High-fat diet (HFD) consumption has been linked to dyslipidemia, low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress. This study investigated the effects of a mixed formulation with 139, 263 and 296 on cardiometabolic parameters, fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) contents and biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in colon and heart tissues of male rats fed an HFD. Male Wistar rats were grouped into control diet (CTL, n = 6), HFD (n = 6) and HFD with formulation (HFD-Lf, n = 6) groups.

The hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is toxic to the cells and associated with several diseases. Clinical studies have shown changes in plasma concentrations of Hcy after physical exercise. This study aimed to assess the effect of HHcy on testis, epididymis and sperm quality and to investigate whether voluntary exercise training protects this system against damage caused by HHcy in Swiss mice.

Metformin (Met) is widely used to control blood glucose levels and acts on various organs, including reproductive tissues, to improve reproductive and lifespan. This study evaluated whether neonatal Met exposure prevented male reproductive dysfunction caused by being overweight during adulthood. Randomized Wistar rat pups received an intraperitoneal injection from postnatal days (PNDs) 1 to 12of saline (Sal; 0.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential regulators of gene expression in metazoans and plants. In plants, most miRNAs are generated from primary miRNA transcripts (pri-miRNAs), which are processed by the Dicer-like 1 (DCL1) complex along with accessory proteins. Serrate-Associated Protein 1 (SEAP1), a conserved splicing-related protein, has been studied in human and yeast.

The aim of this study was to evaluate follicular development, morphological integrity, and antioxidant potential of preantral ovarian follicles from Bos taurus indicus females grown in vitro with alpha-lipoic acid. Ovaries (n = 24) of Bos taurus indicus (n = 12) females were collected during slaughter and fragmented. A randomly obtained fragment from each pair of ovaries was fixed in Bouin (non-cultivated control; D0).

Background: Obesity is considered a chronic inflammatory disease and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) might exert important roles in disease pathogenesis regulating adipocyte differentiation and immune-inflammatory environment. However, the role of this cytokine as a biomarker in obesity is poorly addressed. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the impact of TGFB1 polymorphisms and TGFβ1 plasmatic levels in obesity METHODS AND RESULTS: TGFB1 promoter region polymorphisms (rs1800468, G-800A and rs1800469, C-509 T) were evaluated in 75 obese patients and 45 eutrophic patients through PCR-RFLP and plasmatic TGFβ1 was quantified through ELISA from 37 of the obese patients, and correlations with clinical and biochemical parameters were tested.

Insulin deficiency or resistance can promote dementia and hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The formation of neurofibrillary tangles of p-TAU protein, extracellular Aβ plaques, and neuronal loss is related to the switching off insulin signaling in cognition brain areas. Metformin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic drug used worldwide for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Strains of Trypanosoma cruzi, etiological agent of Chagas disease, are classified into different discrete typing units that may present distinct dynamics of infection and susceptibility to benznidazole (BZ) treatment. Mice that were orally inoculated with T. cruzi IV strains exhibited a more intense course of infection compared with intraperitoneally inoculated mice, reflected by higher parasite loads.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the immune-inflammatory response system (IRS) have been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. However, no research examined the associations between BDNF and immune activation both before and after treatment in antipsychotic-naïve first episode psychosis (AN-FEP). This study aims to examine serum BDNF levels and their association with IRS and the compensatory immune-regulatory reflex system (CIRS) in AN-FEP before and after risperidone treatment.

The mechanistic interactions among redox status of leukocytes, muscle, and exercise in pain regulation are still poorly understood and limit targeted treatment. Exercise benefits are numerous, including the treatment of chronic pain. However, unaccustomed exercise may be reported as undesirable as it may contribute to pain.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neuroinflammatory and chronic Central Nervous System (CNS) disease that affects millions of people worldwide. The search for more promising drugs for the treatment of MS has led to studies on Sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 Inhibitor (PDE5I) that has been shown to possess neuroprotective effects in the Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS. We have previously shown that Sildenafil improves the clinical score of EAE mice modulation of apoptotic pathways, but other signaling pathways were not previously covered.

Hyperinsulinemia is frequently associated with aging and may cause insulin resistance in elderly. Since insulin secretion and clearance decline with age, hyperinsulinemia seems to be maintained, primarily, due to a decrease in the insulin clearance. To investigate these aging effects, 3- and 18-month-old male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to intraperitoneal glucose and insulin tolerance tests (ipGTT and ipITT) and, during the ipGTT, plasma c-peptide and insulin were measure to evaluate insulin clearance.

Plants employ sophisticated mechanisms to control developmental processes and to cope with environmental changes at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), two classes of endogenous noncoding RNAs, are key regulators of gene expression in plants. Recent studies have identified the interplay between miRNAs and lncRNAs as a novel regulatory layer of gene expression in plants.

Resistance exercise exerts beneficial effects on glycemic control, which could be mediated by exercise-induced humoral factors released in the bloodstream. Here, we used C57Bl/6 healthy mice, submitted to resistance exercise training for 10 weeks. Trained mice presented higher muscle weight and maximum voluntary carrying capacity, combined with reduced body weight gain and fat deposition.

Aging is characterized by a progressive loss of physiological function leading to increase in the vulnerability to death. This deterioration process occurs in all living organisms and is the primary risk factor for pathological conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular diseases. Most of the age-related diseases have been associated with impairment of action of an important hormone, namely insulin.

Tracking fish consumption could provide additional information on changes to fish stocks, one of the planet's main protein sources. We used data on seafood consumption in fishing villages in Brazil over time to test for changes in: species richness, diversity, and composition, fish size and trophic levels, consumption of endangered species, and functional diversity (namely, species with different behavioral and habitat preferences). Our results demonstrate the potential to include this additional data source to complement fisheries data, especially in data-poor countries.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential non-coding riboregulators of gene expression in plants and animals. In plants, miRNAs guide their effector protein named ARGONAUTE (AGO) to find target RNAs for gene silencing through target RNA cleavage or translational inhibition. miRNAs are derived from primary miRNA transcripts (pri-miRNAs), most of which are transcribed by the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II.
