Well-controlled intrauterine development is an essential condition for many aspects of normal adult physiology and health. This process is disrupted by poor maternal nutrition status during pregnancy. Indeed, physiological adaptations occur in the fetus to ensure nutrient supply to the most vital organs at the expense of the others, leading to irreversible consequences in tissue formation and differentiation.

Background: The HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor-2) Ile655Val (rs1136201) genetic polymorphism can alter the receptor structure and its auto-activation, which can modify the signal transduction and, consequently, the cell cycle regulation. For this reason, this polymorphism has been extensively investigated as a candidate marker for breast cancer (BC). In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the possible influence of HER2 Ile655Val in BC susceptibility and prognostic factors in a Brazilian population.

Purpose: Despite the documented dual role of TGFβ1 in breast cancer (BC) pathogenesis, the subtype-specific influences of its polymorphisms remain undocumented. The present study investigated the effects of the TGFB1 promoter region (rs1800468 or G-800A and rs1800469 or C-509T) and signal peptide (rs1800470 or C29T and rs1800471 or G74C) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their haplotype structures on the susceptibility and clinicopathological presentation of BC subtypes.
Methods: TGFB1 genotypes were assessed by PCR-RFLP and haplotype structures were inferred for 323 BC patients and 405 neoplasia-free women, and case-control analyses were performed by logistic regression adjusted by age.

Fermented milks are a source of bioactive peptides and may be considered as functional foods. Among these, sheep's milk fermented with kefir has not been widely studied and its most relevant properties need to be more thoroughly characterized. This research study is set out to investigate and evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of peptides from fermented sheep's milk in Brazil when produced by using kefir.

Breast cancer represents a complex and heterogeneous disease that comprises distinct disease conditions, histological features, and clinical outcome. Since many years, it has been demonstrated as an association between HER2 amplification and poor prognosis, because its overexpression is associated with an aggressive phenotype of breast tumor cells. A significant proportion of cases have developed resistance to the current therapies available.

Recent studies have demonstrated that some hormones are present in baleen powder from bowhead ( and North Atlantic right () whales. To test the potential generalizability of this technique for studies of stress and reproduction in large whales, we sought to determine whether all major classes of steroid and thyroid hormones are detectable in baleen, and whether these hormones are detectable in other mysticetes. Powdered baleen samples were recovered from single specimens of North Atlantic right, bowhead, blue ( [.

Preclinical and clinical evidence suggests pro-inflammatory cytokines might play an important role in the neurobiology of schizophrenia and stress-related psychiatric disorders. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a member of the IL-1 family of cytokines and it is widely expressed in brain regions involved in emotional regulation. Since IL-18 involvement in the neurobiology of mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, remains unknown, this work aimed at investigating the behavior of IL-18 null mice (KO) in different preclinical models: 1.

People living a subsistence lifestyle in the Arctic are highly exposed to persistent organic pollutants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Formerly Used Defense (FUD) sites are point sources of PCB pollution; the Arctic contains thousands of FUD sites, many co-located with indigenous villages. We investigated PCB profiles and biological effects in freshwater fish (Alaska blackfish [Dallia pectoralis] and ninespine stickleback [Pungitius pungitius]) living upstream and downstream of the Northeast Cape FUD site on St.

Pain reported by patients with head and neck cancer is characterized as persistent pain with mechanical allodynia. Pain management is inadequate for many patients, highlighting the need for improved therapies. We examined the hypothesis that the mixed endothelin ET and ET receptor antagonist, bosentan, reduces tumor-induced ongoing pain and evoked hypersensitivity in a rat model of facial cancer pain.

Puberty is an important period for the growth and maturation of the male reproductive system, and is also a critical window for endocrine or environmental interference. The physiological levels of circulating insulin and hyperglycemic control are important factors for a normal prostate growth. Hyperglycemia during puberty is reported to retard the growth of the prostate gland, with remarkable effects on the epithelial compartment.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze feasibility (in vitro and in vivo) the use of hyperthermia produced by gold rods irradiated with ultrasound and their combination with chemotherapy with doxorubicin.
Materials And Methods: initially was determined the cell viability and Hsp70 levels after treatment by gold rods irradiated with ultrasound (GR+U) in cell culture. The pretreatment with GR+U combined with doxorubicin (DOX) was evaluated from IC, caspase-3 expression and mechanisms of cell death by electron microscopy.

Hyperthermia, the procedure of raising the temperature of a part of or the whole body above normal for a defined period of time, is applied alone or as an adjunctive with various established cancer treatment modalities such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In this study used a method for inducing hyperthermia in solid tumors with a combination of gold macro rod (GR) and ultrasound, the feasibility of this technique was described only with computational models and in vitro. The Ehrlich tumor, derived from a mouse adenocarcinoma, has been used to investigate the bio-heat transfer and the effect of gold rods irradiated with ultrasound.

Behavioral and neuroendocrine responses following threatening situations promote the release of corticosterone, which is known to modulate trauma-related learning and memory process. However, it remains unknown whether the aversive learning generated by interoceptive fear conditioning is affected by glucocorticoid modulation. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the role of dexamethasone suppression in encoding and expression of pentylenetetrazole-induced olfactory fear conditioning (OFC) and in contextual second-order conditioning promoted by the conditioned odor.

Determining antinociceptive interaction between Phα1β toxin (a voltage gated calcium channel blocker) and SB366791 (selective TRPV1 antagonist) may have both clinical and mechanistic implications for the pain management. This data in brief article is associated to the research paper "Synergistic antinociceptive effect of a calcium channel blocker and a TRPV1 blocker in an acute pain model in mice". This material supports the isobolographic analysis performed with the above drugs and shows: data of the dose response curves of the agents given as single drug or combination regimens.
