Tunable fabrication of concave microlens arrays by initiative cooling-based water droplet condensation.

Microlens arrays (MLAs), as one of the key features in the optoelectronics field, have attracted a lot of attention recently. Unfortunately, existing fabrication methods of MLAs have many disadvantages, such as complex fabrication procedures and difficult morphology control. This paper presents a low-cost and tunable fabrication approach for concave MLAs on ultraviolet (UV) polymer surfaces.

Biomonitoring of Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) Activity among Smallholder Horticultural Farmers Occupationally Exposed to Mixtures of Pesticides in Tanzania.

Biomonitoring of pesticides exposure has currently become a matter of great public concern due to the potential health effects of pesticides. This study assessed levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition and associated health effects in uncontrolled smallholder farming systems in rural Tanzania. A cross-sectional study was conducted of 90 exposed farmers and 61 nonexposed controls from horticultural zones.

Reward, Relief and Habit Drinking: Initial Validation of a Brief Assessment Tool.

Aims: Alcohol use disorder is highly heterogeneous. One approach to understanding this heterogeneity is the identification of drinker subtypes. A candidate classification consists of reward and relief subtypes.

Real-space visualization of quantum phase transitions by network topology.

We demonstrate that with appropriate quantum correlation function, a real-space network model can be constructed to study the phase transitions in quantum systems. For a three-dimensional bosonic system, a single-particle density matrix is adopted to construct an adjacency matrix. We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate transition can be interpreted as a transition into a small-world network, which is accurately captured by a small-world coefficient.

Age differences in electrocortical reactivity to fearful faces following aversive conditioning in youth.

Although biases in the processing of affectively salient stimuli are thought to increase risk for psychopathology across the lifespan, questions remain regarding how these biases develop. The current study tested an aversive conditioning model for the development of children's sensitivity in detecting fearful faces at varying levels of emotional intensity and their facilitated attention to fearful faces assessed via the late positive potential (LPP) event-related potential component. Participants (N = 144, ages 7-11 years) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: an active training condition in which an 85-dB white noise burst was paired with fearful faces, an active control condition in which the white noise was presented randomly throughout the task, and a no-sound condition.

Pharmacotherapy of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Drug development and pharmacotherapy of rare pediatric diseases have significantly expanded over the last decade, in part due to incentives and financial support provided by governments, regulators, and nonprofit foundations. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is among the most common rare pediatric disorders, and clinical trials of therapeutic approaches have seen dramatic expansion. Pharmacotherapeutic standard of care has been limited to off-label prescription of high-dose, daily corticosteroids (prednisone, deflazacort).

Metal Hydroxide/Polymer Textiles for Decontamination of Toxic Organophosphates: An Extensive Study of Wettability, Catalytic Activity, and the Effects of Aggregation.

Electrospun nanofibers (NFs) incorporated with catalytically active components have gained significant interest in chemical protective clothing. This is because of the desirable properties of the NFs combined with decontamination capability of the active component. Here, a series of metal hydroxide catalysts Ti(OH), Zr(OH), and Ce(OH) were incorporated into three different polymer NF systems.

Training program for Research Educators of sequential course-based undergraduate research experiences.

Science education studies have shown that a sequence of course-based research experiences has many positive effects for undergraduates. To maximize those benefits, we created a training program for the instructors (aka Research Educators). The program guides them in how to move students early in their college years through the process of science such that students then can successfully apply their learning to conduct real research projects.

Introduction: Few studies investigated the combined patterns of individual assets (e.g., social competence, positive identity) and mental health symptoms (MHS) in adolescents.

Role of Research Educator in sequential course-based undergraduate research experience program.

In our First-Year Research Immersion (FRI) program, students take a sequence of three CUREs (course-based undergraduate research experiences). Each Research Educator (Research Assistant Professor, aka RE) oversees the day-to-day work of about 30 first-year and 25 second-year students in a dedicated research-training lab. Instead of the typical work-load division for faculty between their teaching responsibilities (typically lecture) and research programs, REs combine these two responsibilities into one endeavour that better engages and teaches beginning students intending to major in science or engineering.

Nucleus reuniens of the midline thalamus of a rat is specifically damaged after early postnatal alcohol exposure.

Individuals diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders often show behavioral impairments in executive functioning. Mechanistic studies have implicated coordination between the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus (through thalamic nucleus reuniens) as essential for such executive functions. This study is the first to report the long-term neuroanatomical alterations to the ventral midline thalamus after alcohol exposure on postnatal days 4-9 (a rodent model of binge drinking during the third-trimester of human pregnancy).

Stabilization of the cardiac sarcolemma by sarcospan rescues DMD-associated cardiomyopathy.

In the current preclinical study, we demonstrate the therapeutic potential of sarcospan (SSPN) overexpression to alleviate cardiomyopathy associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) utilizing dystrophin-deficient mdx mice with utrophin haploinsufficiency that more accurately represent the severe disease course of human DMD. SSPN interacts with dystrophin, the DMD disease gene product, and its autosomal paralog utrophin, which is upregulated in DMD as a partial compensatory mechanism. SSPN transgenic mice have enhanced abundance of fully glycosylated α-dystroglycan, which may further protect dystrophin-deficient cardiac membranes.

General anesthetic exposure in adolescent rats causes persistent maladaptations in cognitive and affective behaviors and neuroplasticity.

Accumulating evidence indicates that exposure to general anesthetics during infancy and childhood can cause persistent cognitive impairment, alterations in synaptic plasticity, and, to a lesser extent, increased incidence of behavioral disorders. Unfortunately, the developmental parameters of susceptibility to general anesthetics are not well understood. Adolescence is a critical developmental period wherein multiple late developing brain regions may also be vulnerable to enduring general anesthetic effects.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with dementia and the longitudinal costs of informal care in the Cache County population.

Introduction: Severity of dementia and neuropsychiatric symptoms contribute to increasing informal care costs. We examined which neuropsychiatric symptoms subdomains (NPS-SD) were associated with informal costs in a population-based sample.

Methods: Dementia progression and informal costs (2015 dollars) were estimated from the Cache County Dementia Progression Study.

Spatial dynamics of access to primary care for the medicaid population.

Primary care (PC) has always been underestimated and underinvested by the United States health system. Our goal was to investigate the effect of Medicaid expansion and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provisions on PC access in Broome County, NY, a county that includes both rural and urban areas, and can serve as a benchmark for other regions. We developed a spatial system dynamics model to capture different stages of PC access for the Medicaid population by using the health belief model constructs and simulate the effect of several hypothetical interventions on PC utilisation.

Metabolic Alterations in Postharvest Pear Fruit As Influenced by 1-Methylcyclopropene and Controlled Atmosphere Storage.

This study assessed the impact of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and controlled atmosphere (CA) on the metabolism of targeted amino acids, organic acids, and antioxidants in stored 'AC Harrow Crisp' pears and their relationships to storage disorders. Pears were treated with 0 or 300 nL L 1-MCP and stored at 0 °C under ambient air or CA. Spectrophotometric assays demonstrated that glutathione levels fluctuated with storage and were most preserved by 1-MCP under ambient air.

Accuracy of commercial electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) temperature control technology.

Objectives: For electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also commonly called e-cigarettes, coil temperature is a factor in the potential production of toxic chemical constituents. However, data are lacking regarding the temperatures that are achieved in the latest generation of these devices. Fourth-generation ENDS are capable of producing heating coil temperatures well above e-liquid boiling points, and allow the user to monitor and set the heating coil temperature during a puff.

Intimate partner violence moderates the association between oxytocin and reactivity to dyadic conflict among couples.

Emerging literature indicates individual and contextual differences impact response to oxytocin (OT). Intimate partner violence (IPV) is one chronic stressor that may moderate OT response. To test the hypothesis that IPV moderates the association between OT and reactivity to a dyadic conflict task, data from a larger randomized controlled study was collected from heterosexual couples (N = 60 individuals; 30 couples) at high risk for IPV due to substance misuse.

Public Recognition and Perceptions of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Previous research has indicated that the public's knowledge on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is poor. Public understanding and perception of OCD may be one contributor to this issue. Given that mental health literacy is an important first step for those to receive the appropriate care, we sought to understand more about the public's awareness and perceptions of OCD.

Toxic Organophosphate Hydrolysis Using Nanofiber-Templated UiO-66-NH Metal-Organic Framework Polycrystalline Cylinders.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), the UiO series in particular, have attracted much attention because of the high surface area and ability to capture and decontaminate chemical warfare agents. Much work has been done on incorporating these MOFs into or onto textile materials while retaining the desirable properties of the MOF. Many different techniques have been explored to achieve this.

Identification of a New Blend of Host Fruit Volatiles from Red Downy Hawthorn, Crataegus mollis, Attractive to Rhagoletis pomonella Flies from the Northeastern United States.

A new blend of volatiles was identified for the fruit of downy red hawthorn, Crataegus mollis, that is attractive to Rhagoletis pomonella flies infesting this host in the northeastern USA. The new blend was as attractive as the previously identified mixture but is more complex in the number of odorants (six in the old versus ten in the new) and differs significantly in the ratio of three volatiles, 3-methylbutan-1-ol, butyl hexanoate, and dihydro-β-ionone, that are common to both blends and exerted agonist or antagonist effects on behavior in a flight tunnel assay. However, behavioral results with the old and new northern hawthorn blends, as well as modified blends with substituted ratios of 3-methylbutan-1-ol, butyl hexanoate, dihydro-β-ionone, indicated that the 'agonist' or 'antagonist' effects of these volatiles depended on the ratio, or balance of compounds within the blend.

Use of FDA approved medications for Alzheimer's disease in mild dementia is associated with reduced informal costs of care.

We examined the use of these medications and their association with informal costs in persons with dementia.

Method: Two hundred eighty participants (53% female, 72% AD) from the longitudinal, population-based Dementia Progression Study in Cache County, Utah (USA) were followed up to ten years.

Smoking Urges During Treatment and Long-Term Cessation among Low-Income African Americans.

Objective: The urge to smoke is a predictor of smoking relapse. Little research has focused on the impact of acute urges during treatment among African Americans. This study examined the relationship between smoking urges and long-term abstinence among treatment seekers.
