A series of tunable CAAC-based ruthenium benzylidene complexes with increased lipophilicity derived from a ketone being a large-scale produced key substrate for a popular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-ibuprofen was obtained and tested in various olefin metathesis transformations. As a group, these catalysts exhibited higher activity than their known analogues containing a smaller and less lipophilic phenyl substituent on the α-carbon atom, but in individual reactions, the size of the -aryl moiety was revealed as a decisive factor. For example, in the cross-metathesis of methyl oleate with ethylene (ethenolysis)-a reaction with growing industrial potential-the best results were obtained when the -aryl contained an isopropyl or -butyl substituent in the position.

Extensive transformation of natural land cover into urbanized areas enhances accumulation of phenotypic differences between animals from urban and nonurban populations, but there is little information on whether these changes, especially in terms of animal behaviour and circadian rhythm, have a genetic basis. The aim of this study was to investigate genetic background of behavioural differences between four pairs of urban and nonurban populations of a common waterbird, the Eurasian coot . For this purpose, we quantified polymorphisms in personality-related candidate genes, previously reported to be associated with avian circadian rhythms and behavioural traits that may be crucial for urban life.

A set of ruthenium complexes bearing a CAAC or uNHC ligand and a dithiocatechol fragment have been obtained and characterized spectroscopically. The activity and -selectivity of the newly obtained catalysts were studied in selected model CM, self-CM, and RCM olefin metathesis reactions. Intriguingly, and in contrast to structurally related NHC-bearing catalysts and , the CAAC and uNHC analogues showed no or only very little activity in olefin metathesis.

In this work, we investigated the antitubercular properties of Ciprofloxacin derivatives conjugated with menthol and thymol moieties. For the sixteen derivatives, we established minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) using isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that were resistant or susceptible to other antibiotics. For the most potent compound 1-cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-7-{4-[6-((1R,2S,5R)-2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexyloxy)-6-oxohexyl]piperazin-1-yl}-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (6), we determined fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) values to confirm antibacterial susceptibility and synergistic effects with other reference drugs.

Boron has gained significant attention in medical research due to its B-10 isotope's high cross section for the reaction with thermal neutrons, generating ionizing particles that can eliminate cancer cells, propelling the development of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for cancer treatment. The compound 4-borono-L-phenylalanine (BPA) has exhibited potential in BNCT clinical trials. Enhancing BPA uptake in cells involves proposing L-amino acid preloading.

In this protocol, we describe highly (E)-selective alkyne semihydrogenation employing commercially available iridium complex and a bidentate phosphine ligand. We provide steps for (E)-stilbene synthesis, remaining formic acid neutralization, and determination of the (Z)/(E) ratio using gas chromatography analysis. We then detail (E)-stilbene purification using a short pad of silica and NMR analysis.

Results: We introduce pLM-BLAST, a tool inspired by BLAST, that detects distant homology by comparing single-sequence representations (embeddings) derived from a protein language model, ProtT5.

We investigate the interactions between C-reactive protein (CRP) and new CRP-binding peptide materials using experimental (biological and physicochemical) methods with the support of theoretical simulations (computational modeling analysis). Three specific CRP-binding peptides (P2, P3, and P9) derived from an M13 bacteriophage have been identified using phage-display technology. The binding efficiency of the peptides exposed on phages toward the CRP protein was demonstrated via biological methods.

Application of high-pressure conditions enables enantioselective Michael-type addition of dialkyl malonates to β-arylethenesulfonyl fluorides. The reaction is efficiently catalyzed with 5 mol % of tertiary amino-thiourea at 9 kbar. Chiral alkanesulfonyl fluorides are formed in yields of up to 96% and enantioselectivities of up to 92%.

The synthesis of transition metal oxide nanostructures, thanks to their high surface-to-volume ratio and the resulting large fraction of surface atoms with high catalytic activity, is of prime importance for the development of new sensors and catalytic materials. Here, we report an economical, time-efficient, and easily scalable method of fabricating nanowires composed of vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, and cobalt oxides by employing simultaneous block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly and selective sequestration of metal-organic acetylacetonate complexes within one of the BCP blocks. We discuss the mechanism and the primary factors that are responsible for the sequestration and conformal replication of the BCP template by the inorganic material that is obtained after the polymer template is removed.

Cyclic dipeptides with two intramolecular peptide bonds forming a six-membered 2,5-diketopiperazine ring are gaining significant attention due to their biological and chemical properties. Small changes in the local geometry of such molecules (from to ) can lead to significant structural differences. This work presents the results of a study of cyclo(l-Cys-d-Cys), a dipeptide comprising two cysteine molecules in opposite chiral configurations, with the functional groups situated at both sides of the diketopiperazine ring.

The Sicilian wolf remained isolated in Sicily from the end of the Pleistocene until its extermination in the 1930s-1960s. Given its long-term isolation on the island and distinctive morphology, the genetic origin of the Sicilian wolf remains debated. We sequenced four nuclear genomes and five mitogenomes from the seven existing museum specimens to investigate the Sicilian wolf ancestry, relationships with extant and extinct wolves and dogs, and diversity.

Lipid rafts are condensed regions of cell membranes rich in cholesterol and sphingomyelin, which constitute the target for anticholesterolemic drugs - statins. In this work, we use for the first time a combined grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD)/polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS)/Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) approach to show the statin effect on model lipid rafts and its components assembled in Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface. Two representatives of these drugs, fluvastatin (FLU) and cerivastatin (CER), of different hydrophobicity were chosen, while cholesterol (Chol) and sphingomyelin (SM), and their 1:1 mixture were selected to form condensed monolayers of lipid rafts.

Canonical amyloid fibrils are composed of covalently identical polypeptide chains. Here, we employ kinetic assays, atomic force microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, circular dichroism, and molecular dynamics simulations to study fibrillization patterns of two chimeric peptides, ACCE and ACCK, in which a potent amyloidogenic stretch derived from the N-terminal segment of the insulin A-chain (ACC) is coupled to octaglutamate or octalysine segments, respectively. While large electric charges prevent aggregation of either peptide at neutral pH, stoichiometric mixing of ACCE and ACCK triggers rapid self-assembly of two-component fibrils driven by favorable Coulombic interactions.
