Understanding the genomic basis of natural variation in plant pest resistance is an important goal in plant science, but it usually requires large and labor-intensive phenotyping experiments. Epistasis refers to changes in the effect on phenotype of a unit of genetic information, such as a single nucleotide polymorphism or a gene, dependent on the context of other genetic units. Such interactions are both biologically plausible and good candidates to explain observations which are not fully explained by an additive heritability model. Background: While gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction is commonly encountered among critically ill patients, a uniform prospectively validated scoring system is lacking. The present study aims to validate the recently developed Gastrointestinal Dysfunction Score (GIDS) in a multicenter, prospective cohort of consecutive adult patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU).
Methods: GUTPHOS is a prospective, multicenter, non-interventional cohort study in which at least 1400 consecutive adult patients (age ≥18 years) admitted to the ICU will be monitored daily for abdominal signs and symptoms of GI dysfunction.

The comparison of large-scale genome structures across distinct species offers valuable insights into the species' phylogeny, genome organization, and gene associations. In this chapter, we review the family-free genome comparison tool FFGC that, relying on built-in interfaces with a sequence comparison tool (either BLAST+ or DIAMOND) and with an ILP solver (either CPLEX or Gurobi), provides several methods for analyses that do not require prior classification of genes across the studied genomes. Taking annotated genome sequences as input, FFGC is a complete workflow for genome comparison allowing not only the computation of measures of similarity and dissimilarity but also the inference of gene families, simultaneously based on sequence similarities and large-scale genomic features.

The Gram-positive bacteria Streptomyces davaonensis and Streptomyces cinnabarinus have been the only organisms known to produce roseoflavin, a riboflavin (vitamin B) derived red antibiotic. Using a selective growth medium and a phenotypic screening, we were able to isolate a novel roseoflavin producer from a German soil sample. The isolation procedure was repeated twice, that is, the same strain could be isolated from the same location in Berlin 6 months and 12 months after its first isolation.
