Actinomycetes produce a variety of clinically indispensable molecules, such as antineoplastic anthracyclines. However, the actinomycetes are hindered in their further development as genetically engineered hosts for the synthesis of new anthracycline analogues due to their slow growth kinetics associated with their mycelial life cycle and the lack of a comprehensive genetic toolbox for combinatorial biosynthesis. In this report, we tackled both issues via the development of the BIOPOLYMER (BIOBricks POLYketide Metabolic EngineeRing) toolbox: a comprehensive synthetic biology toolbox consisting of engineered strains, promoters, vectors, and biosynthetic genes for the synthesis of anthracyclinones.

To describe the composition of an advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) readiness assessment plan (APPE-RAP) along with initial findings following retrospective application to a cohort of students. The APPE-RAP uses existing summative assessment data within the ExamSoft platform on six skills and 12 ability-based outcomes from the pre-APPE curriculum. Thresholds were created to sort students into three readiness categories for skills and knowledge, determine overall readiness, and identify need for curricular review.

Vineyards in the Southeastern New England American Viticultural Area were surveyed for the incidence of seven major viruses: grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaV-1, GLRaV-2, GLRaV-3, and GLRaV-4), grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), tomato ringspot virus (ToRSV), and tobacco ringspot virus (TRSV). Viruses were detected by DAS-ELISA and confirmed by RT-PCR and Sanger sequencing. Multiple viruses were present in 19 out of the 25 vineyards surveyed between 2018 and 2020.

Background: Early and accessible testing for influenza with point-of-care testing (POCT) can be a critical factor for deciding to begin antiviral treatment. More than 10,000 pharmacies across the USA offer Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-waived POCT for infectious diseases, such as influenza A/B. Knowledge of barriers and facilitators to large-scale POCT implementation may be useful in scaling POCT for influenza test-and-treat services (Flu POCT).

One big challenge for undergraduate research students is gaining independence in the laboratory. In this curricular project, undergraduate students transformed research protocols developed for experienced scientists into protocols understandable to someone new to a laboratory. This process enabled themselves and other students to more quickly learn and master new techniques and advance to independent projects.

Objective: Palatability of medication is an important factor for adherence, especially in pediatric populations that tend to use oral suspensions for antibiotic therapy. Our study is the first to evaluate the impact of taste on prescribing patterns of antibiotic suspensions. The objective was to determine if taste testing common antibiotic suspensions altered prescribing patterns of medical residents, through data extracted from the electronic health record.

Significance: Binocular summation is a sensitive metric of binocular integration. As such, characterization of the mechanisms underlying binocular summation is a key step in translating and applying this knowledge to abnormal binocular systems afflicted with strabismus and amblyopia.
Purpose: Computational models of binocular summation have advocated the operation of mechanisms sensitive to the interocular phase disparity of first-order carrier gratings.

Background: Antipseudomonal antibiotics are often used to treat community-acquired intra-abdominal infections (CA-IAIs) despite common causative pathogens being susceptible to more narrow-spectrum agents. The purpose of this study was to compare treatment-associated complications in adult patients treated for CA-IAI with antipseudomonal versus narrow-spectrum regimens.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients 18 years admitted for CA-IAI treated with antibiotics.
