Schizophrenia is a chronic mental health condition treated with antipsychotics. A significant number of patients fail to respond to standard treatment and develop treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). The only current treatment for TRS is clozapine, which has significant side effects and may only be effective in 40% of cases.

Introduction: We investigated the effect of social media-based interventions on COVID-19 vaccine intention (VI) and confidence in Japan.

Methods: We conducted a three-arm randomised controlled trial between 5 November 2021 and 9 January 2022 during a low incidence (<1000/day) of COVID-19 in Japan in the midst of the second and the third waves. Japanese citizens aged ≥20 who had not received any COVID-19 vaccine and did not intend to be vaccinated were randomly assigned to one of the following three groups: (1) a control group, (2) a group using a mobile app chatbot providing information on COVID-19 vaccines and (3) a group using interactive webinars with health professionals.

Critical care practice has been embodied in the healthcare system since the institutionalization of intensive care units (ICUs) in the late '50s. Over time, this sector has experienced many changes and improvements in providing immediate and dedicated healthcare as patients requiring intensive care are often frail and critically ill with high mortality and morbidity rates. These changes were aided by innovations in diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring technologies, as well as the implementation of evidence-based guidelines and organizational structures within the ICU.

Can self-assessment ability predict student performance in a dental anatomy course?

Eur J Dent Educ

February 2024

Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Introduction: The development of early self-assessment skills and determining its correlation with academic performance could provide evidence to alter dental curricula. The aim of this retrospective study was to examine the relationships between students' early self-assessment ability in waxing and three different evaluation methods (waxing assessment, written examinations, and tooth identification examination) in a dental anatomy course.

Materials And Methods: The dental anatomy scores during the academic years of 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 from two cohorts of second-year pre-doctoral dental students at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine were analyzed.

Division of Respiratory Diseases, Children's Hospital, Boston, Harvard Medical School, Mailstop 208, 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA 02115, USA. Electronic address:

This article describes the changes in normal sleep regulation, structure, and organization and sleep-related changes in respiration from infancy to adolescence. The first 2 years of age are striking, with more time asleep than awake. With development, the electroencephalogram architecture has a marked reduction in rapid eye movement sleep and the acquisition of K-complexes, sleep spindles, and slow-wave sleep.

Background & Aims: Despite therapeutic advances, effective treatments for chronic constipation remain an unmet need. The vibrating capsule is a nonpharmacologic, orally ingested, programmable capsule that vibrates intraluminally to induce bowel movements. We aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of the vibrating capsule in patients with chronic constipation.

Purpose: Insufficient data exist regarding the benefit of long-term antiplatelet vs. anticoagulant therapy in the prevention of recurrent ischemic stroke in patients with ischemic stroke and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Therefore, this study aimed to compare longitudinal outcomes associated with antiplatelet vs.

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is highly prevalent in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). AASLD guidelines recommend a risk-based screening approach. Our aim was to ascertain if the risk-based approach leads to appropriate HDV screening, identify targets to improve screening rates, and study HDV clinical burden.

Cerebral collateral circulation refers to the anastomoses that reroute the blood flow to the ischemic penumbra in the event of a large vessel occlusion (LVO). We aim to determine the utility of pre-mechanical-thrombectomy (MT) collateral scores in the early (<6 h from onset) versus extended (6-24 h from onset) window for MT with respect to a 3-month functional outcome, 3-month mortality, and early neurological improvement. We performed a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent MT for an anterior circulation LVO at a comprehensive stroke center from 7/2014 to 12/2020.

A growing body of evidence suggests that sleep is critical for the adaptive processing and consolidation of emotional information into long-term memory. Previous research has indicated that emotional components of scenes particularly benefit from sleep in healthy groups, yet sleep-dependent emotional memory processes remain unexplored in clinical cohorts, including those with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This line of research is important as it will add to the understanding of how disrupted sleep in OSA contributes to both impaired cognition and emotion dysregulation.

Treatment for Minor Attracted Persons is inadequate and difficult to access. This qualitative study examined community-based MAPs' responses to narrative questions about their experiences and what they want society to understand, using an iterative thematic analysis. Notable responses from the participants included: 1) sexual attraction does not equal action; 2) minor attraction is immutable; 3) stigma leads to psychological burden; 4) therapy should aim to reduce distress, not change sexual feelings; and 5) sexual behavior can be controlled and remain within legal parameters.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) are common mental health conditions in adults that are often seen in primary care. Although there is insufficient evidence to support universal screening for PD and GAD, evaluation should be considered in patients who express recurrent, pervasive worry or present with somatic symptoms not attributed to underlying medical conditions. The GAD-7 and Patient Health Questionnaire for PD are validated screening tools that can aid in diagnosis and assessment.

Introduction: Elevation of blood pressure (BP) after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) can theoretically restore perfusion to the ischemic brain tissue, but it comes at a risk of causing reperfusion injury. We aim to determine the association of 24-h post-MT BP parameters with clinical outcomes depending on the pre-MT collateral status.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent MT at a comprehensive stroke center from 7/2014 to 12/2020.

Introduction: Anemia is associated with higher morbidity and mortality, but its association with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is not well established. We aim to determine the association of five-day anemia parameters with clinical outcomes in patients with an AIS, depending on their pre-mechanical thrombectomy (MT) collateral status.

Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent MT at a comprehensive stroke center from 7/2014 to 12/2020.

Although buprenorphine is widely accepted as a treatment option for opioid use disorder (OUD), it is underutilized as a treatment for cancer-related pain. Owing to its decreased side effect profile, various formulations (depending on FDA indication of pain versus OUD), and ability to simultaneously address OUD and pain, buprenorphine is gaining popularity in the outpatient palliative medicine setting. Despite these compelling benefits, there are significant barriers to initiating therapy.

Background: Although hand surgeons usually concur that arthroplasty is indicated for disabling basal joint arthritis, controversy persists regarding the preferred surgical methods. This article describes a novel technique of trapezial excisional arthroplasty with partial trapezoidectomy and abductor pollicis longus (APL) dual ligament reconstruction, and reports the long-term results of 150 cases. Based on this experience, we hypothesize that this technique is a reliably effective and durable surgical option for basal joint arthritis.

Purpose: Traditional paper documentation of cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) events is often inaccurate and incomplete. Electronic documentation supports appropriate process improvements and optimal patient care and contributes to greater accuracy in national databases from which national benchmarks are derived. The aim of this quality improvement initiative was to compare the timeliness and accuracy of paper-based versus electronic documentation of live CPA events.
