Institut Curie, Stress and Cancer Laboratory, Equipe labélisée par la Ligue Nationale contre le Cancer, PSL Research University, 26, rue d'Ulm, F-75248, Paris, France.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem driven by myofibroblast accumulation, leading to interstitial fibrosis. Heterogeneity is a recently recognized characteristic in kidney fibroblasts in CKD, but the role of different populations is still unclear. Here, we characterize a proinflammatory fibroblast population (named CXCL-iFibro), which corresponds to an early state of myofibroblast differentiation in CKD.

January 2024

Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), Medical and Infectious Diseases Intensive Care Unit, Bichat Claude-Bernard Hospital, Paris Cité University, 46 Rue Henri Huchard, 75018 Paris, France.

Pneumonia is a common and severe illness that requires prompt and effective management. Advanced, rapid, and accurate tools are needed to diagnose patients with severe bacterial pneumonia, and to rapidly select appropriate antimicrobial therapy, which must be initiated within the first few hours of care. Two multiplex molecular tests, Unyvero HPN and FilmArray Pneumonia+ Panel, have been developed using the multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) technique to rapidly identify pathogens and their main antibiotic resistance mechanisms from patient respiratory specimens.

Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B*15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B*15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the US (191 asymptomatic vs.

Article Synopsis
  • The review compares three different surgical approaches (transvesical, extravesical, endoscopic) for managing the bladder cuff during radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) to determine their efficacy.
  • A total of 19 studies involving 6,581 patients were analyzed, revealing that rates of bladder recurrence, metastasis, and cancer-related deaths were not significantly different among the approaches.
  • The study concludes that there is no high-level evidence favoring one technique over the others, indicating that the extravesical approach is as effective as the transvesical approach regarding oncological and perioperative outcomes.

Cellular crosstalk in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is still largely uncharacterized, while it plays an essential role in shaping immunosuppression or anti-tumor response. Large-scale analyses are needed to better decipher cell-cell communication in cancer. In this work, we used original and publicly available single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) data to characterize in-depth the communication networks in human clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC).

Adjuvant bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) instillations represent a cornerstone in the treatment of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Instillation schedule and dose modifications have been evaluated in efforts to reduce the incidence of adverse events (AEs), but none so far has the same treatment efficacy as the full-dose recommended schedule. It has been shown that prophylactic quinolone use in conjunction with BCG instillations reduces AE incidence and improves timely completion of instillation regimens and patient survival.

Eur Heart J

December 2023

Medical Intensive Care Unit, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris Cedex 13, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) is important for diagnosing fulminant myocarditis in adults, but its timing and effects on patient outcomes are still being studied.
  • In a study involving 419 patients across 36 centers, those who had an early EMB (within 2 days of ICU admission) showed significantly better survival rates (63%) without needing heart transplants or LVAD compared to those with delayed EMB (40%).
  • The research suggests that early EMB is associated with lower mortality rates and better overall outcomes, supporting its prompt use in ICU patients suspected of having fulminant myocarditis.
