The effectiveness of communication groups in day nurseries.

This project, run by a speech and language therapist and a clinical psychologist, took place in three inner city day nurseries. A group of children over whose communication there was concern were assessed on both formal (verbal and non-verbal) and informal (observational) measures. At each nursery these children were divided into two matched groups: intervention and control.

Antisuppressor mutations reduce misreading of the genetic code in Aspergillus nidulans.

Antisuppressor mutations were isolated in a strain containing the omnipotent suppressor suaC109. The antisuppressors reduce the activity of translational suppressors in vivo and counteract most aspects of the pleiotropic phenotype associated with the suaC and the suaA suppressor mutations. Using an homologous system for cell-free translation, we have measured translational accuracy in two antisuppressor strains with the genotype suaC109 and either the asuB11 or the asuD14 antisuppressor mutation.

A pyruvate-stimulated adenylate cyclase has a sequence related to the fes/fps oncogenes and to eukaryotic cyclases.

The pyruvate-stimulated adenylate cyclase from Brevibacterium liquefaciens produces up to 450 microM cyclic AMP in the culture medium when the bacterium is grown on glucose and alanine. In this paper we report the cloning, expression and sequencing of the gene for this enzyme. Residues were identified, within the C-terminal domain, which are conserved in adenylate and guanylate cyclase sequences from eukaryotes and in the adenylate cyclase of the prokaryote Rhizobium meliloti.

Epidemiological approaches to drug misuse in Britain.

Most surveys in Britain are carried out at local level, though some indicators are monitored at national level. An example of a successful multi-source and multiple method model used in local studies is described. The importance of integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches is stressed.

Quantitative trace element analysis of human nails with external beam PIXE.

External beam PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission) analysis with a proton beam of 2.4 MeV was used to study trace element concentrations in human nails. The suitability of PIXE analysis regarding nail samples without any pretreatment besides washing was investigated.
