Psychedelic substances such as psilocybin have recently gained attention for their potential therapeutic benefits in treating depression and other mental health problems. However, individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) have been excluded from most clinical trials due to concerns about manic switches or psychosis. This study aimed to systematically examine the effects of recreational psychedelic use in individuals with BD.

Article Synopsis
  • Older adults with bipolar disorder (OABD) face unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment, particularly in outpatient settings.
  • Mood episodes in OABD are similar in frequency and severity to those in younger adults, with depression being more common and mixed symptoms frequent.
  • Effective treatment may involve using lower doses of lithium over other medications, and clinicians should focus on managing medical comorbidities and reducing the number of medications prescribed.

Department of Neurology, Centre for Leading Medicine and Advanced Technologies of IHM, The First Affiliated Hospital of USTC, Division of Life Sciences and Medicine, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui 230001, China. Electronic address:

Background: Modifiable lifestyle factors are implicated as risk factors for neurological and psychiatric disorders, but whether these associations are causal remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate associations and ascertain causal relationships between modifiable lifestyle factors, neurological and psychiatric disorder risk, and brain structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers.

Methods: We analyzed data from over 50,000 UK Biobank participants with self-reported lifestyle factors, including alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, diet, sleep, electronic device use, and sexual factors.

Background: Little information is available on response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) from India.

Aim: This exploratory study aims to evaluate and compare the sociodemographic and clinical profiles, treatment outcomes of BD patients with depression and mania/mixed episode who received ECT and to evaluate the predictors of response to ECT.

Results: Data of 278 BD patients who received 325 ECT courses were extracted from the ECT register.

Objectives: To examine if the COVID-19 pandemic had a differential impact longitudinally over four years on psychological and functional impact in individuals with a pre-existing anxiety, bipolar or emotionally unstable personality Disorder (EUPD).

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 52 patients attending the Galway-Roscommon Mental Health Services with an International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 diagnosis of an anxiety disorder ( = 21), bipolar disorder ( = 18), or EUPD ( = 13) at four time points over a four-year period. Patients' impression of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was assessed in relation to anxiety and mood symptoms, social and occupational functioning and quality of life utilising psychometric instruments and Likert scale data, with qualitative data assessing participants' subjective experiences.

Relatives are increasingly recognized as important in the care of people with a serious mental health condition, such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Research indicates that in providing care, relatives use so-called treatment pressures, such as persuasion, interpersonal leverage, inducements, or threats, to promote the treatment compliance of their family member. This grounded theory study investigated why relatives use treatment pressures by analyzing the experiences of relatives of people with a serious mental health condition before, during, and after mental health crises of their family member.

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) presents with a wide range of symptoms that vary among relatives, casting doubt on categorical illness models. To address this uncertainty, we investigated the heritability and genetic relationships between categorical and dimensional models of BD in a family sample.

Methods: This retrospective study included participants (n = 397 Females, n = 329 Males, mean age 47 yr) in the Amish-Mennonite Bipolar Genetics (AMBiGen) study from North and South America that were assigned categorical mood disorder diagnoses ("narrow" or "broad") by structured psychiatric interview and completed the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), which assesses lifetime history of manic symptoms and associated impairment.

Background: Affective modulation of startle reflex (AMSR) is a widely used experimental tool for assessing emotional reactivity. Previous research has shown inconsistent findings of emotional reactivity in amplitude in bipolar patients (BP). This study examined emotional reactivity (ER) in euthymic BP compared to healthy controls using both subjective and objective measures.

Although scientific knowledge about bipolar disorder (BD) is readily available and accumulating, there is still a particular need to inform this inquiry with evidence generated in understudied cultures. This study was set up to fulfill this need, focusing on two objectives: ascertaining the levels of hypo(manic) and depressive symptoms (i.e.

Predicting Diagnostic Conversion From Major Depressive Disorder to Bipolar Disorder: An EHR Based Study From Colombia.

Bipolar Disord

December 2024

Center for Neurobehavioral Genetics, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Objectives: Most bipolar disorder (BD) patients initially present with depressive symptoms, resulting in a delayed diagnosis of BD and poor clinical outcomes. This study aims to identify features predictive of the conversion from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) to BD by leveraging electronic health record (EHR) data from the Clínica San Juan de Dios Manizales in Colombia.

Methods: We employed a multivariable Cox regression model to identify important predictors of conversion from MDD to BD.

Objective: Children of parents with severe mental illness are at increased risk of mental illness throughout their lifespan due to complex gene-environment interactions. Preventive interventions supporting parents and children are warranted. Objective: People living with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) in Kenya lack access to recovery-based services. In this study, we assessed changes in recovery in people living with SPMI in Kenya 6 months after receiving services at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Nawiri Recovery and Skills Centre (Nawiri).

Methods: A retrospective evaluation was conducted using a pretest/posttest design analyzing Nawiri care program data collected on admission and 6 months after discharge for recovery metrics.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β or GSK-3B) is a serine-threonine kinase involved in various pathways and cellular processes. Alteration in GSK-3β activity is associated with several neurological diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD), bipolar disorder, and rare diseases like Rett syndrome. GSK-3β is also implicated in HIV-associated dementia (HAD), as it is upregulated in HIV-1-infected cells and plays a role in neuronal dysfunction.

International Consortium for Mood & Psychotic Disorders Research, Mailman Research Center, McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA, United States; Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, United States; Lucio Bini Mood Disorders Centers, Cagliari, Rome, Italy.

There is growing interest in assessing affective temperaments in relation to major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Needed is evaluation of the impact of temperament ratings on responses to treatment of depression in these disorders. We measured treatment response as %-improvement in HDRS depression ratings and correlated this measure as well as response rate (≥50 % improvement) with TEMPS-A ratings of anxious, cyclothymic, dysthymic, hyperthymic, and irritable affective temperaments in 2264 mood-disorder patients (1165 BD, 1099 MDD; 62.
