Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for more effective immunization programs, including in limited resource settings. This paper presents outcomes and lessons learnt from a COVID-19 vaccination campaign (VC), which used a tailored adaptive strategy to optimise vaccine uptake in the Boeny region of Madagascar.

The limited effects of health communication interventions have often been attributed to psychological reactance, and previous research has tended to focus on how to design health messages that mitigate this phenomenon. Moreover, in various human cell lines, the compound shows no cytotoxicity and excellent parasite selectivity.

Transmission of the malaria parasite Plasmodium to mosquitoes necessitates gamete egress from red blood cells to allow zygote formation and ookinete motility to enable penetration of the midgut epithelium. Both processes are dependent on the secretion of proteins from distinct sets of specialized vesicles. Arbovirus surveillance of wild-caught mosquitoes is an affordable and sensitive means of monitoring virus transmission dynamics at various spatial-temporal scales, and emergence and re-emergence during epidemic and interepidemic periods. A variety of molecular diagnostics for arbovirus screening of mosquitoes (known as xeno-monitoring) are available, but most provide limited information about virus diversity. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based screening coupled with RNA sequencing is an increasingly affordable and sensitive pipeline for integrating complete viral genome sequencing into surveillance programs.

A key lesson from the west Africa (2014-16) Ebola disease epidemic was that outbreak responses fail when they respond to patients through a narrow clinical lens without considering the broader community and social context of care. Here, in the second of two Series papers on the modern landscape of Ebola disease, we review progress made in the last decade to improve patient-centred care. Although the biosafety imperatives of treating Ebola disease remain, recent advances show how to mitigate these so that patients are cared for in a safe and dignified manner that encourages early treatment-seeking behaviour and provides support after the return of patients to their communities.
