Response of miRNA to treatment with L. oil in multiple sclerosis.

Acta Neurobiol Exp (Wars)

January 2025

Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Türkiye.

MicroRNA‑regulated gene expression plays an important role in autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). This study investigated the expression patterns of microRNAs (miRNAs) in MS in brain tissues using an animal experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model treated with Hypericum perforatum (HP) oil. C57BL/6 J mice were divided into two groups: MS and control.

Background: Upfront 2-stent techniques are often used in bifurcation percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), but there is controversy about optimal strategy selection.

Methods: The authors examined the clinical and angiographic characteristics and long-term outcomes of 232 bifurcation PCIs that were performed using the double kissing (DK) crush or culotte technique in 216 patients between 2014 and 2023 using data from the Prospective Global Registry for the Study of Bifurcation Lesion Interventions (NCT05100992). The inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW) Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess long-term outcomes.

Theranostic agents hold great promise for personalized medicine by combining diagnostic and therapeutic functions. Herein, two novel multifunctional theranostic glyconanoprobes targeting breast cancer were engineered for synergistic dual chemo-gene therapy and triple chemo-gene-photothermal therapy. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were prepared and coated with a Dox-loaded glycopeptide polymer (P-Dox) to form UCNP@P-Dox for improving stability.

Hematological malignancies encompass a diverse array of subtypes, contributing to substantial heterogeneity that poses challenges in predicting clinical outcomes. Leveraging the capabilities of nuclear magnetic resonance holds substantial promise in the detection of serum biomarkers and individual metabolic alterations in patients. The study involved the analysis of the sera from patients with acute myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma to investigate the impacted metabolites and their associated pathways.

Coexistence of phenylketonuria and tyrosinemia type 3: challenges in the dietary management.

J Pediatr Endocrinol Metab

January 2025

Department of Rare Diseases, Institute of Graduate Studies in Health Sciences, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Objectives: Phenylketonuria (PKU) and tyrosinemia type 3 (HT3) are both rare autosomal recessive disorders of phenylalanine-tyrosine metabolism. PKU is caused by a deficiency in phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH), leading to elevated phenylalanine (Phe) and reduced tyrosine (Tyr) levels. HT3, the rarest form of tyrosinemia, is due to a deficiency in 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPD).

Status of IKZF1 Deletions in Diagnose and Relapsed Pediatric B-ALL Patients.

Biochem Genet

January 2025

Department of Genetics, Aziz Sancar Institute of Experimental Medicine, Istanbul University, Topkapı mh, Gureba Hastanesi Cd. No:69, 34093, Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey.

IKZF1 deletions (ΔIKZF1) are common in precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and are assumed to have a prognostic impact. We aimed to determine the prognostic implications of ΔIKZF1 and CRLF2 overexpression in pediatric B-ALL. Furthermore, we sought to compare the multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with standard multiplex ligand-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) methods to ascertain IKZF1 status in a clinical context.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that affects more than 10% of the population worldwide, accounting for more than 843 million (M) individuals. The prevalence of CKD (844 M patients) is higher than that of diabetes mellitus (422 M patients), cancer (42 M patients), and HIV (37 M patients), but people are often less aware of it. Global expert groups predict reductions in the nephrology workforce in the next decade, with a declining interest in nephrology careers.

Background: Radiologically Isolated Syndrome (RIS) characterized by abnormalities on MRI that do not manifest as clinical symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) but raise suspicion for MS. Considering that RIS often evolves into MS, various diagnostic criteria have been established, and each suggested biomarker warrants thorough consideration and discussion. In this study, metabolomic profiling of body fluids of patients who were being followed up with a pre-diagnosis of RIS or MS and had not yet received any treatment was conducted.

Background: Acute variceal bleeding (AVB), a life-threatening complication of liver cirrhosis, can be effectively treated by endoscopy, but there is a risk of early rebleeding after endoscopic variceal treatment (EVT). Thrombocytopenia is the most common hemostatic abnormality in liver cirrhosis. However, it is still unclear about whether thrombocytopenia increases the failure of EVT in cirrhotic patients with AVB.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to develop a self-report scale for the assessment of the competence of pre-hospital health professionals in responding to radiological incidents.

Methods: Based on the findings of a systematic review analyzing the literature, the instrument followed the processes of item generation, expert opinion, language control, pilot study, and field testing.

Results: In the exploratory factor analysis, 48 items were excluded on the grounds of insufficient common variance (>0.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), such as pembrolizumab, have revolutionized cancer treatment by enhancing the immune system's response to malignancies. However, these therapies are associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including neuromuscular complications such as myasthenia gravis, myositis, and myocarditis. We describe two male patients, aged 67 and 68, with small cell and non-small cell lung cancers, who developed progressive neuromuscular symptoms, including ptosis, diplopia, and generalized weakness, after receiving pembrolizumab.

This study was aimed to identify the most frequently observed pathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infections from outpatient urinary isolates obtained across seven different geographical regions in Türkiye and to determine whether the antibiotic resistance rates of these pathogens differ significantly between these regions. The study included patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with uncomplicated urinary tract infections and had positive urine cultures from March 2021 to August 2022, across 37 different centers in Türkiye. The participating centers were selected based on their use of the disk diffusion method, in line with the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines, to ensure standardization of urine culture data.

Cerebral cortex development in humans is a highly complex and orchestrated process that is under tight genetic regulation. Rare mutations that alter gene expression or function can disrupt the structure of the cerebral cortex, resulting in a range of neurological conditions. Lissencephaly ('smooth brain') spectrum disorders comprise a group of rare, genetically heterogeneous congenital brain malformations commonly associated with epilepsy and intellectual disability.
