Gleason Score (GS) 3 + 4 prostate cancer (PCa) is heterogeneous in clinical course and molecular features. Risk stratification of indolent and aggressive PCa with GS 3 + 4 is critical, especially those with bone metastasis (BM) potential. Microarray-based microRNA(miRNA) profiling with eight PCa cases with or without BM was used to screen the candidate miRNAs associated with BM.

Neoadjuvant hormonal therapy (NHT) prior to radical prostatectomy (RP) is an approach that can potentially maximize survival outcomes in prostate cancer (PCa) patients with high-risk disease. Unfortunately, subsets of patients do not respond well to such hormonal therapy. We previously identified several pathological parameters in predicting differences in response to NHT of PCa.

Neoadjuvant Hormonal Therapy for Prostate Cancer: Morphologic Features and Predictive Parameters of Therapy Response.

Adv Anat Pathol

July 2022

The Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology, Ministry of Education and Department of Pathology, Shandong University QiLu Medical College, School of Basic Medical Sciences.

The primary goals of neoadjuvant hormonal therapy (NHT) in prostate cancer (PCa) are to reduce the size of the tumor, lower positive surgical margin rate, attempt to reach pathologic remission, and improve survival. Although NHT has not been recommended by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network as a primary treatment option for patients with localized PCa, NHT is increasingly used in clinical trials for locally advanced PCa. More importantly, with the development of novel androgen signaling inhibitors, such as abiraterone and enzalutamide, there has been renewed interests in revisiting the role of such treatment in the neoadjuvant setting.

RUVBL1 promotes enzalutamide resistance of prostate tumors through the PLXNA1-CRAF-MAPK pathway.

Oncogene

June 2022

The Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology, Ministry of Education and Department of Pathology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, 250012, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Enzalutamide improves survival for patients with metastatic prostate cancer, but resistance to the drug eventually develops, suggesting alternative pathways can promote cancer progression.
  • The study identifies RUVBL1 as a protein that increases in ENZR cells, promoting cancer cell survival by activating the MAPK pathway independent of androgen receptor signaling.
  • Blocking RUVBL1 with a drug could help reduce cancer cell growth and resensitize resistant tumors to enzalutamide, indicating RUVBL1 as a promising new target for treatment.

KIF15-Mediated Stabilization of AR and AR-V7 Contributes to Enzalutamide Resistance in Prostate Cancer.

Cancer Res

The Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology, Ministry of Education and Department of Pathology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China.

The new generation androgen receptor (AR) pathway inhibitor enzalutamide can prolong the survival of patients with metastatic prostate cancer. However, resistance to enzalutamide inevitably develops in these patients, and the underlying mechanisms of this resistance are not fully defined. Here we demonstrate that the kinesin family member 15 (KIF15) contributes to enzalutamide resistance by enhancing the AR signaling in prostate cancer cells.

leaf extract (VPLE) is used to mediate the green biosynthesis of Ag and NiO nanoparticles in aqueous solutions under mild conditions. The synthesized nanoparticles, with a narrow size range and good distribution, are characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. SEM and TEM micrographs proved formation of mostly spherical or ellipsoidal nanoparticles with little agglomeration, and the average particle size was less than 20-35 nm for both types of nanoparticle.

Intraductal carcinoma of the prostate (IDC-P) and bone metastasis have been both identified to associate with unfavorable clinical outcome of the prostate carcinoma (PCa). Our objective is to examine whether IDC-P or bone metastasis at diagnostic biopsies was associated with each other and whether they were linked with overall survival (OS) and cancer specific survival (CSS) of Grade Group 5 patients. We retrospectively selected the prostate biopsy specimens of 120 PCa patients with Grade Group 5 from Qilu Hospital of Shandong University between 2012 and 2016.

Differential response to neoadjuvant hormonal therapy in prostate cancer: Predictive morphological parameters and molecular markers.

Prostate

May 2019

The Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology, Ministry of Education and Department of Pathology, Shandong University, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Jinan, China.

Objectives: The predictive value of the histological parameters and molecular markers for neoadjuvant hormonal therapy (NHT) in prostate cancer (PCa) has not been well established. The aim of this study is to determine pathological variables that can predict differences in response to NHT in PCa.

Methods: A total of 85 locally high risk PCa patients with matched preoperative needle biopsies and radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens were included.

This study explored the effects of probucol on atherosclerotic plaques and soluble thrombomodulin in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Five hundred and eighty-three patients with CHD who were admitted to Jining First People's Hospital from February 2013 to February 2014. A total of 300 of them received conventional treatment, and were assigned to the control group, while the remaining 283 patients were treated with probucol in addition to the conventional treatment, and were assigned to the observation group.
