The serological response to the influenza virus vaccine is highly heterogeneous for reasons that are not entirely clear. While the impact of demographic factors such as age, body mass index (BMI), sex, prior vaccination and titer levels are known to impact seroconversion, they only explain a fraction of the response. To identify signatures of the vaccine response, we analyzed 273 protein levels from 138 serum samples of influenza vaccine recipients (2019-2020 season).

In recent years, the high availability of methane in the shale gas reserves has raised significant interest in its conversion to high-value chemicals but this process is still not commercially viable. Metal oxides, due to their surface heterogeneity and the presence of Lewis acidic and basic site pairs are known to facilitate the activation of C-H bonds of methane. In this work, we investigate the C-H bond activation of methane on pristine and doped γ-Al O clusters using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Ocular drug delivery is a significantly challenging task due to the presence of various anatomical and physiological barriers in the eye. Naturally available polysaccharides, when used as drug vehicles provide increased retention time, bioavailability, and penetration due to their unique mucoadhesive and charge-possessing nature. This review discusses the polysaccharide-based drug delivery system for the eye.

Pain is a personalized event or body alarm system that can limit a patient's activities and lead to negative repercussions. The commercially available conventional treatment strategies like oral, parenteral, and topical drug delivery systems for pain management are associated with side effects and poor patient compliance. The transdermal route is eminent for its painless distribution.

It has been long known that low molecular weight resists can achieve a very high resolution, theoretically close to the probe diameter of the electron beam lithography (EBL) system. Despite technological improvements in EBL systems, the advances in resists have lagged behind. Here we demonstrate that a low-molecular-mass single-source precursor resist (based on cadmium(II) ethylxanthate complexed with pyridine) is capable of a achieving resolution (4 nm) that closely matches the measured probe diameter (∼3.

Nanofibers are fibrous nanocarriers that can be synthesized from natural polymers, synthetic polymers, semiconducting materials, composite materials, and carbon-based materials. Recently, natural polysaccharides-based nanofibers are gaining attention in the field of pharmaceuticals and biomedical as these are biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, and economic. Nanofibers can deliver a significant amount of drug to the targeted site and provide effective interaction of therapeutic agent at the site of action due to a larger surface area.

Electronic devices with multifunctional capabilities is forever an attractive area with diverse scope including towards developing solutions to sustainable energy technology. Microbial biofuel cells (MiBFCs) are one such sustainable energy technology based electronic device which can not only harvest energy, but can perform biosensing leading to bioremediation. However, low energy yield, costly fabrication procedures and bulky devices are some of the limitations of such MiBFCs.

Ru-Bis(pyridyl)borate complex (CAT) is an efficient catalyst for ammonia borane (AB) dehydrogenation. Although the mechanistic pathway of this catalyst has been theoretically investigated previously, the gap between the experimental findings and the computational results could not be bridged thus far. In our study, using density functional theory calculations, we elucidate the mechanism of AB dehydrogenation of CAT at a variable degree of ligand hydrogenation.

A series of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) plant nanonutrients in citrate form were prepared by an eco-friendly solid-state grinding of the respective nitrates and citric acid. Ball-milling of the as-prepared Fe and Zn citrates resulted in nanosize particles. The as-prepared and ball-milled Fe and Zn citrates were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD).

We have studied brain connectivity using a biologically inspired model of the visual pathway consisting of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus, and layers 4 and 6 of the primary visual cortex. The connectivity parameters in the model are informed by the existing anatomical parameters from mammals and rodents. In the base state, the LGN and layer 6 populations in the model oscillate with dominant alpha frequency, while the layer 4 oscillates in the theta band.

The field of ophthalmic drug delivery is undergoing rapid changes not only in the evolution of pharmacologic agents but also in the novel drug delivery vehicles. The ocular surface has limitations to drug penetration because of the presence of tight junctions between basal epithelial cells, which limits the amount of drug that can be absorbed after topical instillation. In addition, nasolacrimal drainage reduces the precorneal residence time significantly.

The aim of the study was to develop and evaluate the efficacy of a functionalized layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled film entrapped with oxaliplatin (OX) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) siRNA in the localized treatment of colon cancer. The LbL film was prepared by the sequential layering of chitosan (CS) and alginate to attain desired physical and mechanical properties. The film was functionalized by coating folic acid-conjugated CS on one side.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is often associated with an inflammatory setting. A plethora of cytokines are secreted in this milieu, actively contributing to the progression of the disease; however, the extent of cytokine interaction and how it contributes to HCC development remains an enigma. In this regard, our analysis of available patient-derived data suggests that cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) are enriched in HCC.

A Ce/Ti-based bimetallic 2-aminoterephthalate metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized and evaluated for photocatalytic reduction of CO in comparison with an isoreticular pristine monometallic Ce-terephthalate MOF. Owing to highly selective CO adsorption capability, optimized band gaps, higher flux of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and a lower rate of recombination, this material exhibited better photocatalytic reduction of CO and lower hydrogen evolution compared to Ce-terephthalate. Thorough probing of the surface and electronic structure inferred that the reducibility of Ce to Ce was due to the introduction of an amine functional group into the linker, and low-lying Ti(3) orbitals in Ce/Ti-2-aminoterephthalate facilitated the photoreduction reaction.

Accumulation of misfolded proteins is a common phenomenon of several neurodegenerative diseases. The misfolding of proteins due to abnormal polyglutamine (PolyQ) expansions are linked to the development of PolyQ diseases including Huntington's disease (HD). Though the genetic basis of PolyQ repeats in HD remains prominent, the primary molecular basis mediated by PolyQ toxicity remains elusive.

In the present study, a proficient way for targeted bioimaging of folate receptor (FR)-positive cancer cells using free folic acid (FA)- and MoS QD-based nanoprobes is discussed along with its advantages over the preparation of orthodox direct FA-nanoprobe bioconjugates for the imaging. The water-soluble MoS QDs of size 4-5 nm with cysteine functionalization are synthesized by a simplistic bottom-up hydrothermal method. The as-prepared MoS QDs exhibit the blue emission with the highest emission intensity at 444 nm upon excitation of 370 nm.

The delivery of therapeutics to the posterior segment of the eye is achieved by invasive procedures, including intravitreal injections and implants. The topically applied formulations would not permeate through different tissue barriers of the eye to reach the posterior segment. Here, we demonstrate the effectiveness of microneedle scleral patch in delivering the model molecule, triamcinolone acetonide, to the posterior segment of the eye.
