Stud Mycol

December 2024

Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, College of Bioresources and Agriculture, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

Species classified in () include multiple entomopathogenic fungi. Numerous changes have recently occurred in the nomenclature of cordycipitaceous fungi due to the single naming system proposed for pleomorphic fungi in 2011. Species of are widely applied as herbal medicines, especially in Asian cultures.

A hydrogenotrophic methanoarchaeon, designated strain FWC-SCC4, was isolated from cold seep sediment of Four-Way Closure Ridge, offshore southwestern Taiwan. Strain FWC-SCC4utilizes H/CO or formate, but not acetate, secondary alcohols, methylamines, methanol or ethanol for growth and methane production. Yeast extract is required for growth.

Article Synopsis
  • - Levels of progesterone increase after ovulation and are vital for supporting pregnancy, but gut microbiota can influence these levels by affecting the hormone's recycling in the liver and gut.
  • - A specific gut bacterium plays a key role in metabolizing progesterone into a neurosteroid, which does not have progestogenic activity; researchers identified the enzyme responsible for this conversion.
  • - In experiments with female mice, certain antibiotics helped restore progesterone levels, and prolonged antibiotic use disrupted ovarian follicle development, suggesting a link between gut bacteria and progesterone resistance in women.

Establishing an Interactive Sequence Database for Shiitake Cultivar Identification.

J Basic Microbiol

November 2024

Department of Biomedical Science and Environment Biology, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan (ROC).

Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) hold significant cultural and economic value, particularly in Asia where they are extensively cultivated. The diversification of shiitake cultivars, driven by the need to adapt to various climatic conditions and cultivation methods, has resulted in over 200 distinct cultivars. Reliable identification of these cultivars is crucial for breeding, intellectual property protection, and effective genetic resource management.

Background: Intracavernous (IC) injections of stem cells has been shown to ameliorate cavernous nerve (CN)-induced erectile dysfunction (ED). However, the regenerative effects underlying the recovery of erectile function (EF) in human amniotic fluid-derived stem cells (hAFSCs) remain unclear. In the bilateral cavernous nerve crushing (BCNC) injury rat paradigm, we sought to ascertain the effects of hAFSC treatment on EF recovery during the incipient phase.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapies show potential to treat ischemic diseases owing to their versatile functions. However, sustaining MSC viability and therapeutic efficacy in ischemic tissues postengraftment remains a significant challenge. This is because, although MSCs are metabolically flexible, they fail to adapt to hypoxic conditions in the absence of glucose, leading to cell death.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative arthritis disease linked to aging, obesity, diet, and accumulation of octacalcium phosphate (OCP) crystals in joints. Current research has focused on inflammation and chondrocytes apoptosis as underlying OA mechanisms. Inflammatory cytokines like IL-1β activate matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) and aggrecanase (the member of A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin motifs family, ADAMTS), leading to cartilage matrix degradation.

Taiwan is situated in the subtropical region and its geographical location and topographical features contribute to a rich ecological diversity and scenic landscapes. We investigated the diversity of methanogens in different environments of Taiwan using a culture-dependent method. This report presents the characterization and taxonomy of six hydrogenotrophic methanogens obtained from cold seep sediments (strain FWC-SCC1 and FWC-SCC3), marine sediments (strain CWC-02 and YWC-01), estuarine sediments (strain Afa-1), and a hot spring well (strain Wushi-C6) in Taiwan.

Improving iPSC Differentiation Using a Nanodot Platform.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

July 2024

Center for Regenerative Medicine and Cellular Therapy, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, 300, Taiwan, ROC.

Differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) is an extremely complex process that has proven difficult to study. In this research, we utilized nanotopography to elucidate details regarding iPSC differentiation by developing a nanodot platform consisting of nanodot arrays of increasing diameter. Subjecting iPSCs cultured on the nanodot platform to a cardiomyocyte (CM) differentiation protocol revealed several significant gene expression profiles that were associated with poor differentiation.

Mycoheterotrophic plants (MHPs) rely on their mycorrhizal fungus for carbon and nutrient supply, thus a shift in mycobionts may play a crucial role in speciation. This study aims to explore the mycorrhizal diversity of two closely related and sympatric fully MHPs, Monotropastrum humile var. humile (Mhh) and M.

sp. nov., isolated from human faeces.

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol

June 2024

Bioresource Collection and Research Center, Food Industry Research and Development Institute, 331 Shih-Pin Rd, Hsinchu 30062, Taiwan, ROC.

Two Gram-stain-negative, straight rods, non-motile, asporogenous, catalase-negative and obligately anaerobic butyrate-producing strains, HLW78 and CYL33, were isolated from faecal samples of two healthy Taiwanese adults. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA and DNA mismatch repair protein MutL () gene sequences revealed that these two novel strains belonged to the genus . On the basis of 16S rRNA and gene sequence similarities, the type strains AF52-21(98.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a persistent inflammatory disease, and long-term clinical treatment often leads to side effects. In this study, we evaluated pterostilbene (PT), a natural anti-inflammatory substance, for its protective effects and safety during prolonged use on OA. Results showed that PT alleviated the loss of chondrocytes and widened the narrow joint space in an octacalcium phosphate (OCP)-induced OA mouse model (n = 3).
