The Inhibitor of IKK-β (nuclear factor kappa B kinase subunit beta), a specific modulator of NF-κB (nuclear factor-κB), is considered a valid target to discover new active compounds for various cancers and rheumatoid arthritis treatment. In this study a series of thirty 2-amino-3-cyano-4-alkyl-6-(2-hydroxyphenyl) pyridine derivatives was involved for a quantitative structure activity relationship model (QSAR) elaboration which allows the prediction of the pIC50 values of new designed compounds. The model can be used to predict the activity of new compounds within its applicability domain.

A new synthetic route was carried out via a one-pot reaction to prepare a novel series of amidine/amidinate cobalt complexes - by mixing ligand (6-pyridin-2-yl-[1,3,5]-triazine-2,4-diamine) with Co(II) in acetonitrile or benzonitrile. We observed that a change of solvent from methanol (used in complex , previously reported) to nitrile solvents (MeCN and PhCN) led to the incorporation of the amidine group, ultimately forming -. So far, this is a unique method reported to introduce amidine/amidinate groups into a pyridinyl-substituted diaminotriazine complex.

We recently developed a simple and robust microfluidic platform, DropMap, to measure simultaneously the kinetics of secretion and other cellular characteristics, including endocytosis activity, viability and expression of cell-surface markers, from tens of thousands of single immune cells. Single cells are compartmentalized in 50-pL droplets and analyzed using fluorescence microscopy combined with an immunoassay based on fluorescence relocation to paramagnetic nanoparticles aligned to form beadlines in a magnetic field.

Taphonomy is the study of decaying organisms over time and their process of fossilization. Taphonomy, originally a branch of palaeontology and anthropology, was developed to understand the ecology of a decomposition site, how site ecology changes upon the introduction of plant or animal remains and, in turn, how site ecology affects the decomposition of these materials. In recent years, these goals were incorporated by forensic science to understand the decomposition of human cadavers, to provide a basis on which to estimate postmortem and/or postburial interval, to assist in the determination of cause and circumstances of death, and to aid in the location of clandestine graves.

Bordetella pertussis, the causative agent of whopping cough, produces an adenylate cyclase toxin (CyaA) that plays a key role in the host colonization by targeting innate immune cells which express CD11b/CD18, the cellular receptor of CyaA. CyaA is also able to invade non-phagocytic cells, via a unique entry pathway consisting in a direct translocation of its catalytic domain across the cytoplasmic membrane of the cells. Within the cells, CyaA is activated by calmodulin to produce high levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and alter cellular physiology.

Cells can rapidly adapt to changing environments through nongenetic processes; however, the metabolic cost of such adaptation has never been considered. Here we demonstrate metabolic coupling in a remarkable, rapid adaptation process (1 in 1,000 cells adapt per hour) by simultaneously measuring metabolism and division of thousands of individual cells using a droplet microfluidic system: droplets containing single cells are immobilized in a two-dimensional (2D) array, with osmotically induced changes in droplet volume being used to measure cell metabolism, while simultaneously imaging the cells to measure division. Following a severe challenge, most cells, while not dividing, continue to metabolize, displaying a remarkably wide diversity of metabolic trajectories from which adaptation events can be anticipated.

Three undescribed Amarylidaceae alkaloids, named gigantelline, gigantellinine and gigancrinine, were isolated from Crinum jagus (syn. = Crinum giganteum) collected in Senegal, together with the already known sanguinine, cherylline, lycorine, crinine, flexinine and the isoquinolinone derivative hippadine. The investigation of clandestine laboratories poses serious hazards for first responders, emergency services, investigators and the surrounding public due to the risk of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in the manufacture of illicit substances. A novel gas sampling interface using open microfluidic channels that enables the extraction of VOCs out of the gas phase and into a liquid, where it can be analysed by conventional detection systems, has recently been developed. Diatoms are major primary producers in polar environments where they can actively grow under extremely variable conditions. Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is an aggressive form of urothelial bladder carcinoma (UBC) with poorer outcomes compared to the non-muscle invasive form (NMIBC). Higher recurrent rates and rapid progression after relapse in UBC is known to be linked with chronic inflammation. Background: Post-stroke spasticity contributes to impairments, disabilities and decline in quality of life. Quantitative measurements of spasticity are needed in order to assess the impact of specific treatments and to choose the more accurate technique for each patient. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the mechanical properties of capsular tissue using shear wave elastography (SWE) and a durometer under various tensile loads, and to explore the reliability and correlation of SWE and durometer measurements to evaluate whether SWE technology could be used to assess tissue changes during capsule tensile loading.
Methods: The inferior glenohumeral joint capsule was harvested from 10 fresh human cadaveric specimens. Tensile loading was applied to the capsular tissue using 1-, 3-, 5-, and 8-kg weights.
