Bioinspired shape-morphing soft magnetic actuators have potential applications in medicine, robotics, and engineering due to their soft body, untethered control, and infinite degrees of freedom. The shape programming of the soft magnetic actuators (consisting of soft ferromagnetic CI particles in a soft matrix) is an involved task, as it requires a moulding process severely limiting the capability to program complex shapes. The current study explores a shape programming technique that architects the particle pattern configuration in the actuator, mimicking the pattern found in the mould-programmed actuator, thereby eliminating the need for a mould and providing a greater capability of programming complex shapes.

Flying insects have developed two distinct adaptive strategies to minimize wing damage during collisions. One strategy includes an elastic joint at the leading edge, which is evident in wasps and beetles, while another strategy features an adaptive and deformable leading edge, as seen in bumblebees and honeybees. The propulsive fins of ray-finned fish are used for large scale locomotion and fine maneuvering, yet also provide sensory feedback regarding hydrodynamic loading and the surrounding environment. The special hindleg structure and swimming setae of a water boatman give it a high degree of maneuverability, which plays an important role in swimming. This paper used a high-speed photography platform to extract key points from videos, obtaining the forward and turning movement patterns of the water boatman's hindlegs, as well as the transformation patterns of the setae. A Fourier series was used to establish the movement models of each hindleg joint, and a kinematic model of the hindlegs was established to study the continuous movement characteristics of the hindlegs.

For sustained swimming and flights, vertebrates and insects oscillate their propulsors periodically within a narrow range of Strouhal number (St), a dimensionless quantity describing the rate and density of the motion, suggesting a close relationship between the range and cruising optimality. The persistence of this range across size and fluids has puzzled biologists and engineers, resulting in multiple interpretations of its cause. Here, we propose that the optimal St range is largely constrained by power output efficiency of the trailing edge of the caudal fin.
