This study was aimed to identify the most frequently observed pathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infections from outpatient urinary isolates obtained across seven different geographical regions in Türkiye and to determine whether the antibiotic resistance rates of these pathogens differ significantly between these regions. The study included patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with uncomplicated urinary tract infections and had positive urine cultures from March 2021 to August 2022, across 37 different centers in Türkiye. The participating centers were selected based on their use of the disk diffusion method, in line with the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines, to ensure standardization of urine culture data.

Background And Aim: Diabetes has been shown in last decades to be associated with a significantly higher mortality among patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary PCI (PPCI). Therefore, the aim of current study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes on times delays, reperfusion and mortality in a contemporary STEMI population undergoing PPCI, including treatment during the COVID pandemic.

Methods And Results: The ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 is a large-scale retrospective multicenter registry involving PPCI centers from Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia and North-Africa, including patients treated from 1st of March until June 30, 2019 and 2020.

Background: Hypertension is the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor, with several detrimental effects on the cardiovascular system. Contrasting results have been reported so far on its prognostic role in patients admitted for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Therefore, we investigated the impact of hypertension on short-term mortality in a large multicenter contemporary registry of STEMI patients, including patients treated during COVID-19 pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prognostic factors for C3 glomerulopathy (C3G), focusing on the total chronicity score (TCS) derived from a new histological index (C3G-HI).
  • 74 patients from 20 medical centers were analyzed to determine factors affecting kidney health outcomes, with a particular emphasis on hemoglobin levels and their correlation with patient survival and kidney function.
  • Results indicated that low hemoglobin levels were linked to worse outcomes in C3G patients, and a TCS of 4 or higher correlated with significantly lower kidney survival rates over three years.

  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of non-mRNA vs. mRNA COVID-19 vaccines specifically for pregnant women and their newborns, using systematic reviews and meta-analysis methods.
  • After evaluating 4451 results, 16 studies were extensively reviewed, resulting in the analysis of 8 studies with 32,153 patients.
  • Findings showed non-mRNA vaccines had a higher incidence of fever but a lower incidence of fetal/neonatal death; however, the Jansen vaccine had higher rates of premature labor and miscarriages compared to the Pfizer vaccine.

Background And Aims: Increasing attention is being paid to the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in men and specifically reproduction. Growing evidence suggests an association between HPV infection with many adverse effects including the impairment of semen parameters, the increase of blastocyst apoptosis, the reduction of endometrial implantation of trophoblastic cells, as well as the increase rate of miscarriages and spontaneous preterm birth.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, CINHAL, PsycINFO, and ERIC from inception to 2nd of July 2024, for studies that investigated the association between HPV infection with sperm parameters and fertility outcomes.

Introduction: Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulator drugs target the underlying defect and improve CFTR function. They are a part of standard care in many countries, but not all patients are eligible for these drugs due to age and genotype. Here, we aimed to determine the characteristics of non-eligible patients for CFTR modulators in the CF registry of Turkey (CFRT) to highlight their clinical needs.

Cucurbitacins have high economic value as they are a major source of food and have pharmacological properties. Cucurbitacin I (CuI) is a plant-derived natural tetracyclic triterpenoid compound that shows an anticancer effect via inhibiting the JAK2-STAT3 signaling pathway. The actin cytoskeleton is the most abundant protein in cells and regulates critical events through reorganization in cells.

Article Synopsis
  • This research aimed to assess the impact of adding dry needling (DN) to conventional rehabilitation on pain, range of motion (ROM), and functionality for patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP).
  • A total of 38 patients were divided into two groups; one received standard rehabilitation while the other received the same treatment plus DN therapy over a series of sessions.
  • While both groups showed improvement post-treatment, only minor differences were found in ROM, and no clinically significant advancements were observed at the three-month follow-up, suggesting that DN may not add substantial benefits to traditional methods.

Purpose: Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (aRCR) is a commonly performed procedure and has been reported to be a successful treatment. Successful healing has traditionally been considered to be associated with good outcome; however, knowledge on predictive factors affecting final outcome other than tendon healing is limited. This study aims to investigate predictive factors influencing clinical outcome following aRCR in patients with successfully healed tears.

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity and aging negatively impact the immune response, which can lead to increased vulnerability and worse outcomes for elderly patients during infectious diseases like COVID-19.
  • The study involved elderly patients with obesity and nonobese controls to measure antibody responses to the CoronaVac vaccine and found that patients with obesity had significantly lower antibody levels.
  • Factors such as hypertension were identified as independent predictors of reduced antibody levels, indicating that elderly individuals with obesity may require focused attention post-vaccination to enhance immunity.

Background: Recently, an emphasis has been put on anatomical reduction of acromioclavicular (AC) joint both in vertical and hortizontal planes for management of AC joint injuries due to persisting horizontal instability. Therefore, an additional AC fixation in horizontal plane has been recommended. However, relation between horizontal AC joint instability and clinical outcomes is still controversial.

Background: Atypical hemolytic syndrome (aHUS) and C3 glomerulopathy (C3G) are complement-mediated rare diseases with excessive activation of the alternative pathway. Data to guide the evaluation of living-donor candidates for aHUS and C3G are very limited. The outcomes of living donors to recipients with aHUS and C3G (Complement disease-living donor group) were compared with a control group to improve our understanding of the clinical course and outcomes of living donation in this context.

Investigation of irisin's role in pubertal onset physiology in female rats.

Peptides

May 2023

Bezmialem Vakif University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey.

Objective: The timing of pubertal development is closely related to metabolic status and energy reserves. It is thought that irisin, which is involved in the regulation of energy metabolism and is shown to be present in the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, may play a role in this process. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effect of irisin administration on pubertal development and HPG axis in rats.
