Background: Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) improve survival among patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF); however, studies have identified low utilization rates. No study has evaluated the prevalence and predictors of MRA prescribing in a nationally representative outpatient cohort.
Study Question: What is the prevalence and predictors of MRA prescribing among outpatients with HFrEF in the United States?
Study Design: A national cross-sectional secondary analysis of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2007 to 2014 including all office visits for HFrEF in patients aged >55 years.

Teaching the clinical implementation of pharmacogenomics to students in clinical programs first requires careful consideration of their aptitude in basic clinical pharmacologic concepts. Prior to developing training exercises on drug-gene interactions, educators must first assess student competency in identifying and managing drug-drug interactions given the similarities in identifying and managing these sources of medication error.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of vitamin K1 oral liquids in Sterile Water for Injection when stored in amber glass bottles and amber plastic syringes under refrigerated conditions. Four 100-mL batches of vitamin K1 in Sterile Water for Injection were prepared in amber glass bottles to protect from light. One of the batches was divided into 1-mL aliquots, using amber plastic oral syringes, and capped.

The physicochemical and biological properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are greatly affected by their salt forms. The choice of a particular salt formulation is based on numerous factors such as API chemistry, intended dosage form, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. The appropriate salt can improve the overall therapeutic and pharmaceutical effects of an API.

Background And Purpose: Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a severe, often fatal illness. Studies have shown that healthcare professionals lack an in-depth knowledge of EVD. Countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa are beginning to emphasize the need to train healthcare professionals about EVD, but the United States still lacks formal training for healthcare students.

Advances in polymer synthetic approaches have significantly enhanced the ability to rationally design the block copolymers with tailor-made functionality and variable molecular weight. Hence, block copolymers have been extensively applied in the formulation of nanostructure materials. Owing to their amphiphilic characteristics, block copolymers can generate different nanostructures, providing easy adjustability of their size, stability and surface chemistry.

There are numerous hurdles hindering the clinical translation of nanomedicines. The major challenges are: reproducible manufacturing and scale-up, availability of appropriate characterization methods, instability under in vivo environments, safety issues, poor understanding of the disease heterogeneity and patient preselection strategies, regulatory barriers and inadequate understanding of the biophysical and chemical interactions of nanoformulations. Thus, a better understanding of key physicochemical attributes and their characterization methods, in vivo behavior and the in-vitro-in-vivo characterization cascade of stability, safety and efficacy testing is needed to accelerate nanomedicine translation.

The pentablock (PB) copolymers based composite nanosystems were designed to provide a long-term delivery of macromolecules to the back of the eye. A unique arrangement of each block (polyethylene glycol, polylactic acid, and polycaprolactone) with various molecular weights (PB-A and PB-B) was selected for the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) and thermosensitive gel (PB-C) by sequential ring-opening bulk copolymerization reaction. PB copolymers were characterized for their molecular weight and purity by H-NMR spectroscopy and crystallinity by PXRD.

Objective: To describe pharmacy students' use of mobile devices in a basic health science laboratory and to report the students' perceptions on how solving cases with their mobile devices influenced their attitudes, abilities, and view on the use of mobile devices as tools for pharmacists.
Methods: First-year pharmacy students utilized mobile devices to solve clinical case studies in a basic health sciences laboratory. A pre-survey and two post-surveys were administered to assess the students' comfort, awareness, use, and perceptions on the use of their mobile devices and apps.

Survival rate for pancreatic cancer (pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, PDAC) is poor, with about 80% of patients presenting with the metastatic disease. Gemcitabine, the standard chemotherapeutic agent for locally advanced and metastatic PDAC has limited efficacy, attributed to innate/acquired resistance and activation of pro-survival pathways. The Mnk1/2-eIF4E and NF-κB signaling pathways are implicated in PDAC disease progression/metastasis and also associated with gemcitabine-induced resistance in PDAC.

Background And Objectives: Despite the introduction of Medicare Part D (MPD) and 2012 Affordable Care Act (ACA), patients have a cost burden due to increases in drug prices. To overcome cost barriers, some patients purchase their medications from Canadian online pharmacies as Canadian prescription drug prices are believed to be lower than US prescription drug prices. The objective of this study was to determine which top 100 Medicare drugs can be imported to the USA legally, and to determine which type of prescription drug would be more beneficial to be purchased from Canadian online pharmacies.

Objectives: Pharmacist-led diabetes collaborative drug therapy management (CDTM) has been shown to improve outcomes. Whether such programs are effective specifically in Medicaid patients, who face barriers to access and self-management, has not been well characterized. This pilot study explores glycemic control, utilization and costs associated with pharmacist-led CDTM in a small population of Medicaid patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

The question of whether outstanding leaders are born or made has been debated for years. There are numerous examples of historical figures that came naturally to leadership, while others developed their leadership skills through tenacity and experience. To understand leadership, both nature (the genetic component) and nurture (the environmental influences) must be considered.

Clozapine is the sole antipsychotic agent effective for the treatment of refractory schizophrenia. Sixty percent of clozapine-treated patients, however, fail to adequately respond. Minocycline, a tetracycline antibiotic, possesses antiinflammatory and neuroprotective properties that may play a role in schizophrenia.

Pomegranate ( L.), a nutrient-rich unique fruit, has been used for centuries for the prevention and treatment of various inflammation-driven diseases. Based on our previous study, a characterized pomegranate emulsion (PE) exhibited a striking inhibition of dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-initiated rat mammary tumorigenesis via antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing mechanisms.

Identifying noninvasive biomarkers of kidney disease is valuable for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) expression is known to be elevated in the kidneys in several renal disease pathologies. We hypothesized that the urinary HIF-1a mRNA level may be a suitable biomarker for expression of this protein in chronic kidney disease (CKD).

As the role of the pharmacist becomes more patient and counseling-centered, the healthcare market is changing to keep pace with more modern needs, such as self-treatment. Self-treatment provides patients the ability to diagnose their own condition and pick an appropriate medication from the pharmacy to treat their symptoms. This process allows a certain freedom for consumers to actively engage in their own health.

Although the use of a professional dress code is standard practice across colleges and schools of pharmacy during introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences, requiring professional attire is not applied consistently during the didactic portion of students' education. There are arguments for and against the adoption of a professional dress code throughout the entire doctor of pharmacy program, including the classroom setting. Given uncertainty regarding the potential benefits and challenges that may arise from adopting a professional dress code in the didactic portion of a student pharmacist's education, it is perhaps not surprising that programs adopt disparate policies regarding its use.
