges faced when managing this particular group of young age sickle cell patients. Our case reports also demonstrated the benefits of laser photocoagulation treatment to early sickle proliferative disease, and how complications from advanced severe retinopathy hindered effective treatments.
