Chemotherapy remains the standard treatment for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC); however, chemoresistance compromises its efficacy. The RNA-binding protein Hu antigen R (HuR) could be a potential therapeutic target to enhance the chemotherapy efficacy. The Wood-Ljungdahl Pathway is a unique biological mechanism of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide fixation proposed to operate through nickel-based organometallic intermediates. The most unusual steps in this metabolic cycle involve a complex of two distinct nickel-iron-sulfur proteins: CO dehydrogenase and acetyl-CoA synthase (CODH/ACS). Here, we describe the nickel-methyl and nickel-acetyl intermediates in ACS completing the characterization of all its proposed organometallic intermediates.

Retene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emitted mainly by biomass combustion, and despite its ubiquity in atmospheric particulate matter (PM), studies concerning its potential hazard to human health are still incipient. In this study, the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of retene were investigated in human HepG2 liver cells. Our data showed that retene had minimal effect on cell viability, but induced DNA strand breaks, micronuclei formation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

Photosynthetic productivity is limited by low energy conversion efficiency in naturally evolved photosynthetic organisms, via multiple mechanisms that are not fully understood. Here we show evidence that extends recent findings that cyanobacteria use "futile" cycles in the synthesis and degradation of carbon compounds to dissipate ATP. Reduction of the glycogen cycle or the sucrose cycle in the model cyanobacterium 6803 led to redirection of cellular energy toward faster growth under simulated outdoor light conditions in photobioreactors that was accompanied by higher energy charge [concentration ratio of ATP/(ATP + ADP)].

Electron-bifurcating flavoproteins catalyze the tightly coupled reduction of high- and low-potential acceptors using a median-potential electron donor, and are invariably complex systems with multiple redox-active centers in two or more subunits. Methods are described that permit, in favorable cases, the deconvolution of spectral changes associated with reduction of specific centers, making it possible to dissect the overall process of electron bifurcation into individual, discrete steps.

Maternal exposure to environmental contaminants during pregnancy poses a significant threat to a developing fetus, as these substances can easily cross the placenta and disrupt the neurodevelopment of offspring. Specifically, the hypothalamus is essential in the regulation of metabolism, notably during critical windows of development. An abnormal hormonal and inflammatory milieu during development can trigger persistent changes in the function of hypothalamic circuits, leading to long-lasting effects on the body's energy homeostasis and metabolism.

The study aimed to prospect native and analogous peptides with anti-SARS-CoV-2 potential derived from the trypsin inhibitor purified from tamarind seeds (TTIp). From the most stable theoretical model of TTIp (TTIp 56/287), cleavage was performed for the theoretical identification of native peptides and generation of analogous peptides.
