Background: The increasing trend of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in becoming the third leading cause of deaths by 2020 is of great concern, globally as well as in India. Dysregulation of protease/anti-protease balance in COPD has been reported to cause tissue destruction, inflammation and airway remodelling; which are peculiar characteristics of COPD. Therefore, it is imperative to explore various serum proteases involved in COPD pathogenesis, as candidate biomarkers.

  • Periapical lesions often occur in teeth treated with root canals, causing complications that necessitate both radiographic and histological evaluations for accurate diagnosis.
  • This study aimed to analyze the histology of persistent periapical lesions linked to root canal treatments and explore correlations between the histological findings and the size of the lesions on radiographs.
  • Findings revealed that a significant majority (68.33%) of the lesions were granulomas, followed by cysts (23.33%), while abscesses (5%) and scar tissue (3.33%) were much less common.

Background: While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria.

Methods: In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation.

Clin Microbiol Infect

June 2021

Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, NCR Biotech Science Cluster, Faridabad, India; Department of Biotechnology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi, India. Electronic address:

Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of the 'TBDetect' kit-based bio-safe fluorescent microscopy filter (BioFM-Filter) microscopy in comparison with direct smear microscopy and culture for the detection of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in a multi-centric setting in India.

Methods: The TBDetect kit enables sputum concentration through filtration using the BioFM-Filter for improved and bio-safe smear microscopy. We evaluated the performance of the TBDetect kit in a six-site multi-centric validation study on sputum collected from 2086 presumptive TB patients.

Management of the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) remains challenging. The challenges are not only limited to its preventive strategies, but also extend to curative treatment, and are amplified during the management of critically ill patients with COVID-19. Older persons with comorbidities like diabetes mellitus, cardiac diseases, hepatic impairment, renal disorders and respiratory pathologies or immune impairing conditions are more vulnerable and have a higher mortality from COVID-19.

July 2020

Laboratory of Immunology and Infectious Disease Biology, Department of Biological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal, AB-3, Room No. 215, Bhopal By-pass Road, Bhauri, Bhopal, MP 462066, India; WPI Immunology, Frontier Research Centre, Osaka University, Osaka 5650871, Japan. Electronic address:

Precise regulation of innate immunity is crucial for development of appropriate host immunity against microbial infections and maintenance of immune homeostasis. MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs, post-transcriptional regulator of multiple genes, and act as a rheostat for protein expression. Here, we identified microRNA-30e-5p induced by hepatitis B virus and other viruses that act as a master regulator for innate immunity.

Article Synopsis
  • Injuries significantly impact global health, with the number of injury deaths rising from approximately 4.26 million in 1990 to about 4.48 million in 2017, despite a decline in age-standardized mortality rates.
  • The Global Burden of Disease study measured both fatal and non-fatal injuries through years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs), which were combined into disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
  • While overall injury incidence increased, age-standardized DALYs decreased, indicating a need for ongoing research focused on injury prevention, better data collection, and improving access to medical care in high-burden areas.

Burden of baseline resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to fluoroquinolones and second-line injectables in central India.

Trans R Soc Trop Med Hyg

April 2020

Central Tuberculosis Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi-110011, India.

Background: Drug-resistant TB is a serious public health problem in India. Pre-existing resistance to fluoroquinolones (FQs) and second-line injectable drugs (SLIDs) in strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) resistant to rifampicin (RIF) and/or isoniazid (INH) contributes to treatment failures and consequent transmission of drug-resistant TB. A baseline assessment of resistance of MTB to FQs and SLIDs may help guide policies to further improve management of drug-resistant TB in India.
