Self-propagating polymorphism of amyloid fibrils is a distinct manifestation of non-equilibrium conditions under which protein aggregation typically occurs. Structural variants of fibrils can often be accessed through physicochemical perturbations of the de novo aggregation process. On the other hand, tiny changes in the amino acid sequence of the parent protein may also result in structurally distinguishable amyloid fibrils.

The cytotoxic effects of water-based ferrofluids composed of iron oxide nanoparticles, including magnetite (FeO) and maghemite (γ-FeO), ranging from 15 to 100 nm, were examined on various lung cancer cells including adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549), nonsmall lung squamous cell carcinoma (H1703), small cell lung cancer cells (DMS 114), and normal bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B). The cytotoxic effect was evaluated both with and without exposure to an alternating magnetic field (AMF). The studies revealed that neither AMF nor iron oxide nanoparticles when tested individually, produced cytotoxic effects on either cancerous or noncancerous cells.

In this study, we utilized enzyme-catalyzed proximity labeling with the engineered promiscuous biotin ligase Turbo-ID to identify the proxisome of the ROMK2 channel. This channel resides in various cellular membrane compartments of the cell including the plasma membrane, endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Within mitochondria, ROMK2 has been suggested as a pore-forming subunit of mitochondrial ATP-regulated potassium channel (mitoK).

In this study, we present a conformational landscape of 5000 AlphaFold2 models of the Histidine kinases, Adenyl cyclases, Methyl-accepting proteins and Phosphatases (HAMP) domain, a short helical bundle that transduces signals from sensors to effectors in two-component signaling proteins such as sensory histidine kinases and chemoreceptors. The landscape reveals the conformational variability of the HAMP domain, including rotations, shifts, displacements, and tilts of helices, many combinations of which have not been observed in experimental structures. HAMP domains belonging to a single family tend to occupy a defined region of the landscape, even when their sequence similarity is low, suggesting that individual HAMP families have evolved to operate in a specific conformational range.

This paper summarizes the field studies on marine microplastics (MPs) carried out in the autumn season in four various localisations within three ports chosen at the Mediterranean Sea near the French Riviera and the West Coast of Italy (within the Ligurian Sea). It considers the transport problem and the fate of the MPs introduced to the sea by analysing beach debris found on the shore after the stormy weather. Monitored ports included Saint-Tropez, Portoferraio and Porto Ercole, in which two different places were monitored.

Electrochemically active iron oxide nanotubes formed by anodization are of high interest as battery components in various battery systems due to their 1D geometry, offering high volume expansion tolerance and applications without the use of binders and conductive additives. This work takes a step forward toward understanding lithium-ion storage in 1D nanotubes through the analysis of differential capacity plots d( - )·d supported by Raman spectroscopy observations. The iron oxide nanotubes were synthesized by anodizing polycrystalline iron and subsequently modified by thermal treatment in order to control the degree of crystallinity and the ratio of hematite (FeO) to magnetite (FeO).

Adams and Collyer argue that contemporary multivariate (Gaussian) phylogenetic comparative methods are prone to favouring more complex models of evolution and sometimes rotation invariance can be an issue. Here we dissect the concept of rotation invariance and point out that, depending on the understanding, this can be an issue with any method that relies on numerical instead of analytical estimation approaches. We relate this to the ongoing discussion concerning phylogenetic principal component analysis.

Discovery of a halogen-bonded ternary cocrystal of 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene with pyrazine and triphenylphosphine sulfide has revealed a complex landscape of multicomponent phases, all achievable by mechanochemical interconversion. The observed solid-state reaction pathways were explained by periodic density-functional calculations and comprehensive intermolecular interaction analysis, supported by dissolution calorimetry measurements.

A series of tunable CAAC-based ruthenium benzylidene complexes with increased lipophilicity derived from a ketone being a large-scale produced key substrate for a popular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-ibuprofen was obtained and tested in various olefin metathesis transformations. As a group, these catalysts exhibited higher activity than their known analogues containing a smaller and less lipophilic phenyl substituent on the α-carbon atom, but in individual reactions, the size of the -aryl moiety was revealed as a decisive factor. For example, in the cross-metathesis of methyl oleate with ethylene (ethenolysis)-a reaction with growing industrial potential-the best results were obtained when the -aryl contained an isopropyl or -butyl substituent in the position.

Extensive transformation of natural land cover into urbanized areas enhances accumulation of phenotypic differences between animals from urban and nonurban populations, but there is little information on whether these changes, especially in terms of animal behaviour and circadian rhythm, have a genetic basis. The aim of this study was to investigate genetic background of behavioural differences between four pairs of urban and nonurban populations of a common waterbird, the Eurasian coot . For this purpose, we quantified polymorphisms in personality-related candidate genes, previously reported to be associated with avian circadian rhythms and behavioural traits that may be crucial for urban life.

A set of ruthenium complexes bearing a CAAC or uNHC ligand and a dithiocatechol fragment have been obtained and characterized spectroscopically. The activity and -selectivity of the newly obtained catalysts were studied in selected model CM, self-CM, and RCM olefin metathesis reactions. Intriguingly, and in contrast to structurally related NHC-bearing catalysts and , the CAAC and uNHC analogues showed no or only very little activity in olefin metathesis.

In this work, we investigated the antitubercular properties of Ciprofloxacin derivatives conjugated with menthol and thymol moieties. For the sixteen derivatives, we established minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) using isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that were resistant or susceptible to other antibiotics. For the most potent compound 1-cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-7-{4-[6-((1R,2S,5R)-2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexyloxy)-6-oxohexyl]piperazin-1-yl}-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid (6), we determined fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) values to confirm antibacterial susceptibility and synergistic effects with other reference drugs.

Boron has gained significant attention in medical research due to its B-10 isotope's high cross section for the reaction with thermal neutrons, generating ionizing particles that can eliminate cancer cells, propelling the development of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for cancer treatment.
