Purpose: CytoSorb® (CS) adsorbent is a hemoadsorption filter for extracorporeal blood purification often integrated into continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT). It is primarily used in critically ill patients with sepsis and related conditions, including cytokine storms and systemic inflammatory responses. Up to now, there is no evidence nor recommendation for the use of CS filters in sepsis (22).

Background: Platform trials are innovative clinical trials governed by a master protocol that allows for the evaluation of multiple investigational treatments that enter and leave the trial over time. Interest in platform trials has been steadily increasing over the last decade. Due to their highly adaptive nature, platform trials provide sufficient flexibility to customize important trial design aspects to the requirements of both the specific disease under investigation and the different stakeholders.

Background: In recent years, there has been a growing number of case reports documenting delayed seroma in patients with a history of breast surgery and reconstruction. The occurrence of these seromas has been associated with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection or SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. So far, there are few systematic analyses on postoperative complications in breast surgery since the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Background: Data regarding the effectiveness and safety of endoscopic lung volume reduction with valves (ELVR) in emphysema patients with a very low 6-min walk test (6MWT) are limited. Patients with severe emphysema and very low exercise capacity, as indicated by a 6MWT ≤140 m, are often excluded from clinical studies on ELVR, assuming limited therapeutic benefits and increased complication risk.

Objectives: To survey physicians' views on the risks and benefits of computed tomography (CT) in the management of septic patients and indications for and contraindications to contrast media use in searching for septic foci.
Methods: A web-based questionnaire was administered to physicians at a large European university medical center in January 2022. A total of 371 questionnaires met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed with physicians' work experience, workplace, and medical specialty as independent variables.

Purpose: A relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) is a characteristic clinical sign of optic neuritis (ON). Here, we systematically evaluated ultrasound pupillometry (UP) for the detection of an RAPD in patients with ON, including a comparison with infrared video pupillometry (IVP), the gold standard for objective pupillometry.
Materials And Methods: We enrolled 40 patients with acute (n = 9) or past (n = 31) ON (ON+), 31 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) without prior ON, and 50 healthy controls (HC) in a cross-sectional observational study.

Background: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) serves as a therapeutic intervention for various pediatric diseases. Acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) are decisive determinants for allogeneic HSCT success. The immunosuppressive agent, ciclosporin A, is most often used to prevent GVHD in pediatric patients, but is known to be nephrotoxic.

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of digital multidisciplinary conferences (MDCs) in preventing imaging-related quality management (QM) events during the coronavirus-disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. COVID-19 challenged interdisciplinary exchange and QM measures for patient safety. Regular MDCs between radiologists and intensive care unit (ICU) physicians, introduced in our hospital in 2018, enable re-evaluation of imaging examinations and bilateral feedback.

Background: Postoperative delirium (POD) is the most common neurological adverse event among elderly patients undergoing surgery. POD is associated with an increased risk for postoperative complications, long-term cognitive decline, an increase in morbidity and mortality as well as extended hospital stays. Delirium prevention and treatment options are currently limited.

Background: Deficits in cholinergic function are assumed to cause cognitive decline. Studies have demonstrated that changes in serum cholinesterase activities are associated with a higher incidence of delirium in critically ill patients. Additionally, basic research indicates that the cholinergic and circadian systems are interconnected, with each system influencing the functionality of the other.

Purpose: We developed the online-based counseling tool iKNOW for women with a pathogenic germline variant in to improve risk understanding and quality of life.
Methods: With a randomized controlled trial, we investigated the efficacy of iKNOW with regard to risk understanding (primary endpoint), quality of life, risk perception, and anxiety (secondary endpoints). Self-report questionnaires were administered to = 217 women with a pathogenic variant in before counseling (T0), immediately after (T1), 4 weeks after (T2), and 6 months after (T3).

Objective: Despite numerous studies addressing the impact of p16 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), consistent data regarding survival and tumor proliferation behavior are lacking. Although some authors investigate both p16 and Mib/Ki-67 in their cohorts, direct correlations are consistently missing. The aim of this study was to investigate the combined influence of p16 and Mib/Ki-67 status on prognosis in OSCC.

Unlabelled: Stroke frequently results in mobility impairments, contributing to an increased cardiovascular risk. Despite efforts to promote physical activity, stroke survivors fail to meet recommended levels. This secondary analysis of the 'Physical Fitness in Patients with Subacute Stroke' (Phys-Stroke) trial analyzes physical activity at 6 months post-stroke, and examines the effect of gains in walking capacity during the subacute phase on physical activity in the chronic stage.

Background And Objectives: Biologics that target pathogenic antibodies (Abs) and their effector functions such as the complement inhibitor ravulizumab and the neonatal Fc receptor agonist efgartigimod have recently been approved for the treatment of acetylcholine receptor (AChR)-Ab-positive myasthenia gravis (MG), but comparative studies are lacking.
Methods: In a prospective, exploratory real-world study, we assessed clinical efficacy, safety, and biological effects of ravulizumab and efgartigimod treatment initiation. Myasthenia Gravis-Activities of Daily Living and Quantitative Myasthenia Gravis scores were used as clinical endpoints.

In many life science experiments or medical studies, subjects are repeatedly observed and measurements are collected in factorial designs with multivariate data. The analysis of such multivariate data is typically based on multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) or mixed models, requiring complete data, and certain assumption on the underlying parametric distribution such as continuity or a specific covariance structure, for example, compound symmetry. However, these methods are usually not applicable when discrete data or even ordered categorical data are present.

Background & Aims: Recently, a beneficial effect of high intake of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) and protein on intrahepatic lipids (IHL) was demonstrated over 12 months within a randomized controlled trial (the NutriAct trial). We now aimed to explore the specific macronutrient components driving this IHL improvement within this trial in middle-aged and elderly subjects (50-80 y) at risk for age-related diseases.
Methods: The NutriAct trial (n = 502) analyzed the effect of a high-protein and high-UFA diet on age related diseases including fatty liver disease.
