Study Question: Does endometriosis affect the mental health of women using oral contraceptives?

Summary Answer: Among oral contraceptive users, women with endometriosis have a higher risk of depression compared to those without endometriosis, although the absolute risk increase is small.

What Is Known Already: Previous studies have suggested a potential link between endometriosis and mental health issues, but the impact of endometriosis on depression among oral contraceptive users remains unclear.

Study Design, Size, Duration: A secondary pooled cohort study utilizing data from two longitudinal patient-centric studies (INAS-VIPOS and PRO-E2) was conducted across 11 European countries, Colombia and Australia.

Objectives: To assess the risk of contraceptive failure and adverse events (AEs) associated with the type of progestin when coadministered with psychotropic drugs within a routine clinical practice setting.

Study Design: A pooled analysis of four large, prospective, multinational cohort studies including women with a new prescription of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and concomitant psychotropic drug use from 13 European countries and the United States. We determined the frequency of contraceptive failures and AEs within 6 months after COC initiation by progestin type.

Background: Wilson disease (WD) is a rare disorder of copper metabolism, causing copper accumulation mainly in the liver and the brain. The prevalence of WD was previously estimated around 20 to 33.3 patients per million for the United States, Europe, and Asia, but data on the prevalence of WD in Germany are limited.

Purpose: Triple therapy (long-acting muscarinic antagonist/long-acting β-agonist/inhaled corticosteroid) is recommended for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who experience recurrent exacerbations. Multiple-inhaler triple therapy (MITT) is associated with poor adherence and persistence. This study assessed comparative adherence and persistence to single-inhaler triple therapy (SITT) versus MITT among patients with COPD in a real-world setting in Germany.

Background: Fabry disease (FD), an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder, is caused by mutations in the gene encoding α-galactosidase A, resulting in lysosomal accumulation of globotriaosylceramide and other glycosphingolipids. Early detection of FD is challenging, accounting for delayed diagnosis and treatment initiation. This study aimed to develop an algorithm using a logistic regression model to facilitate early identification of patients based on ICD-10-GM coding using a German Sickness Fund Database.

Introduction: Understanding antibiotic prescribing for uncomplicated urinary tract infection (uUTI) could help to optimize management. However, data on uUTI treatment patterns in the European Union are scarce. We used real-world data to evaluate adherence to antibiotic prescribing guidelines for femalepatients with uUTI in Germany.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic multisystem autoimmune disease, carries high risk of organ damage and burden to healthcare systems. SLE disease modification aims to reduce disease activity with minimal treatment toxicity and preventing or minimizing organ damage development. This real-world study utilizing healthcare administrative claims data assessed organ damage development, associated costs and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) in patients with SLE in Germany.

Division of Family Planning, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, United States.

Objective: To compare the incidence of expulsion for different copper intrauterine device (IUD) shapes.

Study Design: We conducted a secondary analysis of the ongoing, prospective, non-interventional European Active Surveillance Study on LCS12 (EURAS-LCS12). Users of newly inserted IUDs were recruited in 10 European countries via a network of approximately 1200 clinicians.

Systematic analysis of combined oral contraceptive prescription patterns in psychotropic drug users across twelve European countries.

Contraception

April 2024

LVR-University Hospital Essen, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany; Center for Translational Neuro, and Behavioral Sciences, University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare how combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are prescribed to women using psychotropic drugs versus those who are not in Europe.
  • The analysis included data from over 143,000 women, revealing no significant differences in COC prescriptions between the two groups, with certain progestins being more or less frequently prescribed based on psychotropic drug use.
  • The findings suggest that while overall prescribing patterns are similar, there may be specific considerations for certain psychotropic drug users, like those taking St. John's wort, indicating a need for better guidelines for healthcare professionals in these cases.

This pooled analysis compared the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) associated with combined oral contraceptives (COCs) containing estradiol (E2) valerate-dienogest with those containing ethinyl E2-levonorgestrel. Data were retrieved from two large, prospective, observational cohort studies. Propensity score subclassification was applied to balance baseline parameters between the COC user cohorts.

Background: Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a rare chronic inflammatory skin disease with a high disease burden, but data on clinical and economic burden are still scarce.

Objective: To describe the real-world epidemiologic, clinical and therapeutic characteristics and related economic burden of patients with PN compared to a benchmark population in Germany.

Methods: This retrospective study was based on an excerpt of German Statutory Health Insurance data of patients with an initial PN diagnosis between 2012 and 2016.

Introduction: This retrospective cohort study (GSK213737) aimed to characterize treatment patterns, healthcare resource utilization (HCRU), and costs in patients with lupus nephritis (LN) initiating immunosuppressant therapy in clinical practice in Germany, to better understand the full picture of the real-world burden of LN.

Methods: Adult patients with LN who initiated mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), intravenous cyclophosphamide (CYC), azathioprine (AZA), tacrolimus, cyclosporin A, or rituximab therapy in 2011-2017 (index therapy) were identified from the Betriebskrankenkassen German Sickness Fund database. Treatment patterns, including immunosuppressant discontinuations, and therapy switches, were assessed (maximum follow-up 4 years).
