Mucosal Spread of Sinonasal Adenocarcinoma into the Nasolacrimal Duct Without Bony Erosion of the Nasolacrimal Canal: A Case Report.

Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg

November 2024

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woodville South, South Australia, Australia.

Sinonasal malignancy is a rare but recognized cause for nasolacrimal obstruction leading to epiphora. While direct mucosal spread through the nasolacrimal duct can occur in benign sinonasal tumors such as inverting papilloma, the same phenomenon has not been described in malignant lesions. The authors present a case of a low-grade nonintestinal type sinonasal adenocarcinoma centered on the inferior meatus of the sinonasal cavity, showing mucosal invasion into the nasolacrimal duct with bony expansion but no erosion of the nasolacrimal canal.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of F-fluorocholine PET/CT imaging in locating hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) when other imaging methods were inconclusive.
  • Out of 167 patients, F-fluorocholine PET/CT identified 92.81% of lesions, showing high sensitivity and accuracy, leading to successful surgical interventions.
  • Post-surgery, patients experienced a significant reduction in parathyroid hormone levels, confirming the imaging's reliability for preoperative planning in pHPT cases.

Seromucinous hamartoma with unique clinical and histopathological features: a case report and review of the literature.

J Med Case Rep

November 2024

Department of anatomical Pathology, Hotel Dieu de France Hospital, Saint Joseph University, Alfred Naccache Boulevard, PO Box: 166830, Ashrafieh, Beirut, Lebanon.

Background: We present this case to highlight the importance of considering seromucinous hamartoma in the differential diagnosis of nasal cavity lesions, particularly due to its rarity and potential for being mistaken for more aggressive pathologies. Seromucinous hamartoma, although benign, can exhibit clinical and histological features that overlap with those of malignant tumors, posing a diagnostic challenge. This case is especially noteworthy due to the unusual presentation of sebaceous differentiation within seromucinous hamartoma, a feature not previously documented in the literature.

Central pancreatectomy: An uncommon but potentially optimal choice of pancreatic resection.

Hepatobiliary Pancreat Dis Int

November 2024

Department of Academic Surgery, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, Fulham Road, Chelsea, London SW3 6JJ, UK; Department of HPB Surgery, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, Bristol Royal Infirmary, Upper Maudlin St, Bristol BS2 8HW, UK. Electronic address:

Benign, premalignant or low-grade malignant pancreatic tumors are increasingly diagnosed owing to the widespread uptake of cross-sectional imaging. Surgical excision is a potential treatment option for these tumors. Pancreatoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy are the standard resections for tumors located in the pancreatic head-neck or body-tail, respectively, and not uncommonly sacrifice a significant amount of healthy pancreatic parenchyma.

Cervical polyps are typically benign exophytic lesions that are often asymptomatic and small during pregnancy. However, they can occasionally cause significant symptoms, leading to gestational complications. A lack of awareness of this condition, combined with inadequate diagnosis and treatment, can pose risks to maternal and fetal health, potentially resulting in complications or pregnancy loss.

Introduction And Importance: Chondroid syringoma also referred to as a mixed tumor, is a benign and rare tumor originating from apocrine or eccrine sweat glands; it predominantly affects middle-aged men. While fine-needle aspiration cytology can aid in diagnosis, histological confirmation remains essential due to the potential for misdiagnosis.

Case Presentation: A-22-year-old male who presented with a solitary, slow-growing, painless, erythematous nodule on the right nasal wing that had been present for 1 year, which was misdiagnosed as an epidermal cyst.

Surgical Management of Epidermoid Cysts of Scalp: A Case Report.

Cureus

October 2024

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Private Practice, New Delhi, IND.

Epidermoid cysts represent a common benign cutaneous neoplasm resulting from the invagination and subsequent proliferation of epidermal cells within the dermal layer. They exhibit a predilection for the face, cervical region, upper torso, and scalp, manifesting as firm, mobile nodules with a characteristic central punctum. Surgical excision is the recommended therapeutic approach for sizeable or recurrent cysts, particularly when they elicit discomfort or aesthetic concerns.

Article Synopsis
  • Thoracic tracheal tumors are uncommon and can present challenges for surgery and anesthesia, making their management complex.
  • This study focuses on the percutaneous trans-tracheal endoscopic approach (PTTEA) as a minimally invasive alternative for patients with tracheal tumors when traditional methods fail.
  • Out of 16 patients treated from 2015 to 2022, most had successful outcomes with benign tumors, while malignant tumors required further treatment after initial procedures; PTTEA proved to offer advantages like better access and fewer complications.

Introduction: Sarcomas of the head and neck region account for less than 10% of soft tissue sarcomas, and comprise less than 1% of head and neck malignancies. Approximately 80% of sarcomas arise from soft tissue, with the remaining originating from bone or cartilage. Head and neck sarcomas typically occur more frequently in men.

The Importance of Elastography in the Early Diagnosis of Highly Differentiated Parotid Tumors: a Case-Report.

Maedica (Bucur)

September 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece.

It is indisputable that high-resolution ultrasound (US) is the diagnostic gold standard for the evaluation of superficial parotid gland diseases. It is a dynamic, quick, simple, easily available, cost-effective, noninvasive procedure, with absence of ionizing radiation examination that can be performed safely and in special categories of patients such as pregnant women and children. It is widely accepted that on US, benign tumors have clear, smooth and well-defined borders, homogeneous hypoechoic parenchyma and a defined distribution of vessels.

Among all benign and reactive mesenchymal lesions, nodular fasciitis is most frequently misdiagnosed as a sarcoma due to its concerning clinical and histopathological features: it arises on fascial surfaces, grows rapidly, and may infiltrate into adjacent tissues and blood vessels. The most commonly involved sites include upper extremities, trunk, head, and neck, with rare occurrences in the oral cavity. Recurrences following both incomplete and complete excision are rare, and its natural history progresses through self-limited growth followed by spontaneous regression.

Significance: Diagnosis of cancerous and pre-cancerous oral lesions at early stages is critical for the improvement of patient care, to increase survival rates and minimize the invasiveness of tumor resection surgery. Unfortunately, oral precancerous and early-stage cancerous lesions are often difficult to distinguish from oral benign lesions with the existing diagnostic tools used during standard clinical oral examination. In consequence, early diagnosis of oral cancer can be achieved in only about 30% of patients.
