Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children with epilepsy (CWE) is multifactorial and can be affected not only by epilepsy-specific variables but also co-occurring conditions such as sleep disturbances, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While highly prevalent in CWE, these conditions are underdiagnosed despite having a significant impact on HRQOL. Sleep problems have a complex relationship with epilepsy and neurodevelopmental characteristics.

Department of Paediatric Surgery and Urology, Birmingham Children's Hospital, Birmingham, UK; Institute of Cancer and Genomics, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK. Electronic address:

Introduction: Jejunal interposition (JI) is an option for oesophageal replacement in children; ensuring good graft perfusion is essential. We report three cases where Indocyanine Green (ICG) with Near-Infrared Fluorescence (NIRF) was used to assess perfusion during graft selection, passage into the chest and anastomotic assessment. This extra assessment may reduce risk of anastomotic leak and/or stricture.

Caring for infants, children and young people with an acquired brain injury (ABI) can be challenging due to their developing brain and reliance on parents and caregivers. It is essential that children's nurses are able to perform effective neurological observations, because these can identify deterioration and inform the management of patients with an ABI. This is the first of two articles that aim to encourage accuracy and consistency when undertaking neurological observations in infants, children and young people with an ABI to optimise their care.

Background: Bench liver reduction, with or without intestinal length reduction (LR) (coupled with delayed closure and abdominal wall prostheses), has been a strategy adopted by our program for small children due to the limited availability of size-matched donors. This report describes the short, medium, and long-term outcomes of this graft reduction strategy.

Methods: A single-center, retrospective analysis of children that underwent intestinal transplantation (April 1993 to December 2020) was performed.

Objective:  There has been an increasing use of trampolines for recreation by children in recent years. Many studies have explored the different types of injuries sustained due to falls from trampolines, but so far none have focused specifically on cranial and spinal injuries. In this study, we describe the pattern of cranial and spinal injuries sustained by pediatric patients that were associated with the use of trampolines and their management in a tertiary pediatric neurosurgery unit over a period of 10 years.

Stüve-Wiedemann Syndrome (STWS) is an autosomal recessive condition caused by variants in the LIFR gene, presenting with respiratory failure, hyperthermia and skeletal dysplasia in the neonatal period. Historically identified as a lethal condition, more children are now managed holistically from early in life with multidisciplinary team involvement with improved outcomes. This stems from early diagnosis, supported by molecular testing in the pre and postnatal periods.

A low amino acid (AA)/protein diet is the principal treatment for many inherited amino acid disorders (IMDs). Due to their low AA content, plant foods constitute an essential part of diet therapy. However, data on their AA composition are limited, which leads to an estimation of AA intake from protein content rather than an accurate calculation of true AA intake.

Article Synopsis
  • The 2022 global outbreak of acute hepatitis in young children pointed to abnormal causes, particularly linked to infections like HHV-6B and adenovirus-41F in severely affected cases requiring liver transplants.
  • The end of COVID lockdowns likely exposed children to infections they hadn’t encountered before, potentially leading to abnormal immune responses and serious complications.
  • A case series highlighted three infants with primary HHV-6B infection who developed acute hepatitis and liver failure, underscoring the lethal potential of these common viruses in young children with immature immune systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of the PRRX1 gene in craniosynostosis, focusing on how certain variants (missense and loss-of-function) affect craniofacial development, with previous research linking PRRX1 to preosteogenic cells in cranial sutures.
  • Researchers used sequencing methods to identify rare variants in PRRX1 among patients suffering from craniosynostosis, discovering a total of 18 individuals with potential pathogenic variants and noting abnormal behavior of mutant proteins through immunofluorescence analyses.
  • The findings highlight that PRRX1 plays a significant role in cranial suture development, and the presence of pathogenic variants is frequently inherited from non-affected relatives,
