Surgery for Stress Urinary Incontinence: Autologous Fascial Sling.

Urol Clin North Am

February 2019

Department of Surgery, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, 450 Clarkson Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11203, USA.

This article describes the operative technique of autologous fascial pubovaginal sling (AFPVS) surgery, examines the senior author's outcomes with AFPVS, compares these outcomes with those of other large studies and meta-analyses, and compares the safety and efficacy of AFPVS with those of the synthetic midurethral sling (SMUS). Recently, the SMUS has become the treatment of choice for most surgeons. The efficacy of the SMUS remains unchallenged and comparable with that of AFPVS, but SMUS are associated with more severe complications.

Pontine bleeding following drainage of subdural hematoma in craniospinal hypotension.

Radiol Case Rep

February 2018

Department of Radiology, Bezmialem Vakif University, Istanbul, Turkey, Adnan Menderes Bulvarı, Vatan Caddesi, 34093 Fatih/İstanbul, Turkey.

Craniospinal hypotension is the syndrome of orthostatic headache associated with low cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Imaging findings are usually explained by Monro-Kellie hypothesis stating that the craniospinal compartment is incompressible and any increase in volume of one of the craniospinal constituents (blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and parenchyma) must be compensated by a decrease in volume of another constituent or vice versa. We report a case of craniospinal hypotension in whom drainage of subdural hematoma upon clinical impairments resulted in pontine hemorrhage, supporting Monro-Kellie hypothesis.

It has been proven that specific isoforms of human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) are able to fine-tune physiological pathways connected to signal processing, and that decreased CAs expression negatively influences cognition, leading to mental retardation, Alzheimer's disease, and aging-related cognitive dysfunctions. For this reason, a small library of natural and synthetic nitrogen containing cyclic derivatives was assayed as activators of four human isoforms of carbonic anhydrase (hCA I, II, IV and VII). Most of the compounds activated hCA I, IV and VII in the micromolar range, with s ranging between 3.

Molecular Aspects of Circadian Pharmacology and Relevance for Cancer Chronotherapy.

Int J Mol Sci

October 2017

Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Istanbul University, TR-34116 Beyazit-Istanbul, Turkey.

The circadian timing system (CTS) controls various biological functions in mammals including xenobiotic metabolism and detoxification, immune functions, cell cycle events, apoptosis and angiogenesis. Although the importance of the CTS is well known in the pharmacology of drugs, it is less appreciated at the clinical level. Genome-wide studies highlighted that the majority of drug target genes are controlled by CTS.

Purpose: Mild neurocognitive disabilities are commonly observed in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Enlargement of the corpus callosum (CC) is one of the findings in NF-1, but the pathogenesis has not yet been clarified. In this study, we investigated whether diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) features of CC differed between children with NF-1 and healthy control subjects, and we tried to evaluate the association between the microstructural integrity of CC and neurocognitive disabilities, based on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) values.

Some studies have shown that severe fibrosis and anatomical anomalies are more common in men, and subsequently, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is more difficult in male than female patients. We aimed to evaluate the effect of gender in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, with regard to the conversion rate, the differences in histological inflammation severity, and anatomical difficulty. We reviewed retrospectively 915 patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the First Department of General Surgery at Vakif Gureba Training and Research Hospital.

Complex movement disorder is a relatively rare presentation of neurolupus. Antiphospholipid antibodies are associated with movement disorders likely via aberrant neuronal stimulation. Antiribosomal P antibodies have been previously associated with neuropsychiatric disorders but their correlation with movement disorder was not previously established.
