A pattern of increasing species richness from the poles to the equator is frequently observed in many animal taxa. Ecological limits, determined by the abiotic conditions and biotic interactions within an environment, are one of the major factors influencing the geographical distribution of species diversity. Energy availability is often considered a crucial limiting factor, with temperature and productivity serving as empirical measures.

This paper describes a dataset of microbial communities from four different sponge species: (Schmidt, 1864), (Schmidt, 1862), Schmidt, 1862 and (Pallas, 1766). The examined sponges all belong to Demospongiae (Class); Keratosa (Subclass); Dictyoceratida (Order); Irciniidae (Family). Samples were collected by scuba diving at depths between 6-14 m from two sampling sites of rocky formations at the northern coast of Crete (Cretan Sea, eastern Mediterranean) and were subjected to metabarcoding for the V5-V6 region of the 16S rRNA gene.

Background: Spotting disease infects a variety of sea urchin species across many different marine locations. The disease is characterized by discrete lesions on the body surface composed of discolored necrotic tissue that cause the loss of all surface appendages within the lesioned area. A similar, but separate disease of sea urchins called bald sea urchin disease (BSUD) has overlapping symptoms with spotting disease, resulting in confusions in distinguishing the two diseases.

Background: Genomic Observatories (GOs) are sites of long-term scientific study that undertake regular assessments of the genomic biodiversity. The European Marine Omics Biodiversity Observation Network (EMO BON) is a network of GOs that conduct regular biological community samplings to generate environmental and metagenomic data of microbial communities from designated marine stations around Europe. The development of an effective workflow is essential for the analysis of the EMO BON metagenomic data in a timely and reproducible manner.

Omic BON is a thematic Biodiversity Observation Network under the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), focused on coordinating the observation of biomolecules in organisms and the environment. Our founding partners include representatives from national, regional, and global observing systems; standards organizations; and data and sample management infrastructures. By coordinating observing strategies, methods, and data flows, Omic BON will facilitate the co-creation of a global omics meta-observatory to generate actionable knowledge.

The cause of chronic liver diseases (CLD) remains undiagnosed in up to 30% of adult patients. Whole-Exome Sequencing (WES) can improve the diagnostic rate of genetic conditions, but it is not yet widely available, due to the costs and the difficulties in results interpretation. Targeted panel sequencing (TS) represents an alternative more focused diagnostic approach.

Background And Objectives: The use of probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics in poultry diets has attracted a lot of interest recently. In this context, the determination of probiotic characteristics was evaluated on several isolates obtained from Iranian poultry's gut.
Materials And Methods: Probiotic characteristics such as hemolysis activity, acid, bile, gastric juice tolerate, adhesion assay, cell surface properties (hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation and co-aggregation) and antibiotic susceptibility test were evaluated.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in children is characterized by a wide variety of expressions ranging from asymptomatic to, rarely, critical illness. The basis of this variability is not yet fully understood. The aim of this study was to identify clinical and genetic risk factors predisposing to disease susceptibility and progression in children.

Doxorubicin (Dox) is one of the most frequently prescribed anti-cancer drugs. However, treatment with Dox is limited due to cumulative cardiotoxicity. 3--β-d-Sophorosylkaempferol-7--{3--[2(E)-2,6-dimethyl-6-hydroxyocta-2,7-dienoyl]}-α-L-rhamnoside (F-A), kaempferol 3-sophoroside 7-rhamnoside (F-B), and hippophanone (F-C) were successfully obtained by purification and separation of seabuckthorn seed residue in our previous research.

For a long time, the genus has been known and considered among the most applicable genera in several fields. Recent taxonomical developments resulted in the identification of more species in -related genera, particularly in the order (earlier heterotypic synonym: ), with potential application for biotechnological and industrial purposes such as biofuels, bioactive agents, biopolymers, and enzymes. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the taxonomy, growth requirements and physiology, genomics, and metabolic pathways in the highly diverse bacterial order, , will facilitate a more robust designing and sustainable production of strain lines relevant to a circular economy.

Background: Progesterone receptor (PGR) is a master regulator of uterine function through antagonistic and synergistic interplays with oestrogen receptors. PGR action is primarily mediated by activation functions AF1 and AF2, but their physiological significance is unknown.
Results: We report the first study of AF1 function in mice.

Inter-patient and intra-tumour heterogeneity (ITH) have prompted the need for a more personalised approach to cancer therapy. Although patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models can generate drug response specific to patients, they are not sustainable in terms of cost and time and have limited scalability. Tumour Organ-on-Chip (OoC) models are alternatives that can recapitulate some aspects of the 3D tumour microenvironment and can be scaled up for drug screening.

Routine health monitoring is an integral part of managing SPF rodent colonies. In recent years, rack-level environmental sampling has been introduced as an adjunct method or replacement for exposure of sentinel rodents to soiled bedding. However, rack-level environmental monitoring is not compatible with rodent housing systems that have cage-level filtration.

Kidney transplant injury processes are associated with molecular changes in kidney tissue, primarily related to immune cell activation and infiltration. How these processes are reflected in the circulating immune cells, whose activation is targeted by strong immunosuppressants, is poorly understood. To study this, we analyzed the molecular alterations in 384 peripheral blood samples from four European transplant centers, taken at the time of a kidney allograft biopsy, selected for their phenotype, using RNA-sequencing.

The similarities between sporadic basal-like breast cancer (BLBC) and BRCA1-mutated breast tumours raise the possibility that deregulation of the same pathway may underlie these tumour types. The aim of this study was to determine if PTEN aberrations are characteristic of both BRCA1 tumours and sporadic TN breast carcinomas with low BRCA1 expression, and can thus be used to identify sporadic tumours potentially sensitive to PARP inhibitors. Twelve BRCA1 tumours, 19 non-BRCA familial breast tumours and 71 unselected TN breast carcinomas were screened for PTEN mutations and assessed for PTEN expression and BRCA1 mRNA expression.

The dairy industry generates excessive amounts of waste and by-products while it gives a wide range of dairy products. Alternative biotechnological uses of these wastes need to be determined to aerobic and anaerobic treatment systems due to their high chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels and rich nutrient (lactose, protein and fat) contents. This work presents a critical review on the fermentation-engineering aspects based on defining the effective use of dairy effluents in the production of various microbial products such as biofuel, enzyme, organic acid, polymer, biomass production, etc.
