Management of T cell responses by anesthetic drugs-propofol & isoflurane in perioperative breast cancer patients: A prospective hospital-based study.

Background & objectives The choice of anesthetic for better perioperative conservation of immune responses has always been contentious. This study investigated the differential impact of the intravenous anesthetic, propofol, and the volatile anesthetic, isoflurane on the T cell immune responses, if any, among individuals going through perioperative breast cancer. Methods Perioperative blood samples (preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative) collected from participants with breast cancer in two arms namely isoflurane arm (n=50) and the propofol arm (n=50) were analyzed for T cell immune response using flow cytometry and ELISA.

Research Priorities for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response: An Interdisciplinary Delphi Study.

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a multisensory experience most often associated with feelings of relaxation and altered consciousness, elicited by stimuli which include whispering, repetitive movements, and close personal attention. Since 2015, ASMR research has grown rapidly, spanning disciplines from neuroscience to media studies but lacking a collaborative or interdisciplinary approach. To build a cohesive and connected structure for ASMR research moving forwards, a modified Delphi study was conducted with ASMR experts, practitioners, community members, and researchers from various disciplines.

CYP3A5 pharmacogenetic testing for tacrolimus in pediatric heart transplant patients: a budget impact analysis.

Background: Pharmacogenomic testing can optimize drug efficacy and minimize adverse effects. CYP3A5 polymorphisms affect the metabolism of tacrolimus. We sought to estimate the budget impact of preemptive pharmacogenomic testing for CYP3A5 in pediatric heart transplantation patients from an institutional perspective.

Budget impact analysis of TPMT and NUDT15 pharmacogenomic testing for 6-mercaptopurine in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients.

Background: Pharmacogenomic testing identifies gene polymorphisms impacting drug metabolism, aiding in optimizing treatment efficacy and minimizing toxicity, thus potentially reducing healthcare utilization. 6-Mercaptopurine metabolism is affected by thiopurine methyltransferase ( TPMT ) and nudix hydrolase 15 ( NUDT15 ) polymorphisms. We sought to estimate the budget impact of preemptive pharmacogenomic testing for these genes in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients from an institutional perspective.

The Role of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Pharmacy Education and Practice.

A current major topic of conversation in academic pharmacy is "curricular hoarding," the overloading of the curriculum due to the steady addition of required knowledge and skills without a concomitant subtraction of existing content. It can be tempting to consider addressing hoarding by just reducing content in the foundational biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences or by shifting some foundational content into prerequisites for admission into the Doctor of Pharmacy program. The health care education literature suggests that this approach would negatively impact the development of the critical and clinical thinking skills needed by a modern pharmacist.

Incidence of Middle Mesial Canals in Mandibular Molars during Root Canal Treatment and Nonsurgical Retreatment.

Introduction: Large-scale clinical studies on the incidence of middle mesial canals (MMCs) in nonsurgical root canal treatment (RCT) and retreatment of mandibular molars are lacking. The primary aim of this observational study was to determine the incidence of MMCs in mandibular first and second molars that received RCT or nonsurgical retreatment (NSRetx). The secondary aim was to determine factors associated with incidence of MMCs.

One School of Pharmacy's Experience of Talking With Student Pharmacists About Coping With Patient Death.

Objective: End-of-life care is an important aspect of health care profession education; however, little has been published about preparing student pharmacists for the emotional impact of their patient dying. This manuscript describes using a question-and-answer seminar with a mixed faculty and student panel, members of which had been impacted by a patient's death, as a stimulus for student reflection on how they might cope in similar circumstances.

Methods: Students attending the seminar were provided a guiding prompt for reflecting on what would help them respond to a patient's death.

Potential Impact of Race and Ethnicity on Pharmacy Residency Match Rate and Match Participation.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate if a correlation exists between a student's self-identified race or ethnicity and their rates of participating in the match or matching with a pharmacy residency.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included pharmacy graduates from 2016 through 2021 at two schools/colleges of pharmacy, a Historically Black College or University and a non-Historically Black College or University. The primary outcome was to compare the percentage of underrepresented minority (URM) students and non-URM students who successfully matched with a postgraduate year 1 pharmacy residency.

Describing the evidence linking interprofessional education interventions to improving the delivery of safe and effective patient care: a scoping review.

Empirical evidence indicates that collaborative interprofessional practice leads to positive health outcomes. Further, there is an abundance of evidence examining student and/or faculty perceptions of learning or satisfaction about the interprofessional education (IPE) learning experience. However, there is a dearth of research linking IPE interventions to patient outcomes.

Impact of COVID-19 on Pharmacy Education and Practice: Strategies to Boost Advocacy and Unity among Health Care Organizations.

The global COVID-19 pandemic impacted pharmacy education and changed the pharmacists' scope of practice at the federal and state levels. Based on the Amended Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act, pharmacists were authorized to provide essential services, including testing, treatments, and immunizations at various practice settings. Specifically, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued emergency use authorization for several medications, vaccines, and medical devices.

Envisioning the Future of Student Success: Report of the 2022-2023 AACP Student Affairs Standing Committee.

Over the past several years, traditional metrics have indicated declining student success within colleges and schools of pharmacy. Though students may be less well-prepared for professional school than in years past, once candidates are admitted to our institutions, we have a responsibility to effectively support their progression through the program. The 2022-2023 Student Affairs Committee was convened to evaluate and advance the construct of student success within Doctor of Pharmacy programs.

Introduction: The aims of this study were to determine the incidence, associated factors, and predictability of flare-ups after nonsurgical retreatments (NSRetx).

Methods: All patients (n = 3,666) who received NSRetx by 3 endodontists in 2 endodontic offices during a period of 6 years (2016-2022) were included. Demographic, diagnostic, and procedural data were collected.

Musings of Two Administrators for Those Considering a Career Change.

There is a learning curve when stepping into an administrative position, whether you have been planning the change for years or find yourself asked to replace someone who has left unexpectedly. Two associate deans offer perspectives on things we wish we had known prior to taking on our current position. Some are practical skills that can also be helpful in any faculty position, while others relate to the different perspectives an administrator needs.

Social Determinants of Health in People Living with Psychiatric Disorders: The Role of Pharmacists.

Introduction: Social determinants of health (SDOH) affect outcomes of people living with psychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. As experts in medication optimization, pharmacists play a vital role in identifying and addressing medication-related problems associated with SDOH. However, there is a paucity of literature on how pharmacists can be part of the solution.

Substance misuse training in pharmacy education: Results from a pilot study on the integration of an interprofessional experience.

Background: Studies show that pharmacists are unsure in their ability to screen patients for substance abuse. This study evaluates the efficacy of incorporating interprofessional education (IPE) into a substance misuse training program on pharmacy students' learning outcomes in providing screening and counseling for substance misuse.

Methods: Pharmacy students from 2019 to 2020 completed 3 substance misuse training modules.

Public Perceptions of Community Pharmacy-Based Naloxone Services: A National Cross-Sectional Survey.

Little is known about the general public's perceptions regarding community pharmacist-delivered naloxone services at the national level. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to describe the US general public's awareness, knowledge, beliefs, comfort, perceived barriers, abilities, and communication preferences related to community pharmacy-based naloxone services. A national, online cross-sectional survey was conducted in September 2021 among US adults ≥18 years recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk).

To review the efficacy, safety, and role of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist semaglutide for chronic weight management. A literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar was performed using the search terms: semaglutide 2.4, weight, and obesity.

A pilot psychedelic psychopharmacology elective.

Background And Purpose: There is renewed research attention on the use of psychedelic drugs to treat psychiatric illnesses. If psychedelic drugs are approved for medical use in the United States, patients, professionals, and policy makers will look to pharmacists as medication experts for advice on the safe, effective, and ethical use of these substances. To help prepare a future generation of pharmacists in this therapeutic area, a psychedelic psychopharmacology elective was developed and piloted.

Endodontic Specialists' Practice During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic: 1 Year after the Initial Outbreak.

Introduction: The aims of this observational study were to determine if endodontists' practices in early 2021 experienced changes in patient characteristics compared with a comparable prepandemic period and to determine whether the changes reported during the initial outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in 2020 were reversed 1 year later.

Methods: Demographic, diagnostic, and procedural data of 2657 patient visits from 2 endodontist private offices from March 16 to May 31 in 2019, 2020, and 2021 were included. Bivariate analyses and multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the impact of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on patient data.

A systematic review of the drug-drug interaction between statins and colchicine: Patient characteristics, etiologies, and clinical management strategies.

Colchicine and statins are frequently co-prescribed for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, auto-inflammatory diseases, and gout. Both are substrates and inhibitors of the cytochrome P-450 (CYP) 3A4 isozyme and P-glycoprotein so that taken together, they represent a clinically significant interaction. Data suggest the interaction may be associated with potentially life-threatening myopathies and rhabdomyolysis.
