Desmoid tumor (DT) is a fibroblastic proliferation arising in soft tissue characterized by localized infiltrative growth with an inability to metastasize but with a tendency to recurrence. Nuchal-type fibromas are benign soft tissue lesions that are usually developed in the posterior neck. The development of these neoplasms can be associated with a hereditary cancer predisposition syndrome, mainly familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) syndrome caused by germline mutations.

Background: The European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology (ESTRO) Advisory Committee for Radiation Oncology Practice (ACROP) panel on prostate bed delineation reflected on macroscopic local recurrences in patients referred for postoperative radiotherapy (PORT), a challenging situation without standardized approach, and decided to propose a consensus recommendation on target volume selection and definition.

Methods: An ESTRO ACROP contouring consensus panel consisting of 12 radiation oncologists and one radiologist, all with subspecialty expertise in prostate cancer, was established. Participants were asked to delineate the prostate bed clinical target volumes (CTVs) in two separate clinically relevant scenarios: a local recurrence at the seminal vesicle bed and one apically at the level of the anastomosis.

Intratumoral co-injection of NK cells and NKG2A-neutralizing monoclonal antibodies.

EMBO Mol Med

November 2023

Program for Immunology and Immunotherapy, CIMA, Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona, Spain.

NK-cell reactivity against cancer is conceivably suppressed in the tumor microenvironment by the interaction of the inhibitory receptor NKG2A with the non-classical MHC-I molecules HLA-E in humans or Qa-1 in mice. We found that intratumoral delivery of NK cells attains significant therapeutic effects only if co-injected with anti-NKG2A and anti-Qa-1 blocking monoclonal antibodies against solid mouse tumor models. Such therapeutic activity was contingent on endogenous CD8 T cells and type-1 conventional dendritic cells (cDC1).

Sexual differences in locus coeruleus neurons and related behavior in C57BL/6J mice.

Biol Sex Differ

September 2023

Neuropsychopharmacology & Psychobiology Research Group, Department of Neuroscience, University of Cádiz, 11003, Cádiz, Spain.

Background: In addition to social and cultural factors, sex differences in the central nervous system have a critical influence on behavior, although the neurobiology underlying these differences remains unclear. Interestingly, the Locus Coeruleus (LC), a noradrenergic nucleus that exhibits sexual dimorphism, integrates signals that are related to diverse activities, including emotions, cognition and pain. Therefore, we set-out to evaluate sex differences in behaviors related to LC nucleus, and subsequently, to assess the sex differences in LC morphology and function.

An unprecedented global social and economic impact as well as a significant number of fatalities have been brought on by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), produced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Acute SARS-CoV-2 infection can, in certain situations, cause immunological abnormalities, leading to an anomalous innate and adaptive immune response. While most patients only experience mild symptoms and recover without the need for mechanical ventilation, a substantial percentage of those who are affected develop severe respiratory illness, which can be fatal.

CD300a is differentially expressed among B cell subsets, although its expression in immunoglobulin (Ig)M B cells is not well known. We identified a B cell subset expressing CD300a and high levels of IgM (IgMCD300a). The results showed that IgMCD300a B cells were CD10CD27CD25IgDCD21CD23CD38CD1c, suggesting that they are circulating marginal zone (MZ) IgM memory B cells.

Purpose: Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (i-IRI) involves a blood flow interruption in an intestinal segment followed by blood flow restoration. When blood flow is restored, oxidative and inflammatory molecules are distributed throughout the bloodstream, triggering both local and systemic damage. Our goal was to evaluate the potential of three antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory compounds (curcumin, dexmedetomidine and α-tocopherol) to prevent or reverse local and systemic damage induced by i-IRI.

The correct diagnosis of mesothelial proliferations is a classic problem for pathologists, and one which has important clinical implications. A significant number of such cases appear associated with recurrent hydrocele, as an irritative/reactive response to this condition. The morphological spectrum of mesothelial lesions in this topography is broad, and a set of benign conditions may appear, sometimes with florid gross features and cytologic pseudo-atypia.

December 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Instituto Universitario de Investigación Neuroquímica (IUIN), Complutense University, 28040, Madrid, Spain; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas (CIBERNED), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, 28029, Madrid, Spain; Instituto Ramón y Cajal de Investigación Sanitaria (IRYCIS), 28034, Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Cannabinoids affect brain function by engaging cannabinoid CB receptors (CBR), which play a role in various neuronal processes, particularly in the context of synaptic transmission related to epilepsy treatment.
  • The interaction between CBR and growth-associated protein GAP43 selectively inhibits CBR's signaling, specifically blocking its ability to activate the ROCK pathway without affecting traditional signaling routes, which could lead to impairments in cannabinoid therapeutic effects.
  • NMR studies indicate that GAP43 binds directly to the C-terminal of CBR, revealing a specific interaction that disrupts a signaling pathway responsible for neurite outgrowth, potentially impacting neuronal development and repair.

Xanthine oxidase inhibitors such as allopurinol and febuxostat have been the mainstay urate-lowering therapy (ULT) for treating hyperuricaemia in patients with gout. However, not all patients receiving oral ULT achieve the target serum urate level, in part because some patients cannot tolerate, or have actual or misconceived contraindications to, their use, mainly due to comorbidities. ULT dosage is also limited by formularies and clinical inertia.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) remain a cornerstone of the treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Numerous studies have emphasized the risk of damage accrual in SLE patient treated with GC, but currently, it is not possible to dissociate favorable and undesirable effects of GCs because their underlying mechanisms are entangled at the molecular level. Here, we review whether available data suggest that it is possible, feasible and desirable to taper and discontinue GC treatment in SLE.

Unlabelled: Signaling rewiring allows tumors to survive therapy. Here we show that the decrease of the master regulator microphthalmia transcription factor (MITF) in lethal prostate cancer unleashes eukaryotic initiation factor 3B (eIF3B)-dependent translation reprogramming of key mRNAs conferring resistance to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and promoting immune evasion. Mechanistically, MITF represses through direct promoter binding eIF3B, which in turn regulates the translation of specific mRNAs.
