Adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) exposure, which models heavy binge ethanol intake in adolescence, leads to a variety of deficits that persist into adulthood-including suppression of the cholinergic neuron phenotype within the basal forebrain. This is accompanied by a reduction in acetylcholine (ACh) tone in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Voluntary wheel running exercise (VEx) has been shown to rescue AIE-induced suppression of the cholinergic phenotype.

Minimum spanning trees and forests are powerful sparsification techniques that remove cycles from weighted graphs to minimize total edge weight while preserving node reachability, with applications in computer science, network science, and graph theory. Despite their utility and ubiquity, they have several limitations, including that they are only defined for undirected networks, they significantly alter dynamics on networks, and they do not generally preserve important network features such as shortest distances, shortest path distribution, and community structure. In contrast, distance backbones, which are subgraphs formed by all edges that obey a generalized triangle inequality, are well defined in directed and undirected graphs and preserve those and other important network features.

This article focuses on the 1952 visit to the Jingjiang Flood Diversion Project, the first large-scale water infrastructure built on the Yangzi river after the founding of the People's Republic of China, by a foreign delegation from the Asia-Pacific Peace Conference. Serving as a form of technology diplomacy, this trip advanced two main purposes for the newly established country - to build up closer ties with 'foreign friends' who advocated international peace in the context of the Korean War, and to demonstrate China's own technical capabilities and achievements as part of the national campaign of 'peaceful construction' of the early 1950s. I argue that vernacular technologies, which were grounded in indigenous knowledge and practices for water control in the mid-Yangzi region, were essential in shaping China's self-reliant modernization and China's public diplomacy, which targeted individuals without scientific or technical backgrounds.

The distance backbone of directed networks.

In weighted graphs the shortest path between two nodes is often reached through an indirect path, out of all possible connections, leading to structural redundancies which play key roles in the dynamics and evolution of complex networks. We have previously developed a parameter-free, algebraically-principled methodology to uncover such redundancy and reveal the distance backbone of weighted graphs, which has been shown to be important in transmission dynamics, inference of important paths, and quantifying the robustness of networks. However, the method was developed for undirected graphs.

Genetic regulatory networks (GRNs) regulate the flow of genetic information from the genome to expressed messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and thus are critical to controlling the phenotypic characteristics of cells. Numerous methods exist for profiling mRNA transcript levels and identifying protein-DNA binding interactions at the genome-wide scale. These enable researchers to determine the structure and output of transcriptional regulatory networks, but uncovering the complete structure and regulatory logic of GRNs remains a challenge.

Climate change may alter phenology within populations with cascading consequences for community interactions and on-going evolutionary processes. Here, we measured the response to climate warming in two sympatric, recently diverged (~170 years) populations of Rhagoletis pomonella flies specialized on different host fruits (hawthorn and apple) and their parasitoid wasp communities. We tested whether warmer temperatures affect dormancy regulation and its consequences for synchrony across trophic levels and temporal isolation between divergent populations.

Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) show clinically relevant phenotypic variability, despite sharing the same primary biochemical defect (dystrophin deficiency). Factors contributing to this clinical variability include allelic heterogeneity (specific DMD mutations), genetic modifiers (trans-acting genetic polymorphisms) and variations in clinical care. Recently, a series of genetic modifiers have been identified, mostly involving genes and/or proteins that regulate inflammation and fibrosis - processes increasingly recognized as being causally linked with physical disability.

The objective of this case report is to describe utilization of area under the curve (AUC)/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) vancomycin dosing with variable MIC results in a patient with methicillin-resistant (MRSA) purulent pericarditis. Dynamical Modularity in Automata Models of Biochemical Networks.

Given the large size and complexity of most biochemical regulation and signaling networks, there is a non-trivial relationship between the micro-level logic of component interactions and the observed macro-dynamics. Here we address this issue by formalizing the concept of pathway modules developed by [1], which are sequences of state updates that are guaranteed to occur (barring outside interference) in the causal dynamics of automata networks after the perturbation of a subset of driver nodes. We present a novel algorithm to automatically extract pathway modules from networks and characterize the interactions that may take place between the modules.
