Toxic metal pollution influences the lives of diverse aquatic organisms and humans who consume contaminated aquatic products. However, its potential impacts on aquatic organism health and, thus, ecological health, have been neglected in many regions. This research was carried out to contribute to filling that knowledge gap.

Implantation of the blastocyst into the uterus is a specific and essential process for mammalian embryonic development. In mice, implantation is initiated from the mural trophectoderm of the blastocyst and the mTE controls implantation progression by acquiring the ability to attach and invade into the endometrium while differentiating into primary trophoblast giant cells. Nevertheless, it remains largely unclear when and how the mTE differentiates and acquires this ability during implantation.

Reactivation of fetal hemoglobin (HbF, 22) alleviates clinical symptoms in patients with -thalassemia and sickle cell disease, although the regulatory mechanisms of -globin expression have not yet been fully elucidated. Recent studies found that interfering with the expression of the membrane protein ANTXR1 gene upregulated -globin levels. However, the exact mechanism by which ANTXR1 regulates -globin levels remains unclear.

A 39-year-old man had an intracranial tumour without infiltration into the surrounding cerebral tissue. The tumour recurred seven times in 11 years but maintained a well-demarcated character. Histopathological examination of the 4th surgical specimens showed nests of tumour cells surrounding small blood vessels.

With a long coastline stretching from tropical to subtropical climate zones, and an immense exclusive economic zone with over 4000 islands, the Vietnamese marine waters support a rich and biodiverse parasite fauna. Although the first parasitological record was in 1898, systematic studies of the parasite fauna have increased during the last 50 years. This comprehensive review covers the current state of knowledge of marine fish parasites in Vietnam and lists 498 species found in 225 fish species, and their geographical distribution.

Anti-CD20 antibodies react with CD20 expressed not only on malignant B cells, but also on normal B cells. It has been reported that patients treated with anti-CD20 antibodies had an insufficient response to two-dose mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. To investigate the efficacy of a third dose in these patients, we investigated serum IgG antibody titers for the S1 protein after a third vaccination in 22 patients treated with the anti-CD20 antibody who failed two-dose vaccination.

Reactivation of γ-globin expression is a promising therapeutic approach for β-hemoglobinopathies. Here, we propose a novel Cas9/AAV6-mediated genome editing strategy for the treatment of β-thalassemia: Natural HPFH mutations -113A > G, -114C > T, -117G>A, -175T > C, -195C > G, and -198T > C were introduced by homologous recombination following disruption of BCL11A binding sites in promoters. Precise on-target editing and significantly increased γ-globin expression during erythroid differentiation were observed in both HUDEP-2 cells and primary HSPCs from β-thalassemia major patients.

Ketone body β-hydroxybutyrate (βOHB) and fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) have been proposed to mediate systemic metabolic response to fasting. However, it remains elusive about the signaling elicited by ketone and FGF21 in the heart. Stimulation of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes with βOHB and FGF21 induced peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) and PGC1α expression along with the phosphorylation of LKB1 and AMPK.

Feedback projections from the secondary motor cortex (M2) to the primary motor and sensory cortices are essential for behavior selection and sensory perception. Intratelencephalic (IT) cells in layer 5 (L5) contribute feedback projections to diverse cortical areas. Here we show that L5 IT cells participating in feedback connections to layer 1 (L1) exhibit distinct projection patterns, genetic profiles, and electrophysiological properties relative to other L5 IT cells.

Although choledochojejunostomy is the standard technique for biliary reconstruction, there are various associated problems that need to be solved such as reflux cholangitis. Interposition with an artificial bile duct (ABD) to replace the resected bile duct maintains a physiological conduit for bile and may solve this problem. This study investigated the usefulness of an ABD made of gelatin hydrogel nonwoven fabric (GHNF).

Patients who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for hematological disease experience high mortality when infected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine in HSCT patients remain to be investigated. We prospectively evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer BioNTech) in 25 Japanese allogeneic HSCT patients in comparison with 19 healthy volunteers.

Naturally occurring point mutations in the promoter switch hemoglobin synthesis from defective adult beta-globin to fetal gamma-globin in sickle cell patients with hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) and ameliorate the clinical severity. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, we tiled the highly homologous proximal promoters using adenine and cytosine base editors that avoid the generation of large deletions and identified novel regulatory regions including a cluster at the -123 region. Base editing at -123 and -124 bp of promoter induced fetal hemoglobin (HbF) to a higher level than disruption of well-known BCL11A binding site in erythroblasts derived from human CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC).

Beta-hemoglobinopathies are caused by mutations in the β-globin gene. One strategy to cure this disease relies on re-activating the γ-globin expression. BCL11A is an important transcription factor that suppresses the γ-globin expression, which makes it one of the most promising therapeutic targets in β-hemoglobinopathies.

The nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related (NPR) gene family is well known to play a crucial role in transactivation of TGA transcription factors for salicylic acid (SA)-responsive genes, including pathogenesis-related protein 1 (PR1), during plants' immune response after pathogen attack in the model dicot Arabidopsis thaliana. However, little is known about NPR gene functions in monocots. We therefore explored the functions of NPRs in SA signaling in the model monocot Brachypodium distachyon.

We investigated the efficacy of BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine in patients with B-cell malignancies treated with anti-CD20 antibody. Although T-cell-mediated immune responses were detected even in patients receiving R-CHOP treatment, the S1 antibody titer following BNT162b2 vaccination remained only marginally increased for more than 3 years after the final dose of anti-CD20 antibody. We found no relationship between the percent of B-cells and S1 antibody titer.

Mammalian embryos are most commonly cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen; however, liquid nitrogen is not available in special environments, such as the International Space Station (ISS), and vitrified embryos must be stored at -80°C. Recently, the high osmolarity vitrification (HOV) method was developed to cryopreserve mouse 2-cell stage embryos at -80°C; however, the appropriate embryo is currently unknown. In this study, we compared the vitrification resistance of in vivo-derived, in vitro fertilization (IVF)-derived, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)-derived mouse 2-cell embryos against cryopreservation at -80°C.
