Intraoperative palpation of sentinel lymph nodes can accurately predict axilla in early breast cancer.

Recent randomized trials have shown that completion axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is not required in all patients with a positive sentinel lymph node (SLN) who will receive radiation therapy. Although routine intraoperative pathologic assessment (IPA) becomes unnecessary and less indicated by breast surgeons in the United States and some European countries, it is still widely used all around the world. In this prospective study, the feasibility of intraoperative nodal palpation (INP) as opposed to IPA of the SLN has been analyzed.

Incidence of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Aged Below 18 Years during 2013-2015 in Northwest Turkey.

Objective: To assess the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in children under 18 years of age in the northwest region of Turkey during 2013-2015.

Methods: All newly diagnosed T1DM cases were recorded prospectively during 2013-2015. Total, as well as gender and age group specific (0-4, 5-9, 10-14 and 15-17 age) mean incidences per 100,000 per year were calculated.

Cytokine Polymorphism and HLA Genotyping in Patients with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Related to Hippocampal Sclerosis.

Objective: Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is the most common pathological substrate associated with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), where inflammatory processes are known to play an increasingly important role in the pathogenesis. To further investigate the role of the immune system, both cytokine gene polymorphisms and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotyping in patients with MTLE-HS were investigated.

Methods: The DNA samples of 100 patients with MTLE-HS and 201 healthy individuals were genotyped for cytokines (IL-6,IL-10, TNF-α, TGF-β1 and IFN-γ) and HLA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-SSP and SSO methods.

The comparison of general movements assessment and neurological examination during early infancy.

This prospective single-blinded study was performed to evaluate general movements (GMs) in group of high-risk, low-birth-weight and preterm infants and to compare results with neurologic examination. All infants' neurologic examinations, Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM) and Bayley-III Scale were performed at the corrected age of 12 months. A total of 22 infants were included.

The role of midkine in the inflammatory process and its correlation with other inflammatory markers in renal transplant recipients.

Background: Midkine (MK), which is expressed in the proximal tubular epithelial cells of the kidney, is thought to have a role in the pathophysiology of inflammation-related renal diseases. Both immunological and nonimmunological mechanisms may affect renal functions negatively during the early and late post-transplantation periods. We aimed in our study to evaluate the relationship of MK with clinical findings and inflammatory markers, including high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) in the pretransplant and post-transplant period.

The prognostic value of β-catenin and LEF-1 expression in patients with operable gastric carcinoma.

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value of β-catenin and LEF-1 expression in patients with operable gastric cancer that receive adjuvant treatment and the relationship between demographic and histopathological variables.

Material And Method: In this study, 82 gastric cancer patients treated with adjuvant treatment after surgery and followed in the Medical Oncology Department of Kocaeli University were included. β-catenin and LEF-1 expression were examined by immunuhistochemical analysis in paraffin embedded tumor tissues of the patients.

Bilateral humeral lengthening in achondroplasia with unilateral external fixators: is it safe and does it improve daily life?

A retrospective study was performed in 18 patients with achondroplasia, who underwent bilateral humeral lengthening between 2001 and 2013, using monorail external fixators. The mean age was ten years (six to 15) and the mean follow-up was 40 months (12 to 104). The mean disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) score fell from 32.

Duration of priapism is associated with increased corporal oxidative stress and antioxidant enzymes in a rat model.

Ischaemic priapism is characterised by hypoxia, hypercapnia and acidosis with resultant corporal fibrosis. Studies reported decreased erectile recovery after treatment of priapism longer than 36 h. However, a recent study revealed that half of patients with 3 days of priapism achieved recovery after T-shunt, although mechanism remains unclear.

Quality of life and satisfaction with treatment in subjects with type 2 diabetes: results from primary health care in Turkey.

The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life and degree of satisfaction with the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in primary health care in Turkey. A total of 180 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus from the Family Medicine out-patient clinic were included in the study. Participants were asked to fill out a self-report survey to collect data via two well validated scales, including the Turkish version of the Audit of Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL) instrument and the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (DTSQ).
