Alkyl sulfones are found in numerous valuable organic molecules. Here, we describe a promising approach for the one-pot synthesis of alkyl sulfones under visible light. Aryl diazo salts were allowed to react with styrene derivatives and sodium metabisulfite in the presence of thiophenol as a hydrogen atom transfer reagent and rhodamine B as a photocatalyst to yield alkyl sulfones.

Echocardiography is the gold standard of diagnosis and evaluation of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a common condition among preterm infants that can cause hemodynamic abnormalities and increased mortality rates, but this technique requires a skilled specialist and is not always available. Meanwhile, chest X-ray (CXR) imaging is also known to exhibit signs of PDA and is a routine imaging modality in neonatal intensive care units. In this study, we aim to find and objectively define CXR image features that are associated with PDA by training and visually analyzing a deep learning model.

Department of Periodontology, Research Institute for Periodontal Regeneration, College of Dentistry, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea; Innovation Research and Support Center for Dental Science, Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Electronic address:

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a model to predict the autonomy preference (AP) and satisfaction after tooth extraction (STE) in patients with periodontal disease. Understanding of individual AP and STE is essential for improving patient satisfaction and promoting informed decision-making in periodontics.

Methods: A stacked ensemble machine learning model was used to predict patient AP and STE based on the results of a survey that included demographic information, oral health status, AP index, and STE.

Is a Training Program in Pediatric Abdominal Ultrasonography Necessary for Pediatricians?

Pediatr Gastroenterol Hepatol Nutr

November 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Jeonbuk National University Hospital, Jeonbuk National University Medical School, Jeonju, Korea.

Despite being an essential specialty, pediatrics in South Korea faces the threat of collapse. While the declining birth rate is an important contributor to the decrease in the pediatric population, a more critical issue lies in the dysfunctional healthcare system. Primary care pediatricians are troubled by the lack of patients, whereas tertiary care specialists are concerned about the shortage of doctors.

Immunoglobulin G4-related spinal pachymeningitis: A case report.

World J Clin Cases

November 2024

Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Jeonbuk National University Medical School, Jeonju 54907, South Korea.

Background: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a complex immune-mediated condition that causes fibrotic inflammation in several organs. A significant clinical feature of IgG4-RD is hypertrophic pachymeningitis, which manifests as inflammation of the dura mater in intracranial or spinal regions. Although IgG4-RD can affect multiple areas, the spine is a relatively rare site compared to the more frequent involvement of intracranial structures.

Factors related to acute kidney injury after AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy.

Acta Radiol

November 2024

Department of Radiology, College of Medicine, Jeonbuk National University, Jeonju, Republic of Korea.

Background: AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy is associated with a higher risk of acute kidney injury due to its potential for inducing mechanical harm and intravascular hemolysis. However, previous studies have focused on a single disease entity.

Purpose: To identify predictors associated with acute kidney injury after AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy across a range of disease entities.

The fast, and highly sensitive estimation of cardiac troponin T (cTnT) is crucial for the early identification of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The electrochemical immunoassay-based (EIB) sensors are highly promising for this purpose, as they offer precise measurements and can be directly assessed in intricate matrices, including blood. To increase sensitivity, EIB sensors use nanomaterials or amplification processes, which can be laborious to develop.

J Craniofac Surg

October 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry, Jeonbuk National University, Jeonju, Republic of Korea.

Odontogenic myxoma of the mandibular condyle is a rare tumor that requires complete surgical resection because of the tendency for recurrence. The right mandibular condyle was resected to remove the myxoma. The author performed immediate condylar reconstruction using a costochondral graft (CCG), and stable temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function and occlusion were achieved.

Article Synopsis
  • - Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is primarily a urinary tract issue in older males, and this study evaluated the anti-proliferative effects of two natural extracts, CR and Syzygium aromaticum (SA), on BPH symptoms in lab tests with cells and rats.
  • - Experimental results indicated that the combination of CR and SA extracts significantly reduced cell proliferation and various biomarkers related to BPH when tested on RWPE-1 cells and testosterone-induced BPH rats, showing promising effects compared to individual extracts.
  • - The study concludes that the CR and SA extracts may help alleviate BPH symptoms through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, supporting their potential as natural treatment options.
