Article Synopsis
  • Recent guidelines advocate for quick initiation of lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) to achieve significant reductions in LDL cholesterol levels.
  • A European study involving 286 ACS patients evaluated the effectiveness of two LLT strategies: high-intensity statin monotherapy (mono-HIS) and a combination of high-intensity statins with ezetimibe (combo-HIS).
  • Findings showed that while LDL-c targets were met in under half of the patients, combo-HIS was linked to a significantly greater reduction in LDL-c levels compared to mono-HIS, suggesting its potential for more effective management in post-ACS care.*

Duration of anticoagulation of venous thromboembolism.

Presse Med

September 2024

Respiratory Department, Ramón y Cajal Hospital (IRICYS), Madrid, Spain; Medicine Department, Universidad de Alcalá (IRICYS), Madrid, Spain; CIBER de Enfermedades Respiratorias (CIBERES), Madrid, Spain.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common, serious condition that requires anticoagulation for at least three months to prevent recurrence and long-term complications. After this initial period, the decision to continue or stop anticoagulation depends on the balance between the risk of recurrent VTE and the risk of bleeding. Established guidelines suggest short-term anticoagulation for VTE caused by transient factors and indefinite anticoagulation for recurrent or cancer-associated VTE.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers started looking into using a special medicine called thrombolytic therapy to treat a serious condition called pulmonary embolism (PE) a few years after doctors first used a specific imaging test to diagnose it.
  • In 1992, a doctor named Guy Meyer showed that using a medicine called alteplase helped patients with PE quickly feel better, but it also came with risks like serious bleeding.
  • Now, ongoing studies like the PEITHO-3 trial are testing safer ways to use thrombolytics and other treatments for PE, focusing not just on saving lives, but also on how patients feel after recovery.

Background: The impact of geographical accessibility on cancer survival has been investigated in few studies, with most research focusing on access to reference care centers, using overall mortality and limited to specific cancer sites. This study aims to examine the association of access to primary care with mortality in excess of patients with the 10 most frequent cancers in France, while controlling for socioeconomic deprivation.

Methods: This study included a total of 151,984 cases diagnosed with the 10 most common cancer sites in 21 French cancer registries between 2013 and 2015.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 2,515 patients were examined, primarily with lung and renal cancer, revealing a one-year survival rate of 84.3% and low mortality and morbidity rates post-surgery.
  • * Findings indicate that while adrenalectomy is increasingly performed minimally invasively, factors like extra-adrenal metastases and incomplete surgery are linked to poorer survival outcomes, highlighting a need for future research on patient selection for this procedure.

The impact of the Mediterranean diet on immune function in older adults.

Aging Clin Exp Res

May 2024

National Research Council, Neuroscience Institute, Aging Branch, Padova, Italy.

Diet is one of the lifestyle factors that is most amenable to intervention, and has a substantial effect on the potential for successful aging and mitigation of the risk of disease. Good nutrition is a pillar of healthy aging, and a large body of evidence attests to the benefits of the Mediterranean diet on the quality of the aging process. The Mediterranean diet comprises a wide range of nutrients which, both individually and collectively, exert positive effects on immunity, in large part mediated by the gut microbiota.

Cardiac emergencies in women, such as acute coronary syndromes, acute heart failure, and cardiac arrest, are associated with a high risk of adverse outcomes and mortality. Although women historically have been significantly underrepresented in clinical studies of these diseases, the guideline-recommended treatment for these emergencies is generally the same for both sexes. Still, women are less likely to receive evidence-based treatment compared to men.

High-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) refers to a large embolic burden causing right ventricular failure and hemodynamic instability. It accounts for approximately 5% of all cases of PE but contributes significantly to overall PE mortality. Systemic thrombolysis is the first-line revascularization therapy in high-risk PE.
