Nanopore Sequencing of Gene Polymorphisms and Their Association with Type 2 Diabetes.

ACS Omega

July 2023

Biochemical Sciences Division, CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune 411008, India.

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a transmembrane protein that interacts with its ligands, advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are elevated in diabetes and diabetic complications, leading to increased oxidative stress and activation of pro-inflammatory pathways facilitated by AGE-RAGE signaling. Polymorphisms in the gene can potentially affect AGE-RAGE interaction and its downstream signaling, which plays a crucial role in the progression of diabetes and its complications.

  • The Hanifin and Rajka criteria are the standard for diagnosing atopic dermatitis but are too detailed for regular clinical use.
  • A study of 52 pediatric patients in India found that certain symptoms, like xerosis and Dennie-Morgan fold, were more prevalent than in other Asian studies, while food intolerance was not reported.
  • The findings suggest that the Hanifin and Rajka criteria need adjustments for better diagnosis in the Indian population due to variations in symptom frequency and presentation.

Machine learning (ML), a subset of AI, goes a step further by recognizing patterns from data and teaches machines to automatically learn tasks. Although artificial intelligence in dermatology is mostly developed in melanoma and skin cancer diagnosis, advances in AI and ML have gone far ahead and found its application in ulcer assessment, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, onychomycosis, etc.
